Back to Black: 5 Looks That Slayed on the Golden Globes Read Carpet

Funerals, goths and the handy, albeit risk-adverse, LBD — let's face it: Nowadays, dressing in head-to-toe black is either a sign of mourning or deemed dull.

But according to the 2018 Golden Globes red carpet, a noir ensemble can exude strength, solidarity and courage — all while looking indisputably chic. Last night, the vast majority of attendees donned the dark hue to support Time's Up, an initiative led by Hollywood A-Listers to bring forth change for women everywhere. And let's just say it's about time.

From bringing fellow sisters and activists as dates to Oprah's borderline presidential speech, the night offered a glimmer of hope in the wake of the horrid and inexcusable string of sexual assault allegations.

And sartorially speaking, the night did not disappoint. Feather, sparkle, tea-length hemlines and one fabulous turban looks proved black is far from boring. Below, the five best looks of the night.

Tracee Ellis Ross in Marc Jacobs

When it comes to fashion, Tracee Ellis Ross has a "go big or go home" mentality — and last night's lewk did not disappoint. The Black-ish star is one of the very few red carpet darlings who dresses for herself instead of the masses. To the untrained eye, the turban is considered outrĂ©, but the fashion set is giving it a standing ovation. And just because the blackout honored a very important and serious issue didn't mean she couldn't have fun with her ensemble. Ellis Ross' bright red lip and dainty drop earrings add drama without taking the attention away from that iconic turban.

Kerry Washington in Prabal Gurung

Does it get any better than Kerry Washington? From head-to-toe, Washington's look screams "good girl revolts." Speaking of toes, let's talk about the shoes. Sandals and pumps are oftentimes the shoe of choice for attendees, the sheer, embellished booties are so cool and covetable, you can't help but want a pair yourself. And when paired with her wavy hair and slitted Prabal Gurung dress, they're equal parts feminine and fashion-forward.

Dakota Johnson in Gucci

Simple in the front, yet glitzy in the back, Dakota Johnson's gown is something of a fashion mullet. But what do you expect when the designer behind the masterpiece is Alessandro Michele, maximalist creative director of Gucci? The messy ponytail and natural makeup are the perfect cool girl counters to the dramatic train. Brava!

Alison Brie in Vassilis Zoulias

Women wore the pants during last night's ceremony— literally and figuratively. Take Alison Brie, who stunned in a half-dress, half-pants look courtesy of Vassilis Zoulias. Not only is the ensemble spot-on for such a monumental night, the hint of pants offers a modern, refreshing take on the traditional ballgown. For an extra dose of glam, the plunging diamond necklace complements the deep sweetheart neckline.

Diane Kruger in Prada

Diane Kruger is one of those fashion plates who could make a burlap sack look chic, so it's no surprise she looks absolutely heavenly in this Prada number. Capes have been a Golden Globe mainstay since Lupita Nyong'o donned her now-iconic Ralph Lauren cape dress in 2014. Equal parts ethereal and feminine, Kruger's take looks like it came right out of a Slim Aarons' photo. As a bonus, the delicate beading is the glam we needed on this otherwise dark red carpet.

13 Best Red Carpet Looks from 2013

Besides the highly-anticipated fashion months, awards season is arguably the most exciting time of the year for any fashion expert. What will the nominees wear? How will the dresses differ from the original runway look? And how will this slew of award-worthy gowns differ from those from last year? Before time runs out for 2013, and we are then bombarded with a new group of evening dresses, let's take a sartorial walk down memory lane. In no particular order, check out the best red carpet looks of
the year.

Zoe Saldana at the Out of the Furnance Premiere (Calvin Klein): Combining crop tops and skirts is one of the coolest ways to shake up red carpet glamour. My favorite example of this emerging trend? Zoe Saldana in Calvin Klein, naturally. The actress can do no wrong, period. I love this blue-grey hue with her complexion as well as those tan shoes. This outfit reigns superior because she shows just enough skin and the pleated skirt keeps it classy. Brava, Miss Saldana. (Photo)
Anne Hathaway at the 2013 BAFTAs (Burberry Prorsum): This year, all eyes were on Hathaway. Sure, word broke that she's one of the more annoying actresses in the industry; however, fashion fanatics were keen to know what the soon-to-be Academy Award winner would wear to each award show. Though Hathaway mostly stuck to pastels in the United States, the starlet opted for a darker hue across the pond. Don't get me wrong- I love a frilly evening gown; however, that's the only thing Hathaway would wear until 2013. A departure from her glamazon past, this ensemble is ultra chic, modern, and portrays her as a serious actress. Plus, the pixie cut looks incredible with
this silhouette. (Photo)

Chrissy Teigen at the 2013 Grammy Awards (Joy Cioci): There are many reason to be jealous of Chrissy Teigen: her husband, cooking skills, and stellar style, just to name a few.Though this ensemble is overtly sexy, Teigen keeps it classy with minimal jewels. Plus, the lace detailing gives this look a girly twist. Thankfully, Chrissy knows how to spice up an all noir outfit-- with a punchy lip! A quintessential Grammys ensemble, and femme fatale never looked
so good! (Photo)
Kerry Washington at the 2013 Screen Actors Guild Awards (Rodarte): Legend, or Vanity Fair, has it that Miss Washington was the best dressed celebrity of the year. Though her on-screen persona, Olivia Pope, opts for high-brow brands such as Giorgio Armani and Prada, Washington has a penchant for newer labels like Stella McCartney, Miu Miu, and Rodarte. As one of the first major red carpet events of the year, this Rodarte number put Washington on the sartorial map. The angelic white is amazing with her complexion. The fitted bodice and slick ponytail perfectly juxtapose the slightly ruffled skirt. Though the Scandal star has wowed at least a dozen more times this year, this look exemplifies her versatility and on-the-pulse perspective. Can't wait to see more fabulous looks in 2014!  (Photo)
Lea Michele at the 2013 Golden Globe Awards (Elie Saab): The pint-sized starlet knows how to make a scene. Whether she's belting a touching ballad or sporting extravagant evening wear, the Glee star isn't afraid to getting some  attention. Though this Elie Saab brings a lot of sparkle to such a petite figure, Michele opts for a nonchalant look and ultimately rocks this look. The breezy waves makes this look appropriately more casual, which is ideal because the Golden Globes and Academy Awards are two very different events. The minimal jewels complement the dress without pushing the envelope. (Photo)
Emma Watson at the 2013 Met Ball (Prabal Gurung): After years of red carpets and press junkets, it's still amazing to see how aware Watson is of the line that separates sultry and slutty. Even though this Prabal Gurung dress shows a lot of skin, it is anything but trashy. Instead, Watson is a mature starlet who doesn't need a tabloid scandal or fashion faux pas to get attention. Additionally, I love the attention to detail: the asymmetrical lines from the dress are replicated in Watson's strappy heels. (Photo)
Jennifer Lawrence at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival (Christian Dior): It's no secret that the Academy Award winner is essentially a walking advertisement for the esteemed fashion house. Out of all the Dior dresses she sported in 2013, this white number perfectly captures Raf's forward-thinking aesthetic while maintaing Lawrence's spot as an "It Girl." While the bright pumps perfectly match the dress's details, Lawrence's choppy lob (a.k.a. long bob) keep this look fresh and relevant.  (Photo)
Selena Gomez at the 2013 Teen Choice Awards (Cushnie et Ochs): Over the past few years, Selena Gomez has transformed from a Disney Channel star to a bonafide starlet. Though she's sported every designer from Atelier Versace to Dolce and Gabbana, this Cushnie et Ochs dress puts the singer on the sartorial map. The traditional shape is revived with sultry slits and a yummy emerald green hue. With minimal accessories, nude pumps, and slick hair, Gomez looks extremely sophisticated without compromising her age. (Photo)
Sarah Jessica Parker at the 2013 Met Gala (Giles): Sarah Jessica Parker is never afraid of a fashion challenge. Between sporting avant garde hats and wearing countless colors, fabrics, and silhouettes, she's done it all. It takes a very fearless fashion to sport something so "hit or miss" to the ultra chic Met Ball. But with courage comes confidence, and the Sex and the City star's look was flawless. Instead of wearing studded threads like other superstars, SJP gave the punk theme a classic twist. That ornate headpiece? To die for. There is something so new age royalty about this look, which is extremely inspiring and reminds us that fashion should be funs and requires taking risks. An ensemble could be risky; however, the right occasion and loads of confidence can make the world's difference. (Photo)
Cate Blanchett at the New York Blue Jasmine Premiere (Balenciaga Edition): Not to sound dramatic, but Cate Blanchett could wear a burlap sack and look effortlessly fabulous. However, this Balenciaga number is indisputably the greatest dress she's worn all year.  Most actresses succumb to a column silhouette dress; however, this innovative shape makes evening wear exciting again. Though monochromatic outfits are nothing new, the appliqued details revitalizes this trend without looking too extravagant. (Photo)
Kiernan Shipka at the 2013 Screen Actors Guild Awards (Oscar de la Renta): It's a little sad that the Mad Men actress probably has better taste than some people who are twice her age. Though it's easy to be jealous of such a chic tot, it's imperative to applaud her style. Instead of piling on the gems, Shipka smartly nixed the accessories in order to let her pale pink Oscar de la Renta number take center stage. Major.  (Photo)

Rose Byrne at the 2013 Emmy Awards (Calvin Klein): Leave it to Clavin Klein to create an unconventionally sleek ensemble, and leave it to Rose Byrne to wear it perfectly. Unlike most minimalist looks, The Internship actress juxtaposed the dress's clean shape with voluminous hair. Feminine and minimalist at the same time, Byrne proves that she's a versatile fashionista. (Photo)
Emily Blunt at the 2013 Critics Choice Movie Awards (Miu Miu): Whether she's wearing muted pastels or vibrant brights, the Looper starlet never ceases to impress me. Unlike some of her other cutting-edge looks, this ensemble is unapologetically chic and sophisticated. Though the silhouette is very traditional, the embellished collar and alternative hemline makes this outfit effortlessly chic. Blunt spices up this classic dress with pearl-adorned accessories and a punchy pout. Don't you think this is something Audrey Hepburn would wear? (Photo)

Green with Envy

Like I would be able to start this blog tomorrow. The Golden Globes haven't even started as I begin this blog post and I have so much to say! I've been sitting on my couch for three hours, attached to the television and the dresses?! OOOF! Amazing. Some look great and some...well..don't,  but that's what I'm here to talk about!

So let's get started, eh?
THE WORST
  • Jennifer Love Hewitt (Marchesa): I think she's a really pretty lady, but her outfits are just terrible. It was just too matchy and senior prom-esque. And the hair was just a battered bee's nest. There was no "pop", no "wow" factor. I don't know how she did it, but Jennifer Love Hewitt made Marchesa boring. That's just not okay.
  • Julianne Hough (Marchesa): Julianne's biggest problem is that she's trying too hard. Usually, I'd love the idea of this jeweled neckline, but I really hate it here. It's way too forced!  The up- do is really ruining it for me, I think a sleek ponytail would have made this oh so sophisticated. It's just a bit unbalanced, which is the problem. If it had a silt and paired with some fabulous shoes, I'd love. But the hair is poof and the collar is so bold, it just makes the rest of the look boring.
  • Kyra Sedgwick (Pucci): Been there, done that. It's a mix of Diane Kruger and Lea Michelle. I just don't like that. Usually, she has so many fabulous outfits, this was just not good enough. It was boring and not Globes material. This color is way too young for her. I'm just not a fan at all.  Does that sound harsh? I'm really sorry!
  • Julie Bowen (Tadashi Shoji): She's gorgeous and I'm obsessed with her on Modern Family , but not this look. I do love the color on her, but I wish the texture was either on the skirt or bodice, not both. Preferably, the skirt. For her age, it just seems like a bit too much. While she looks gorgeous, her other accessories are also lacking; a metallic bag would've looked so cool with this dress and I would prefer a darker shoe.  But all in all, it was satisfactory.
  • Helena Bonham Carter (Vivienne Westwood): This is the worst outfit in the whole wide world. I repeat, this is tragic. Just to re-emphasize the fact, just look at this and cringe. I don't care how quirky you want to be, what makes us unique makes us shine, but MATCH YOUR SHOES. Nothing about this is alright, but it would've been a bit better if she matched her shoes. Does she have a stylist? She should get one. This is horrendous. I hate this more than I've ever hated a dress. This an insult.
Photo Cred
  • January Jones (Versace): If this is best dressed, I will think something's wrong with fashion today. This is completely taste-less.  Yes, she's a gorgeous woman, but this is too much. People may not know this, but it is possible for people to show some skin, look sexy, and remain classy.  Her hair and makeup looks so timeless, but this is so trashy.
  • Emma Stone (Calvin Klein):  I think she looks gorgeous, but I'm just using her Klein dress as ammunition against minimalism. The peachy color blends in with her skin too much and her recently blonde hair makes her look so bland. What would've made this look so much better is a red lip or some dramatic makeup. What I hated was how forgettable it is.
  • Elisabeth Moss (Donna Karan): I'm going to make this really simple: great dress, terrible accessories. This look single-handedly proves how terrible accessories can lead to a terrible look. Am I using the word terrible too much? Oh well. The makeup is too natural and she just looks really really bare. A bracelet or something would've made the world's difference.
  • Sandra Bullock (Jenny Packham): Yes, Sandra's been through some terrible things this year, but that's not an excuse. Her bangs are really emo, as my boyfriend perfectly stated. This dress reminds me of a former ice skater in a retirement home. It's too old and too sparkly for being too old. Maybe she ran out of fuel after her frequent hits last year?
  • Halle Berry (Nina Ricci): This whole long sheer look is really starting to get on my nerves. Halle Berry is extremely sexy,  there's no need to look like a street walker.  That's all I need to say, I believe.
  • Jennifer Lopez (Zuhair Murad): Take off the cape, J.LO, you just look silly! And the makeup was TOO MUCH! And I thought you were going to be a fashionista...
  • Scarlet Johansson (Elie Saab): I think I screamed when I saw this look. Seriously, it was scary. I hated the kimono sleeves and that hair?! EW!! It was just scary. I feel for her break up with Ryan  Reynolds, but once again, no excuse. She just looks so old, which I find bothersome. She is easily one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood.  She needs to dress for her age and someone needs to stop teasing her hair.
  • Heidi Klum (Marc Jaccobs): Trust me, I love 70's inspired dresses, but this was not chic. In fact, I really despised this. It takes a lot for a supermodel to look ugly. Congratulations Heidi, you achieved the impossible. If her hair was longer and if the dress wasn't so ugly, this look would be unbelievable. But the hair is so awkward and the dress...ooof ....it looks like it got caught is some kind of laundry disaster. I just don't understand, nobody on Project Runway couldn't do better? Really?
  • Tilda Swinton (something boring): I really despise Tilda Swinton and her minimalist ways. I'm upset.
THE BEST
  • Olivia Wilde (Marchesa): She is such a superstar. I'm obsessed with this. Although shimmer full skirted dresses have been a bit overdone lately (let's think the majority of Rachel Zoe's clients), Wilde made it new with her super straight hair and bob. She made such a beautiful dress look edgy and rockish. Also, have you seen her shoes? SO COOL! I love how she always mixes it up and always looks fierce.
  • Mark Salling (Simon Spurr): Those aviators, that fo-hawk...I'm in love. He could probably wear anything and, with those accessories, still look undeniably sexy and chic. That's all I need to say about this.
  • Jayma Mays (Alberta Ferretti): She looks sooooo sleek in this Ferretti outfit. I love the drastic neckline and back; the sheer netting makes it looks extremely awesome. The black is so striking with her red hair. Usually with black dresses, it's hard to see the detail in pictures. But the details in this dress are not only visible, but extremely striking. She nailed this.
  • Amber Riley (Oliver Tolentino): A completely sparkled dress can be difficult for anyone to rock, especially people who aren't a size 00. Riley, however, looks absolutely incredible. I love how she's embracing her curves; this lady has an amazing voice and she's so adorable!
  • Diana Agron (J.Mendel): She looks like an old school movie star. Incredible. Surprisingly, this color does not wash her out; instead, she looks so timeless. Even though her makeup was light, that did not wash her out either. I don't know, she seems to have a knack for not getting washed out! All in all, she looks heavenly!
  • Jake Gyllenhaal (Burberry): I love a good juxtaposition. Jake's scruff with his cleaned up Burberry is definitely one of my favorites. How can you not love Jake?!  And I love a good bow tie! So Jake and a bow tie is priceless.
  • Lea Michele (Oscar de la Renta): Her personality kind of bothers me, but she really looks flawless. This outfit is perfectly put together. The messy up-do works so well with the ruffled de la Renta dress. And the pink color is so fabulous! I don't think she's ever done something girly before, but I'm loving this. That green cocktail ring is such a great finishing touch. I love love love this!
  • Leighton Meester (Zac Posen): People may think she looks like an old lady in this Posen dress, but I love it! Her makeup and hair is so fresh and youthful. Also, the silt gives the look some va va vroom!
  • Catherine Zeta Jones (Monique Lhuillier): A vision. This emerald looked amazing with her complexion and the silhouette was so age appropriate and beautiful. Is it upsetting I knew this was a Monique Lhuillier dress when I saw it?  Her slicked back hair and dainty jewels went perfectly with this look. Obsessed.
  • Mila Kunis (Vera Wang): Once again, emerald is a fabulous color right now. I love the ruching and tiny details of this dress. What I love about this dress is how she really made this dress youthful. The one shoulder and volumized hair really made this chic edgy and chic, which works perfectly for Mila!
  • Tina Fey (L'Wren Scott): A for Effort! Fey has come a long way from her days of simple black dresses. I thought the velvet was interesting and navy?! She's really growing!  It was age appropriate but something new, which I really appreciated.
  • Megan Fox (Armani Prive): I didn't recognize Megan Fox when I first saw her; she didn't look like a sex symbol, but a movie star. It was so girly, which I loved on Fox: the hair, the dress, the shoes. I loved how the shoes picked up on the sparkle in the Prive dress. And the sparkle on the Prive dress worked well with her metallic clutch. This look wasn't too matchy matchy, but it all worked and made sense. It was so classy, Megan Fox should definitely try this look more often!
AND NOW FOR THE TWO DRESSES THAT CHANGED MY LIFE.

Photo Cred
This is the most perfect look ever. She wears a lot of Armani Prive, but this is her finest by far. It is so flattering and unique, even though a lot of people rocked the long look. The sparkles were fabulous and the back...to die for. Also, I love how she wore her hair down; she doesn't do it that much, but the look would've look too restricted otherwise. Can I please steal this dress?!

Photo Cred
This Versace dress has a really similar silhouette to Anne's dress, but Angelina is rocking the emerald green, which is so in right now. She always looks so minimalist and boring, frequently wearing blacks and nudes. My jaw legitimately dropped when I saw this. She looked so bright and looked...like a human. Her hair was cascading and the back was great.  I was so happy to see this dress! SO GOOD

Alright, this blog post is too long.

Let's Talk About the AMA's

This has been SO OVERDUE, with the holidays and colleging, but at last I have my own compilation of the Best and Worst dressed of the 2010 American Music Awards. I'm so pleased that my boy, Michael Buble, won buut Beiber as 'Entertainer of the Year'....oooooof!!   Overall, the looks were just alright. I mean...some people pushed the envelope, but I was smitten with it.  So here it is, for your viewing pleasure!

Here's a little something for enjoyment!

Katy Perry should lip sync.

THE WORST:

  • Taylor  Swift: While I appreciate Taylor's effort to turn into a mature and sophisticated individual, this was a painfully basic outfit. To me, she's not evolving as herself but a different person: I am really not a fan of her new haircut; it's so weird and let's be honest,  her curls make her. whole look. And this dress is too simple for a transformation. She totally needs to spice it up! She'll get it one day!
  • Ke$ha: What...is...this? I can barely even function a decent response. THIS IS HANEOUS?!  There is literally nothing about this outfit that is the least bit chic. The mohawk,  the makeup, the pleather-ish fabric and disgusting fringe?! UGHH SO GROSS I CANOT EVEN DEAL. I respect her individuality but DSUIDAISDH SO TERRIFYING!
  • Nicki Minaj: Is this a new Avatar critter? I'm confused. Conceptually, the print and colors are interesting, but I really don't like the plethora of three dimensional objects. And I really do not like this whole two toned deal...pick one and stick with it!!  But I will give her this, she looks incredibly put together, even though I don't like her look.
  • Julianne Hough: You know how I feel about lace and femininity, I love it, but I'm not diggin' this.  To me, this took much Victoria Secret catalog than fashion. Also, that bag is a little too She wears it well, with her old glam Hollywood,  for sure, but I believe it's rather trashy.
  • Natasha Beddingfield: FOR REAL? This is something I'd wear to a nice dining event! This is what I'm not liking about this Red Carpet, half of these looks are too crazy and the other half is way too plain. She looks lovely but waaay too casual.
THE BEST:
  • Miley Cyrus: Shocker, I know, but I really like this short dress with a long train. It's probably because she's wearing Marchesa!  The color looked so great with her coloring. Her accessories were pretty simplistic, which complemented the long train extremely well. Overall, this look was so young and fresh, but still really chic. Great look, Miley!
  • Kelly Osbourne: I'm so smitten with Kelly's awesome fashion transformation; she looks so clean, chic, and gorgeous.  This LBD suits her perfectly. The silhouette, lace details, and knee-length hem was stunning and so flattering on her newly trim figure. I'm glad she remained classy with this look, pairing the dress off with a black platform pump. It is so pin-up esque and I'm obsessed.
  • Heidi Klum: For some reason, unbeknownst to me, I love this version of a long laced dress. I think having the whole dress lace makes it so much more interesting and chic. That hint of red on the belt makes it a little more interesting and eliminates an "old lady vibe". The sleek updo and dangles are the perfect way to complete this haute look!
  • Jenny McCarthy: This one shouldered number look so awesome on her. The electric blue is so refreshing and looks great with her blonde hair and blue eyes! What I like best about this look is how polished it is: her her is slicked back, minimal jewels, and black pumps. No muss, no fuss!!
  • Stana Katic: Va-va-voooom! She looks so sexy and chic, its' incredible!  Long sleeved minis are my favorites and a sparkled one makes it EVEN BETTER! I'm glad she didn't overdue the sparkles, with bedazzling accessories. Although I would've liked a sleek ponytail on Stana, her voluptuous waves looked so fabulous. And the gunmetal pumps was the perfect finishing touch!

The VMA's

Sometimes, I find it odd that MTV still has their annual VMA ceremony: all MTV shows anymore is Jersey Shore, The City, and Teen Mom. What do those three have in common? A lack of MUSIC OR MUSIC VIDEOS. Remember TRL?  Regardless, what I saw of the show was decent. I was not a fan of TayTay's strike back to Kanye (it's been a year, be classy about it) or Rihanna's new hair, but watching the ever so original Gaga is always exciting. So now it's come down to this, the best and worst dressing of the 2010 VMAs: enjoy!

THE WORST:

  • Gaga ( The Meat Dress): I'm all for originality, but this was a little too far for me. MEAT? Umm...no thank you. It was just odd.  I know she loves causing controversy and creating a statement but even me, a devoted meat fan, was taken back by this. It didn't even have a nice silhouette!
  • Jane Lynch: EWWWWWWW I HATE THIS SO MUCH. It's like Sue Sylvester got fancy. I hated this too much. It's so ugly and I know she's no fashion icon but she could've opted for a shorter jacket. She looks like a  character from The Matrix. The absolute worst.
  • Ke$ha: Trash bags r us. Okay, I get that her whole thing is to be a hot mess but this is just too much. Trash bags and fur? It seriously looks like she a killed raccoon.
  • Snooki: Why are you famous? This is gross. SHE'S GROSS. I'm having absolutely none of this. The shoes are alright but this dress?! What the hell?  The pattern is gross and all of these peek-a-bo things?! UGH-LY
THE BEST:
  • Selena Gomez: Perfection. She looks absolutely ravishing! The silver gown is absolutely GORGEOUS with her complexion. The blue bead-work at the bodice gives this dress the perfect amount of excitement. The pony tail also makes this dress more relaxed. I wish her shoe was more interesting (a red sole maybe) but she still looks STUNNING.
  • Ashley Greene: The black and white mini is absolutely AMAZING. She accessorized it with black and white but, for some reason, it's not boring. I love everything that Ashley wears, especially this one!
  • Emma Stone: A+ work. This look is quite minimalist, which I usually hate, but I love this. It's so event perfect and she looks like rockstar in the sexy Pucci number. The purple clutch is the perfect accessory and the different textures makes the outfit more interesting.

THE EMMY AWARDS!

I love the Emmys because, well, I love TV. But unfortunately I couldn't watch it. Apparently, Kim Kardashian sang and Modern Family (and my favorite Modern Family actor) won BIIIIIG TIME. And go Jane Lynch, she completely deserved that Emmy. But of course, I'm into the fashion aspect of award shows. E!'s Fashion Police is on tonight and I can't wait to watch that when I get home. In short, I thought the Emmys had a great array of great, bad, and boring. I mean...nobody really wants the boring or bad but the good was pretty damn great.  I was just much more excited for the Oscars and Globes! But for now, here's my BEST and WORST dressed list.

THE WORST:

  • Tina Fey (Oscar de la Renta): I admire Tina's attempt to think outside of the box, which has been lacking in her so much before,  but I didn't like this. No offense to Mr. de la Renta, but I'm not a fan of this tribal pattern, especially on her. It's a little to red velvet for someone who dresses vanilla.  She looks gorgeous, but definitely not my favorite.
  • Christina Hendricks (Zac Posen): TOO MUCH FEATHERS. I love my share of feathers put these just made her look foolish. It was definitely form fitting, but it was too costume-ish. It'd be so much better if the feathers weren't by her armpits. I'm really hating this.
  • Toni Collette (Valentino): A forest-ish bottom is never good on a formal dress. I hated the tie on her waist and I hated that tie-dye shit on the bottom of the skirt. It wasn't chic, it was just odd.
  • Nancy Juvonen (MaxMara): This dress, if anything, was probably less flattering on her that a more fitted design. And the color was too much of summer. Among all of the things that mark a new fashion season, the Emmys is one of these prominent events. We need to say goodbye to corals and explore the wonderful world of jewel tones.
  • Emily Deschanel (MaxAzria Atelier): I love beautiful purple jewel tone and I love a decent amount of  frills, but this was all just waaay too much for me to handle! I like the tiering on the bodice, but after the bodice ends, there should be something new. Otherwise, she looks like granny's curtains or really hippy (and NOT in the good way).  Also, her accessories weren't that phenomenal with the dress. She's a beautiful woman, but I wish she picked a better dress.
  • Jenna Fischer (Valentino): If it weren't for the CORAL color, I would have put this in my "blah category": it's quite blah and I think a sexy silhouette would be so much better on her, perhaps even some one shouldered action!  BUT THE STUPID COLOR. What about a nice sapphire or emerald green? Or ruby?! That's close to ugly coral! Some people...
  • Padma Lakshmi (Carolina Herrera): HATED. The dress itself, sorry Ms. Herrera, would only be mediocre, but that stupid necklace made her look so disheveled.  It didn't even match with the dress, that's so random. THIS IS THE EMMYS, NOT A KE$HA CONCERT. Ugly. Ugly. UUUUUUGHHHLY.
  • Kristen Wig (in no-name): Oh my god. What the hell is this. The feathers on the top. The awkward array of polka dots. This isn't funny. WHAT'S UP WITH THIS FEATHERS TREND?! HATE IT!  This just isn't classy. Maybe this would fly at the Grammys but definitely NOT the Emmys.
  • Archie Panjabi: Things I hate: brown dresses, awkward draping, and off the shoulder sleeves. Separate? Bearable and sometimes chic. Together? Ew. I don't know who Panjabi is but she has a cute figure, so I think a fitted dress would be lovely on her. maybe in a jewel tone (I love jewel tones).
  • Amy Poehler (Max Azria): Plain Jane McGee. Seriously, can't she put on some jewels or maybe a dress where the chest was flattering/fit her properly. SHEESH
  • Sarah Hyland (Pamella Roland): I hate this cheesy fabric: sweet sixteen gone wrong. It was a little too hucchi, I personally think a mini with a sweet-heart neckline would've been so much better. But she's learning so we can hope for better next year!
THE BEST
  • Claire Danes (Armani Prive): I love sparkle and this silhouette. She looks awesome. It definitely reminds me of this Prive dress Anne Hathaway wore, but I guess that's Armani for you. She wore like...no accessories, but for some reason that looked. She looked so clean and refreshing.
  • January Jones (Versace): Some people may not like this Versace but I love it: the color is so electric, even though I had a problem with coral because it was so summer-ish. The scalloped detail was so incredible all over, and it was quite flattering. I LOVE IT.
  • Anna Paquin (Alexander McQueen):STUNNING. The gold on the bodice was so McQueen's last  collection. I love the longer train in the back. So innovative. So now. And who doesn't love a good black and gold?!
  • Elizabeth Moss (Donna Karan): I'm not a fan of the off-white color but this dress is absolutely gorgeous!! I love the draping as well as the detail on the asymmetrical shoulder. The train is gorgeous! I kind of wished she had more vibrant jewels, but she still looks divine!
  • Kelly Osbourne (Tony Ward): Say what you will about her, but nobody can deny how awesome she looks here. The black was so slimming and the neckline looked amazing on her!! The skirt also has an interesting design, which I'm really loving as well!
  • Rose Byrne (Gucci): This gown is so innovative, structurally. I love the metallic gold accents and the cut in the bodice. It's so future Grecian goddess. The simple accessories also worked pretty well with this dress.
  • Lea Michele (Oscar de la Renta): She looked like such a superstar!! It was so flattering and the navy and black combination was so unique. The best part about this outfit is how well she balanced it: she mixed a heavy and detailed skirt with a spectacular necklace. With this combo, she looked fully clothes but the amazing dress didn't look too overwhelming.
  • Heidi Klum (Marchesa): She would. Seriously, if anyone can wear a mini to the Emmy Awards, it's Heidi...OBVI. I'm glad she didn't go for a tight fitting plain mini: it had volume and was vivacious. And, in true Klum fashion, is mixed with offbeat jewels that work seemingly well with her outfit. Project Runway: Complete.
  • Eva Parker Longoria (Robert Rodriguez): To the un-trained eye- not like I'm trained but I like detail- this dress would be a simple black gown. Which would be boring. But would Eva ever do that? Nah. THE DETAIL IS INCREDIBLE. The structured bodice is so fitting and the rosette-ed skirt is to DIE FOR. The pink earrings also lightened up this darker look and made it feminine and fun!
  • Dianna Argon (Carolina Herrera): If someone were to say this dress was not gorgeous, they'd be lying: it's such a work of art and Dianna Argon is the perfect person to wear it. Like her, this dress is so soft and delicate looking. It is so flattering, especially with the black bowed belt. She accessorized with demure jewels, which I thought was completely right on.
  • Jayma Mays (Burberry): The navy  dress with gold jewels looked stunning with her red hair. I'm really glad she wore something a little bit adventurous, like a fitted dress with a tulle bottom (no sarcasm, the tulle made it look interesting). I'm also glad she did a wavy and down hair-do to make it more casual and fun.

Red Carpet: A TWO FOR

Well this was a prominent week in the world of fashion: The MTV Movie Awards were this Sunday, stars strutting some chic fashions down the carpet. And as we all know, or should know, yesterday was the 2010 CFDA (congratulations to all of the winners... you all rock). So obviously I have a bundle of best dressed/ worst dress shenanigans to do. But since it's TWO events, and I'm feeling quite optimistic, I have decided to only do the best dressed this time. I mean...who wants to look at a bunch of plain or disgusting outfits over and over and over again? not me. So enjoy, ladies and gents.

THE 2010 MTV MOVIE AWARDS

  • Jessica Biel: I loooooved this so much. It reminded me of this black, pink , and white Nanette Lepore dress (which i can not find a corresponding link) from four years ago but so much better. She looked gorgeous and I thought the dress (or skirt/blouse combo) was the perfect combination of classic and fun (the blouse and feathered skirt, respectively). It was like a trendy Audrey Hepburn!

  • Miranda Cosgrove: Although I am not her biggest fan, I thought she looked very pretty. The cut and hem line was age-appropriate but the crossing on the bodice gave it that extra spice it needed. Although some disagree with the color, I think it was perfect in a sea of blacks and metallics.

  • Christian Siriano: Why is this guy so cute? I don't believe the MTV Movie Awards should be taken as seriously as the Oscars so people should have fun, but look glamourous and classy. I think he nailed it: the black shirt with the white writing was funky, but the black suit gave it a sense of class.

  • Elizabeth Reaser: WHO DOESN'T LOVE A GOOD PLAYSUIT!?! I almost didn't see this one but THANKFULLY that changed. Although I typically dress feminine, I loved the strong sense of masculinity in this piece. It was sexy, sophisticated, PERFECT for this kind of award ceremony! I don't know who you are , Elizabeth Reaser, but I'm watching you!

  • Sandra Bullock: I don't really get people when they say they don't like Sandra Bullock: she's an amazing actress, a strong individual, and an up and coming fashionista. Despite her Johnny Weir appearance at the Oscars, I love seeing her fashion growth during the awards- and this one did NOT disappoint! I love sparkles and drama so this long sleeved mini with an incredible plunging back was AWESOME. And when Betty White makes a comment about your dress... you know it's worthwhile.

...they weren't as exciting as I hoped they would be...moving on!

THE 2010 CFDA

In my personal opinion, I thought the celebrities on the carpet really stole the spotlight.

  • Gwyneth Paltrow: Classic. I loved the simplicity of a long, black evening gown and the unexpected sparkles: the perfect combination. And when you have Michael Kors on your arm, everything is quite alright.

  • Liya Kebede: Eclectic, off-beat, but very chic. I loved the combination of the two metallics ( it seems to be making a come-back). The quirky hemlines and bodice pushed the envelope, but it was absolutely delightful!

  • Whitney Port: I'll admit, I am a major fan of The City. I like Whitney Port and the clothes she generally wears (and Olivia Palermo...even though she's kind of rude). I LOVED THIS DRESS. A major concept of Whitney's whole persona is to be sophisticated and youthful; she absolutely nailed it.I loved the silhouette combined with the silver shimmer.
  • Alexis Bledel:I've never really thought of her as a fashionista but I think this dress gave the perfect blend of edgy and classy. The one shoulder and glimmered fabric was daring, but the mini-dress hem line was quite expected. I just loved it.
  • Rachel Zoe: In the words of Zoe, this was "BAH-NAN-AHS". She looked absolutely incredible. I loved that deep saphire, the plunging neckline, and the high cut. I LOVED IT I LOVED IT. I'm a sucker for long sleeves and I loved the vintage vibe of this dress. Everyone else's outfits were innovative and new, but this one genuinely seems timeless to me!
