13 Best Red Carpet Looks from 2013

Besides the highly-anticipated fashion months, awards season is arguably the most exciting time of the year for any fashion expert. What will the nominees wear? How will the dresses differ from the original runway look? And how will this slew of award-worthy gowns differ from those from last year? Before time runs out for 2013, and we are then bombarded with a new group of evening dresses, let's take a sartorial walk down memory lane. In no particular order, check out the best red carpet looks of
the year.

Zoe Saldana at the Out of the Furnance Premiere (Calvin Klein): Combining crop tops and skirts is one of the coolest ways to shake up red carpet glamour. My favorite example of this emerging trend? Zoe Saldana in Calvin Klein, naturally. The actress can do no wrong, period. I love this blue-grey hue with her complexion as well as those tan shoes. This outfit reigns superior because she shows just enough skin and the pleated skirt keeps it classy. Brava, Miss Saldana. (Photo)
Anne Hathaway at the 2013 BAFTAs (Burberry Prorsum): This year, all eyes were on Hathaway. Sure, word broke that she's one of the more annoying actresses in the industry; however, fashion fanatics were keen to know what the soon-to-be Academy Award winner would wear to each award show. Though Hathaway mostly stuck to pastels in the United States, the starlet opted for a darker hue across the pond. Don't get me wrong- I love a frilly evening gown; however, that's the only thing Hathaway would wear until 2013. A departure from her glamazon past, this ensemble is ultra chic, modern, and portrays her as a serious actress. Plus, the pixie cut looks incredible with
this silhouette. (Photo)

Chrissy Teigen at the 2013 Grammy Awards (Joy Cioci): There are many reason to be jealous of Chrissy Teigen: her husband, cooking skills, and stellar style, just to name a few.Though this ensemble is overtly sexy, Teigen keeps it classy with minimal jewels. Plus, the lace detailing gives this look a girly twist. Thankfully, Chrissy knows how to spice up an all noir outfit-- with a punchy lip! A quintessential Grammys ensemble, and femme fatale never looked
so good! (Photo)
Kerry Washington at the 2013 Screen Actors Guild Awards (Rodarte): Legend, or Vanity Fair, has it that Miss Washington was the best dressed celebrity of the year. Though her on-screen persona, Olivia Pope, opts for high-brow brands such as Giorgio Armani and Prada, Washington has a penchant for newer labels like Stella McCartney, Miu Miu, and Rodarte. As one of the first major red carpet events of the year, this Rodarte number put Washington on the sartorial map. The angelic white is amazing with her complexion. The fitted bodice and slick ponytail perfectly juxtapose the slightly ruffled skirt. Though the Scandal star has wowed at least a dozen more times this year, this look exemplifies her versatility and on-the-pulse perspective. Can't wait to see more fabulous looks in 2014!  (Photo)
Lea Michele at the 2013 Golden Globe Awards (Elie Saab): The pint-sized starlet knows how to make a scene. Whether she's belting a touching ballad or sporting extravagant evening wear, the Glee star isn't afraid to getting some  attention. Though this Elie Saab brings a lot of sparkle to such a petite figure, Michele opts for a nonchalant look and ultimately rocks this look. The breezy waves makes this look appropriately more casual, which is ideal because the Golden Globes and Academy Awards are two very different events. The minimal jewels complement the dress without pushing the envelope. (Photo)
Emma Watson at the 2013 Met Ball (Prabal Gurung): After years of red carpets and press junkets, it's still amazing to see how aware Watson is of the line that separates sultry and slutty. Even though this Prabal Gurung dress shows a lot of skin, it is anything but trashy. Instead, Watson is a mature starlet who doesn't need a tabloid scandal or fashion faux pas to get attention. Additionally, I love the attention to detail: the asymmetrical lines from the dress are replicated in Watson's strappy heels. (Photo)
Jennifer Lawrence at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival (Christian Dior): It's no secret that the Academy Award winner is essentially a walking advertisement for the esteemed fashion house. Out of all the Dior dresses she sported in 2013, this white number perfectly captures Raf's forward-thinking aesthetic while maintaing Lawrence's spot as an "It Girl." While the bright pumps perfectly match the dress's details, Lawrence's choppy lob (a.k.a. long bob) keep this look fresh and relevant.  (Photo)
Selena Gomez at the 2013 Teen Choice Awards (Cushnie et Ochs): Over the past few years, Selena Gomez has transformed from a Disney Channel star to a bonafide starlet. Though she's sported every designer from Atelier Versace to Dolce and Gabbana, this Cushnie et Ochs dress puts the singer on the sartorial map. The traditional shape is revived with sultry slits and a yummy emerald green hue. With minimal accessories, nude pumps, and slick hair, Gomez looks extremely sophisticated without compromising her age. (Photo)
Sarah Jessica Parker at the 2013 Met Gala (Giles): Sarah Jessica Parker is never afraid of a fashion challenge. Between sporting avant garde hats and wearing countless colors, fabrics, and silhouettes, she's done it all. It takes a very fearless fashion to sport something so "hit or miss" to the ultra chic Met Ball. But with courage comes confidence, and the Sex and the City star's look was flawless. Instead of wearing studded threads like other superstars, SJP gave the punk theme a classic twist. That ornate headpiece? To die for. There is something so new age royalty about this look, which is extremely inspiring and reminds us that fashion should be funs and requires taking risks. An ensemble could be risky; however, the right occasion and loads of confidence can make the world's difference. (Photo)
Cate Blanchett at the New York Blue Jasmine Premiere (Balenciaga Edition): Not to sound dramatic, but Cate Blanchett could wear a burlap sack and look effortlessly fabulous. However, this Balenciaga number is indisputably the greatest dress she's worn all year.  Most actresses succumb to a column silhouette dress; however, this innovative shape makes evening wear exciting again. Though monochromatic outfits are nothing new, the appliqued details revitalizes this trend without looking too extravagant. (Photo)
Kiernan Shipka at the 2013 Screen Actors Guild Awards (Oscar de la Renta): It's a little sad that the Mad Men actress probably has better taste than some people who are twice her age. Though it's easy to be jealous of such a chic tot, it's imperative to applaud her style. Instead of piling on the gems, Shipka smartly nixed the accessories in order to let her pale pink Oscar de la Renta number take center stage. Major.  (Photo)

Rose Byrne at the 2013 Emmy Awards (Calvin Klein): Leave it to Clavin Klein to create an unconventionally sleek ensemble, and leave it to Rose Byrne to wear it perfectly. Unlike most minimalist looks, The Internship actress juxtaposed the dress's clean shape with voluminous hair. Feminine and minimalist at the same time, Byrne proves that she's a versatile fashionista. (Photo)
Emily Blunt at the 2013 Critics Choice Movie Awards (Miu Miu): Whether she's wearing muted pastels or vibrant brights, the Looper starlet never ceases to impress me. Unlike some of her other cutting-edge looks, this ensemble is unapologetically chic and sophisticated. Though the silhouette is very traditional, the embellished collar and alternative hemline makes this outfit effortlessly chic. Blunt spices up this classic dress with pearl-adorned accessories and a punchy pout. Don't you think this is something Audrey Hepburn would wear? (Photo)

13 Favorite Runway Looks of 2013

Whether you're dashing from show to show or examining every look on Style.com, fashion month is the ultimate time for style savants to gush over the latest silhouettes, most delicious fabrics, and best emerging trends. But after thousands of looks, which have obviously been curated in your fashion-forward Pinterest boards, it's hard to remember every pleat, trouser, and shoe that sashays down the catwalk. However, there are some runway ready ensembles that are so ingrained into your memory that you can't get them out of your head.  In no particular order, here are the top 13 looks that will inspire me well into 2014.

Proenza Schouler Spring 2014 RTW, Look 21: I dare you to tell me you don't adore everything that Lorenzo Hernandez and Jack McCollough design. You can't, right? Exactly. The Parsons classmates turned Proenza Schouler masterminds always deliver perfectly au courant pieces. While their entire spring collection was to die for, I have a (not-so) healthy obsession with the finale looks. A cross bodice with metallic pleats? Perfection. What I love so much about this look is that it's unapologetically now and anyone who has a penchant for divine threads will adore this. Lauren Santo Domingo was spotted rocking a similar look from the spring collection as was Rooney Mara. And with the help of any secret admirer with endless connections and cash, I will also happily wear this look. But in cream, please. Wouldn't this make for the perfect New Year's Eve ensemble?
Belstaff Pre-Fall 2014, Look 16: Bells and whistles asides, it's always comforting to see something on the runway that not only you would wear on a daily basis, but you can also copy with the clothes you already own. For me, this ensemble hit the nail on the head. Head to toe, I love this look so much that I can envision myself wearing it any day of the week (if weather permits). Belstaff has come such a long way since its waterproof jacket days, and I sincerely admire designers who can still make fashion upscale, yet accessible, to the masses. Brava!
Chloé Fall 2013 RTW, Look 3: I've been something of a cape fanatic for a couple years now. It all started with a short purple cape that I sported on my very first trip to London. In no time, my mere fascination accelerated into an obsession. Whether it was a black cape from a local boutique or a plaid cape on Brick Lane, I became so enamored with the feminine, yet powerful, image that capes brought. Isn't it about time Olivia Pope wears capes on the daily? A vibrant blue that stands out amongst a sea of black, this cape caught my eye months ago. When I saw it in person this summer, my feelings only increased. Paired with a sleek black dress and versatile boots, this look best exemplifies how to wear a cape without looking like an old maid.
Céline Fall 2013 RTW, Look 25: In case you didn't receive the memo, plaid was very big this fall. From Saint Laurent to Moschino, everyone was giving this lumberjack print a very chic makeover. Without a doubt, my favorite example of this trend was Céline's luxe tartan pieces. The traditional silhouette was paired with checks that gave us a new way to look at plaid. Phoebe Philo's heavy emphasis on the white lines offered a dash of minimalist modernity. The otherwise neutral ensemble made this a look that anyone could wear. It's perfect for the ambitious career woman, the Park Avenue housewife who is stopping by the latest PTA meeting before going out to eat, and even that downtown gal who's forced to go to an uptown gala. Try imagining yourself in this outfit. I promise you'll like what you see.
Preen by Thornton Bregazzi Spring 2014 RTW, Look 17: On a day-to-day basis, what fashionista doesn't want to wear an effortlessly chic ensemble? Exactly. No fuss, just fashion. I adore this look because it's the perfect way to get a high-octane impact without trying too hard. Whether you're going to work or a coffee date, this ensemble is the ideal way to tell onlookers that you're up to date with trends but don't need to flaunt them.

Christian Dior Spring 2014 RTW, Look 58: At first, it was an alarming combination: Raf Simons and Christian Dior. While the former is synonymous with pure minimalism, style spectators always know that Dior will provide feminine ensembles with a modern twist. Would Simons give the design house yet another New Look? While Simons has a perspective that is very different from his predecessor, John Galliano, his designs have yet to disappoint me. While his latest spring collection seemed promising, it wasn't until the slew of jacquard dresses that I knew I was in love. A far cry from Simons's usual aesthetic, this dress revived Christian Dior's flouncy reputation while keeping it updated. Raf, you had me at the floral ambiance.
Tibi Spring 2014 RTW, Look 10: Over the past few seasons, I've had the pleasure of watching Tibi turn into a premier American brand. While Tibi used to be the go-to line for flirty tea dresses and fun prints, I love the sportswear direction Amy Smilovic has taken. Without a doubt, the spring collection was my favorite Tibi show thus far. With a nature loving theme, I adore how this look channels street style modernity through a very "back to the basics" lens. If you give me an easy one-piece, I'll be happy; however, Smilovic's use of contrasting fabrics and accessories made this one look I will never forget.

Valentino Fall 2013 Couture, Look 47: Out of all the official couture design houses, Valentino always amazes me with its hypnotizing patterns, bevy of slim-fitting silhouettes, and all-around regal air. Everything about this dress screams "Dainty Princess." Even though it is entirely sheer, the modest undergarments prevent an outlandishly sultry moment. It's one of the looks that is so special, it should probably be in an everything-proof vault or framed. Thank you, Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri, thank you very much.

Carven Fall 2013 RTW, Look 25: Fall was the season of the coat. Though Carven featured gorgeous coats in dreamy pastels, this camel look is my favorite by far. There's something so standard about a camel ensemble; however, I strongly believe this hue is one of the most underestimated neutrals around. I love how this look is so sleek, yet the light pink and tan cracked top makes this more than another minimalist ensemble. Plus, those shoes are just divine!
Dries Van Noten Spring 2014 RTW, Look 47: To be perfectly honest, it's impossible to categorize your style into one overarching adjective. You consider yourself "girly" until you swoon over a tough Balenciaga leather jacket. You're "classic" until you take a look at Prada's latest spring collection. And you're "minimalist" until you fall head over heels in love with Dries Van Noten's spring ruffles and dramatics pleats. I adore a clean, tailored ensemble; however, this look gives a neat look a frilly edge. Of course, you could never wear this look to the grocery store, however, Dries Van Noten gifts us with a relatively somber silhouette that doesn't compromise his extravagant collection. The long shorts are very Calvin Klein sleek while the top is reminiscent of something you would normally sport at the couture shows. The result? An outfit that deserves a standing ovation.

Stella McCartney 2014 Resort, Look 4: Every few seasons, there comes a collection that is 100 percent perfect. From the python print, to the embellished threads, to the floral patterns, Stella McCartney's cruise collection was just that. While the prints were indisputably feminine, McCartney pairs them with modern (and sometimes tomboyish) shapes. This look perfectly captures McCartney's design aesthetic for the cruise collection:
girly and current. I would like one of everything, please.

Altuzarra Spring 2014 RTW, Look 29: If Joseph Altuzarra's spring collection wasn't the most buzzed about New York collection, I don't know what was. Between the swarm of languid skirts and show-stopping metallics, this group of looks demand your undivided attention. I love this look because it combines the two focal trends from Altuzarra's collection without being too abrasive. To keep the attention on the gorgeous clothes, Altuzarra finishes this look with a pair of simple pumps. From date night to a charity gala, this look is the ultimate ensemble for any city's "It Girl."

Balenciaga Spring 2014 RTW, Look 37: If you didn't love enough Alexander Wang's eponymous brand label, he's been doing wonders at Balenciaga. Wonders, I say! For example, his spring collection was a perfect
mélange of Wang's cutting-edge aesthetic and Balenciaga's high expectations. Old and new come together with this look: the silhouette is quite traditional, but sheer skirt mixed with the embellished dress bring something new to the table. J'adore!

Get The Look: American Hustle

Awards season is coming, awards season is coming! For movie buffs, it's the perfect time to essentially live at your movie theater and analyze each critically acclaimed contender. If you are a complete fashion nerd, these next few months allow you to geek out over red carpet dresses. "Of course she'd wear the Elie Saab" and "Delpozo, why are you so beautiful?" are just two things style savants are bound to say. But in the (not-so) rare event you have a thing for both movies and fashion (a la yours truly), Awards season is the perfect time to do all the fun, aforementioned activities and gush over the on-screen ensembles.

In case you don't keep up with nominated films, let me give you a quick lesson: American Hustle is one of the most buzzed about movies of the season. With an all-star cast-- Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, and Jennifer Lawrence-- Silver Linings Playbook genius David O. Russell as director, and a criminal plot that is too juicy to ignore, don't be surprised if this flick takes home a slew of statues this season.

But unlike many cinema groupies, I have an additional appreciation for the movie: the clothes. Amy Adam's Sydney Prosser is dressed to the nines in Diane von Furstenberg wrap dresses, sultry low-necked frocks, and even some dangerously crimped hair. On the other sartorial hand, Jennifer Lawrence's Rosalyn Rosenfeld wears everything from salacious white dresses, to Real Housewife worthy track suits, to eccentric fur, to retro prints. I know what you're thinking, pure bliss.

"Wait a second," you say as your inner fashion nerd rears its oh-so glamorous head. "A seventies revival sounds all too familiar."

You are right ladies and gent. If you recall, seventies chic was all the rage amongst top cruise collections. While Gucci brought a healthy dosage of shimmer and lengthy hemlines, Louis Vuitton returned retro glam to the average working woman. Let's not forget that Emilio Pucci's cruise collection boasted the perfect printed maxi dress and Chloé's Claire Waight Keller successfully infused retro trousers into a very nautical presentation. Is it just me, or are you also yearning for some very groovy time travel?

Luckily, we don't need to resort to the Saturday Night Fever days to unleash our inner disco queens (or kings). With a few styling tips (and some swinging pieces), you can rock a look that is equal parts modern and seventies-inspired.

american hustle 1

You heard it from Rachel Zoe, and you saw it in Austin Powers in Goldmember, gold lamé is the perfect way to revisit the gilded decade sans time machine. Don't have any gold lamé stored in your closet, and that Lanvin gold dress doesn't fit into your shopping budget? Opt for a shimmery gold dress. Add some spice to this look with silver accessories. Yes, style savant, it's okay to clash your metallics. As for your beauty routine, save the bold lip for a less extravagant ensemble. Complete this look with a messy updo and a slight smokey eye.

Round neck sweater / Lauren Ralph Lauren capri pants, $230 / Yves Saint Laurent sandals, $1,205 / Yves Saint Laurent crossbody handbag / Dolce & Gabbana clip on earrings / Chloé tortoise shell glasses, $160 / Nars cosmetic

During this style era, women wore the pants. Paying homage to the great Katharine Hepburn, this decade was the time to sport your high-waisted trousers. Revitalize this fad with a voluminous top in a neutral hue. Not only does this look give a nod to the days when Jane Birkin and Bianca Jagger ruled the world, it's bound to make any street style photographer swoon. As a finishing touch, platform sandals will complete this look and elongate your legs. Unlike the previous look, this outfit is perfect for a colored lip. Nars's Pigalle shade is perfect--it gives your pout a little punch without pushing the envelope.

american hustle 2

Diane Von Furstenberg dress / Little Mistress white coat, $115 / Yves Saint Laurent black pumps / Ralph Lauren satchel handbag / Lauren Ralph Lauren earrings

As any fashion groupie knows, Diane von Furstenberg's famous wrap dresses are the epitome of seventies chic. Channel your inner working girl by pairing this frock with some polished accessories. To give this look a seventies savvy twist, add a pair of gold hoops- very stylish! Though fur was all the rage during this era, throwing on a (faux) fur jacket is too costumey. Instead, try a wrap jacket with a (faux) fur collar-- you'll get the same results with this classic alternative.

Trendologist-Approved Gift Guide: The Athlete

Sometimes, it feels as if you and your loved ones are just like the Spice Girls (without the utterly 90's ensembles, that is): you break out into song frequently, value girl power, and are always looking for ways to spice up your life. As a style savant, you are naturally Posh Spice, but what about your other friends? Luckily, your group's resident Sporty Spice is quite obvious. She (or he) is the one who lives at the gym, has minimal body fat, and is always saying words like "organic." As jealous as you may be, you must applaud your fitness guru for always staying in shape. And your holiday gift to him or her should reflect that.  Just because your favorite athletes spend their time participating in triathlons, mediating on the beach, or rock climbing doesn't mean that they won't enjoy a stylish gift. This year, combine le sportif and unapologetically chic for one perfect present.

Nike FlyKnit Lunar +1 Shoes ($130): Though this pick is the obvious gift option for any exercise guru, these kicks will have your recipients praising you for years. That's right, years. It's no secret that Nike provides only the best and most stylish sneakers; however, this innovative model takes chic gym shoes to the next level. Between the lightweight model, updated cushioning system, and au courant color combinations, these Nike sneakers reign superior.  (Photo)
LPD New York Team Tisci Shirt ($85): Bring your loved one's athletic attitude from the track to the street. If you have yet to swoon over LPD New York's fabulous designer team shirts, this potential present gives typical sports jerseys a fashion-forward twist. Give this gift a personal touch by picking your fitness nut's favorite designer. From Riccardo Tisci, to Miuccia Prada, to Marc Jacobs, there's a bevy of fashion geniuses to choose from. (Photo)

love this pick?   (Photo)

I love baseball-inspired bomber jackets and chic track pants as much as the next fashionista; however, active accessories are the perfect way to give some spring to your fitness queen's sartorial step without redefining her entire look. The navy and gold combination is to die for while the embroidered emblem gives this pick a preppy twist. Not only can your work out expert wear sport-ify her look with this cap, it's perfect for an afternoon run or hike!  (Photo)
Lululemon Mat ($68): While your resident fitness connoisseur utilizes the weights and medicine balls his or her gym supplies, every avid yoga fanatic has their own mats. With downward dog-approved cushioning and a polyurethane coating that prevents any and all un-zen mishaps, this pick is the perfect way for your favorite yoga groupie to practice in style.  Namaste. (Photo)

Not only does this bottle unscrew from both sides, which makes it super easy to clean, Clean Bottle's square mode;l won't roll away post workout. Can we say perfect? (Photo)
