5 Best Looks from the 2015 Teen Choice Awards

Let's face it: usually, teenagers and high-end fashion don't mix. But Sunday's Teen Choice Awards undermined that generalization. While the show itself was as awkward as a frizzy-haired high schooler, the fashion surprisingly did not disappoint. Tucked in a sea of up-to-there minidresses and neon hues were a selection of sophisticated, fashion-forward looks. Missed the award show? Not to worry, ladies and gent: check out the five best looks from this year's Teen Choice Awards.

Emma Roberts in Peter Pilotto: Only 24 years-old,  and this actress is already a red carpet veteran. Wearing a tailored midi-dress that's adorned with clashing pastel prints, this look perfectly mixes youthful prints with a ladylike silhouette. Adorned with minimal hardware, this outfit is surprisingly sophisticated for the Teen Choice Awards and proves to onlookers that youth and taste are not mutually exclusive. Finished with simple sandals, smooth waves and a soft rose pout, the full look is a home-run hit.

Lucy Hale in Julien Macdonald:As any Pretty Little Liars fan will tell you, we've seen the petite starlet in ugly outfits a plenty. Awkward pink hair streaks, questionable fascinators and tights -- the past five and a half seasons were a sartorial nightmare. Luckily, in a world where A doesn't torment a group of teenage girls, Hale is equipped with a glam squad and a significantly better wardrobe. Coupled with dramatic eyeliner and a slicked-back bun,  this outfit is the epitome of vampy glam. While the mesh paneling is undeniably gothic, the short hem and deep V-neck keep this dress youthful and sexy. Paired with strappy sandals? Definitely gives Aria a run for her money.

Haley Ramm in Pistol Stamen: A relative newbie on the red carpet, this ensemble is a far cry from the clubwear that ran rampant at the event. The flared, midi skirt and modest neckline is by no means reinventing the wheel, and can easilyveer into mumsy territory. However, the subtle texture on the frock as well as Ramm's colorful bracelets made this outfit feel refreshing. Paired with auburn locks and a fresh face, the starlet looked composed and mature.

Maia Mitchel in Giamba: Just got back from the Hamptons or working a step and repeat in Los Angeles? While this look may teeter on the casual side for an award shows, the fuss-free factor of this ensemble merits a spot on this event's best dressed list. It's easy to want to wear (almost) everything that you see on red carpets and runways, but finding something that's stylish and looks comfortable is the true sartorial dream. Whether dressed up with a pair of strappy sandals, as Mitchel did, or coupled with a  pair of gladiator sandals, this look is effortlessly chic in a way that leaves us asking ourselves "Where can I get me one of those?"

Bea Miller: A summer red carpet should be strictly filled with pretty patterns and bright colors, right? Not according to Bea Miller. Between the leather jacket cooly draped over the singer's shoulders and the beautiful jewel-toned jumpsuit, this getup has onlookers undeniably excited for fall fashion. While Miller's jumpsuit appeals to every minimalist, the shoes (though not Trendologist-approved) and jacket are youthful and rebellious. The natural face and beachy waves add the perfect hint of summer.

The 2013 Teen Choice Awards

When it comes to the Teen Choice Awards, age is just a number. No matter how old you are, you're kind of dying to see which celebrities take home the coveted surf board. Additionally, the youthful red carpet is also bombarded with refreshing, high-octane looks. However, that's not to say each ensemble is sartorially superior. Check out my best and worst dressed picks. As always, no attendee is safe.

The Worst

Naya Rivera in Alice + Olivia: I'm sorry, did the Glee star think she was headed to the Sunset Strip? This ensemble is anything but sexy-- it's trashy! As popular as crop tops and bralets are at the moment, pairing this trend with low-rise jeans is a major faux pas. 

One Direction: Welcome to 2013, when dressing up as a pop group has its own set of rules: look similar,not identical. The British boys did a good job at appearing in sync; however, the faux pas run rampant. Liam, why so many layers? It's summer. Why are they all wearing hiking boots? And Harry, dating Taylor Swift doesn't mean you magically turn into John Mayer.

Abigail Breslin: Once upon a time, the Little Miss Sunshine star was one of America's brightest young stars, Though she hasn't done much since her younger years, this ensemble is a twist mix between "Old Abigail Breslin" and "New Abigail Breslin." A modest jacket paired with that super sultry neckline? Is it just me or do you also feel extremely uncomfortable?

Miley Cyrus in Saint Laurent: Quite frankly, the singer "Can't Be Tamed." Though anyone can applaud Cyrus's trim figure, this outfit isn't right for the occasion. A saucy editorial? Absolutely! But a teen award show is a whole other realm. To make matters worse, those white pumps make this outfit look even more trashy. A black pump would've at least added some consistency! 

Hana Mae Lee: I love hats as much as the next fashonista; however, the quirky attendee takes this love too far. If you're trying to great a statement A) Pick a better event such as the Met Gala and B) Choose a better hat. 

The Best

Skyler Astin: The Pitch Perfect star hit the right style notes at Sunday's red carpet. Astin looks casual in a pair of khakis and a simple tee; however, the black jacket is a surefire way to make this outfit sophisticated. Plus, those colorful shoes give this ensemble some much-needed flare.

Kerry Washington in Stella McCartney: Though the leading lady always excels in choosing stunning, event-appropriate ensembles, she especially hit the sartorial nail on the head at this year's Teen Choice Awards. the sophisticated silhouette is perfectly juxtaposed by Stella McCartney's punky print. But should we've expected anything less than spectacular? Both Washington and McCartney are superstars in their respective industries.

Selena Gomez in Cushnie et Ochs: A red carpet goddess, the "Come and Get It" singer has successfully made the transition from "teeny bopper" to a sleek tastemaker. This Cushnie et Ochs number is flattering, but comfortable. Those slits weren't made for a sartorial wallflower-- they are sexy and classy at the same time. On the beauty front, the clean hair gives this look a refined edge. Obsessed! 

The Jonas Brothers: Luckily, this set of singers have red carpet style down to a science. With masculine jackets, black jeans and some sexy scruff, these boys have aced the "look similar, not idea" principle.

Lily Collins in Fausto Puglisi: Though this fashionista's look may not be loved by all-- let's be honest, it's truly a fashion moment-- I'm addicted to this ensemble's drama. The zany Fausto Puglisi skirt is perfectly balanced by a streamlined black tee. As for that subtle headpiece, it's kind of genius-- the perfect way to make a statement without going overboard (a la Hana Mae Lee).

Lucy Hale: Whether she's Aria Montgomery or an aspiring songstress, the pint-sized fashionista is known for her whimsical taste. Lucky for us, Sunday's red carpet was no exception. Not only is the playful fabric combination absolutely heavenly, the bralet and high-waisted skirt leave her baring the appropriate amount of skin-- that was a stab at you, Naya Rivera. Last but not least, her wavy mane adds a dash of glamour to this edgy ensemble.

Shay Mitchell in Jenni Kayne: Take note, Nina Dobrev, this is how to rock a sexy playsuit. The simple color palette takes a back seat, allowing the plunging neckline to stand out. The funky yellow heels and beachy waves are the perfect finishing touches.

Chelsea Kane in Laura Basci: How darling is this monochromatic number? Though crop tops are usually associated with frat-hopping girls, Kane smartly pairs her revealing top with a conservative pencil skirt. Additionally, the contrast between her blonde hair and bright teal is incredibly stunning.

Crystal Reed in Carolina Herrera: What's black, white and chic all over? This ensemble. With cropped pants and defiant hair, Reed is clearly channeling her inner Megan Draper-- and it works! Instead of looking like she's at a themed party, Reed pairs this look with sleek accessories and a red-orange lip. Brava!

Bella Thorne in Fausto Puglisi: It seems as if matching prints were a hot trend! Though Hawaiian printed anything is certifiably tacky, Fausto Puglisi's palm patterns make this fashion don't a do. Surprisingly, it's the variety of colors and the flirty hem that make this ensemble coveted, not too much to handle.

As much as any fashionista loves trends, it's important to know that personal style is all about being yourself. And Tennessee Thomas nails it. The Like drummer's quirky, rocker, and totally British look is to die for.

The Weekly

• Lucy Hale at the ABC Family upfronts: This pretty little liar is on trend! Unless you've been living under a rock, you'll know that pops of neon are totally in. The dress' classic silhouette is balanced by the energetic earrings. The poppy lip makes the neon less abrasive (and always gives Hale's ensemble a dash of personality).
• Lea Michele at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences' screening of Glee (Jenni Kayne): As much as I dislike Lea Michele, I'm obsessed with this ensemble- springtime fresh! I'm so smitten over the texture and metallic component of the dress and heels, respectively. The sleek updo and fresh makeup give this look a fun and feminine vibe.
• Kate Hudson at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner (Jenny Packham): I'm literally obsessed with the glitter overload. The subtle two-tone glitter makes this dress different from its sequined counterparts. Can we talk about that high bun? Tres chic.

TCA 2011: A Mid-Summer's Nightmare

First of all,  I'm very sorry this is a day late. Monday was my birthday-  oh I'm so old- so I was too busy doing some birthday-related activities!  Although I love the summer, this season does leave me missing the red carpet reviews of the winter time. I was so happy to hear the Teen Choice Awards were quickly approaching. As my last year of teen-dom, I figured that the looks would be stellar. I was pretty wrong. Obviously, the Teen Choice Awards are no Oscars; however, where were the cool maxis and summertime glamour that I always crave?  I missed the Teeen awards because I went to go see the new apes movie, but here's a fun clip that I found on YouTube:



He is so cool.



This made my heart go "pitter patter!"

THE WORST: 

• Ashley Greene (Givenchy): This is massively disappointing. While I do love my Givenchy, I think this was styled in the most boring way possible. The stick straight hair and the lines of the dress give this look absolutely no movement. And the strappy heels? Way too chunky and off-balanced for this look. A colored, or even nude, pump would make this outfit a million times better. And the diamond bracelet? Where did this come from? I thought this was supposed to be a super sleek look- this is too mis-matched. I've seen better looks.
• Tyra Banks (Thierry Mugler): I think this outfit speaks for itself but, in the event you're not seeing it the same way I am,  here it goes: while this may be cool for the runway, I despise this as a red carpet look. It's way too sexual for the teen awards. Sure, her body looks fine; however, I'm not okay with this look in the slightest. Bad, Tyra, Bad!
• Cory Monteith (John Varvatos): I'm going to make think simple: his tight pants make me uncomfortable. 
• Zooey Deschanel (Miu Miu): I see Zooey's bringing the old lady to the Teen Choice Awards. I love Miu Miu but this dress, just not for this youthful event. Also the black clutch and pumps? Way too matchy matchy! Also, that heel just looks whimpy. I dont' know how she could improve this look, but she's cooler than this.
• Rebecca Black (I-don't-wanna know): Look, I know Rebecca Black isn't a budding fashionista; however, shouldn't you live it up and wear haute couture during your fifteen minutes of fame? The color looked nice on her, but it was the farthest thing from flattering. I guess putting her on the worst dressed list is also an attack on her popularity: I really hate that song.
• Gillian Jacobs (I-don't-wanna-know-either): THIS IS SO WRONG! I get really upset when people mix silver and gold in such a nonchalant way. The gold of her black dress is such a statement aspect and the silver in her chunky shoes...too much! Also, why would you pair an elegant dress with such chunky shoes?! THE WORST. Her hair is fine; however, her makeup is totally boring. She just looks so blah and so mismatched.
• Emma Stone (Dior Resort): Biggest disappointment. While I love her hair and makeup, WHAT IS THIS DRESS! It's so sloppy and not even chic: it's so messy! Her legs also look way too pale and as if she's wearing tights! This is just wrong all over the place and I wish it would stop.
• AnnaSophia Robb (Malandrino): Is this a joke? The shoes are insanely frumpy and that dress? So awkward! The length, the sad print, the matronly hair- AWKWARD.  And wasn't the last thing she was in The Bridge to Terabithia? 
• Grace Phipps (Something Tragic): I feel bad because her team obviously doesn't like her enough to make her look chic. That awkward pageant-esque aspect on her dress is the worst. It's like trying to make a normal American Apparel dress chic. FAIL. And those shoes? This isn't even edgy, just tragic. Why don't these people learn?
• Lucy Hale (Cengiz Abazoglu): Too much skin. She just looks like a major slut. But the shoes are really sick! But on the real, have some class please. 

THE BEST:

• Taylor Lautner (AllSaints): This is the perfect male movie star look. The awesome bomber is so chic and fashion forward; however, the jeans keep it casual and allow his true hotness to radiate. And, since this is the Teen's Choice Awards, nobody really expects him to rock a full-on suit. So this is the perfect way to look chic and effortless. Bravo!
• Fergie (Dolce and Gabbana): Although her roots do look a little funky, I truly love this dress. I think it's the perfect mini that's super fun, fashion forward, and shows off the body in a sultry way. Also, I always think of bumble bees whenever I see black and yellow so I love anything that makes black and yellow cool! Since the dress is so poppin', I'm glad she kept the jewels, shoes, and clutch on a minimal level. Some may hate it; however, I love it! 
• Zoe Saldana (Lanvin): Ultimate j'adore. I love the midi hem of this dress: so classy, yet the metallic color makes this Lanvin gown youthful and fun! While I would normally hate the belt, it keeps this look casual, as well as the minimal jewels. And the gold shoes give this dress an extra pop! She's so beautiful and always dresses like a stunner!
• Selena Gomez (Erin Fetherson): Ugh, she always gets this so right. The asymmetry is so awesome and minimal-izing the jewels is the perfect match to that fabulous sash. I love how she always makes fashion so much fun! The long hair makes this look youthful and the hot pink clutch? Phenomenal! I also love how her shoes give a punch of fun! While I love a fun bag, what happens to the look when you're not carrying the bag? Hence, this look is right on!
• Nina Dobrev (Dolce and Gabbana): I like this look because it's so simple, clean, yet fun. While I'm not a fan of the black pump, I think it makes this look a little more grounded as opposed to a lighter shoe. Since the checkers are so small, Dobrev, avoids looking like a modern Dorothy, which is lovely. The stacked bracelets makes this look even more youthful and I love the high ponytail! Classy, yet refreshing: major love!
