Back to Black: 5 Looks That Slayed on the Golden Globes Read Carpet

Funerals, goths and the handy, albeit risk-adverse, LBD — let's face it: Nowadays, dressing in head-to-toe black is either a sign of mourning or deemed dull.

But according to the 2018 Golden Globes red carpet, a noir ensemble can exude strength, solidarity and courage — all while looking indisputably chic. Last night, the vast majority of attendees donned the dark hue to support Time's Up, an initiative led by Hollywood A-Listers to bring forth change for women everywhere. And let's just say it's about time.

From bringing fellow sisters and activists as dates to Oprah's borderline presidential speech, the night offered a glimmer of hope in the wake of the horrid and inexcusable string of sexual assault allegations.

And sartorially speaking, the night did not disappoint. Feather, sparkle, tea-length hemlines and one fabulous turban looks proved black is far from boring. Below, the five best looks of the night.

Tracee Ellis Ross in Marc Jacobs

When it comes to fashion, Tracee Ellis Ross has a "go big or go home" mentality — and last night's lewk did not disappoint. The Black-ish star is one of the very few red carpet darlings who dresses for herself instead of the masses. To the untrained eye, the turban is considered outré, but the fashion set is giving it a standing ovation. And just because the blackout honored a very important and serious issue didn't mean she couldn't have fun with her ensemble. Ellis Ross' bright red lip and dainty drop earrings add drama without taking the attention away from that iconic turban.

Kerry Washington in Prabal Gurung

Does it get any better than Kerry Washington? From head-to-toe, Washington's look screams "good girl revolts." Speaking of toes, let's talk about the shoes. Sandals and pumps are oftentimes the shoe of choice for attendees, the sheer, embellished booties are so cool and covetable, you can't help but want a pair yourself. And when paired with her wavy hair and slitted Prabal Gurung dress, they're equal parts feminine and fashion-forward.

Dakota Johnson in Gucci

Simple in the front, yet glitzy in the back, Dakota Johnson's gown is something of a fashion mullet. But what do you expect when the designer behind the masterpiece is Alessandro Michele, maximalist creative director of Gucci? The messy ponytail and natural makeup are the perfect cool girl counters to the dramatic train. Brava!

Alison Brie in Vassilis Zoulias

Women wore the pants during last night's ceremony— literally and figuratively. Take Alison Brie, who stunned in a half-dress, half-pants look courtesy of Vassilis Zoulias. Not only is the ensemble spot-on for such a monumental night, the hint of pants offers a modern, refreshing take on the traditional ballgown. For an extra dose of glam, the plunging diamond necklace complements the deep sweetheart neckline.

Diane Kruger in Prada

Diane Kruger is one of those fashion plates who could make a burlap sack look chic, so it's no surprise she looks absolutely heavenly in this Prada number. Capes have been a Golden Globe mainstay since Lupita Nyong'o donned her now-iconic Ralph Lauren cape dress in 2014. Equal parts ethereal and feminine, Kruger's take looks like it came right out of a Slim Aarons' photo. As a bonus, the delicate beading is the glam we needed on this otherwise dark red carpet.

10 Best Looks from the 2015 Cannes Film Festival

As Cannes kindly reminds us every year, summer is way more glamorous than a pair of denim cutoffs, aviators and rubber flip flops. In fact, the fête du jour frowns up banished flats altogether. In true Cannes Film Festival manner, the red carpet looks did not disappoint. From formal showstoppers to casual--but equally chic--party and press outfits, check out the 10 best looks of the film (and fashion) extravaganza.

Diane Kruger in Prada: If any budding fashionista need guidance on having a personal style that is both feminine and edgy, look to Diane Kruger. Between utterly Parisian Chanel Haute Couture frocks to punchy Giambattista Valli prints, everything the German actress wears tickles the heart of all girly girls. This Prada gown is no exception. There's something insanely ethereal about the thougthful embellishments against a playfully sheer backdrop, and not to mention the dramatic back is undeniably regal. In true Kruger fashion, her subtly messy curls perfectly match the princessy vibe of this gown. But of course, leave it to the It-Girl to make even bedhead coveted.

Sophie Marceau in Alexander Vauthier: Far from the festival's riskiest look, the actress's fuss-free outfit offers a good lesson in easy summer dressing. Whether on red carpet or the boardwalk, a white shirtdress is the ultimate example of understated glamour. Yes, Marceau's take on this wardrobe staple is fancier than the top that also doubles as a cover-up, but the carefree sentiment is still strong. In general, the getup feels a little ho-hum; however, adding Chopard's snake necklace ups the sartorial ante. Polished off with a pair of gold gladiator sandals, Marceau looks more like an ultra chic Medusa (in a good way!) than an actress. Brava.

Cate Blanchett in Alexander McQueen: As any fashion girl (or guy) knows, the secret to sexy dressing is highlighting one body area and leaving much more to the imagination. This iteration is not as obvious as a plunging maxidress, but this Victorian alternative is undeniably sultry. Lesson to be learned: a sheer top and frills-free black bra does wonders, and isn't only appropriate for a night on the town. To prevent this look from getting too vampy, the Academy Award winner opts for smooth waves, a fresh face and minimal accessories.

Sienna Miller in Sonia Rykiel:  Once upon a time, the American Sniper star was known for two things: her rocky relationship with Jude Law and her perfectly boho style. Though Miller has made several movies since then, and seemingly ended her on-again-off-again relationship, who doesn't regularly nerd out over her style? Her clothes still have a hint of boho, but her overall style has received a major, sophisticated upgrade. There's something about this gothic look that almost veers into Stevie Nicks territory; however, the minimal jewels (besides that glitzy collar, of course) make this less costumey. Long story short: the drama of this ensemble is divine. Though the cape adds an air of mystery, the sheer skirt and starry embellishments keep this outfit fun and youthful. The juxtaposition between the beachy braids and classic deep red lip perfect this look.
Poppy Delevingne in Burberry Prorsum: A little psychedelic without veering too trippy, this dress is the ideal option for any creative style savant. In a sea of neutrals, metallics and jewel tones, this forest green adds an undeniably refreshing jolt of color to the red carpet. And the whimsical embellishments contribute an unapologetically youthful energy that is rarely found at Cannes. On the accessories front, the tiered necklace emphasizes the deep neckline, making this look more fashion girl than party girl. Finished with a smokey eye and slightly messy updo (with the ubiquitous fashion girl middle part)? A sartorial homerun.

Emma Stone in Christian Dior Couture: Not to sound overdramatic, but this dress is everything. Simply put, you can wear this dress everywhere: a wedding, red carpet, gala, prom, lounging around on a Sunday morning just because you want to feel a little fancy. The options are essentially limitless. While the soft white and swishy train can come across as strictly bridal, Stone gives this look a youthful twist by adding a subtle choker. Mixed with the boat neckline, the necklace provides a cool, 90s flair. The actress's neat updo keeps this look sophisticated while her subtle lip offers a pop of color.

Naomi Watts in Armani Privé: Goodbye, basic column dresses and extravagant trains; hello, thick ruffles. Though tiers are usually associated with the likes of flamenco dancers, it feels refreshing on The Sea of Trees actress. And flattering! Compact ruffles have the nasty reputation of adding unnecessary bulk; however, the elongated layers create a subtle hourglass figure. Thanks to the ice blue hue, this dress is dramatic enough without wearing Watts. The frock's black embroidery perfectly matches her thin black strappy sandals. To complete the look, Watts adds dangling earrings and a fresh face.

Natasha Poly in Chanel: It's very rare that a set of sleeves make an outfit but do not create a paparazzi-attracting spectacle.  Paired with a flowy silhouette, this dress is the perfect thing to wear on a cool summer evening. With the help of fetching accessories as well as a gifted hair and makeup crew, Poly's ensemble cries old Hollywood glamour more than mumsy. The T-Strap heels and chained bags are sweet, while the deep lip and exaggerated side part add the right amount glamour. Not to mention the crimson lip compliment the frock's navy hue.

Fan Bingbing in Ralph & Russo Couture: Stateside, Chinese actress Fan Bingbing is known more for her extravagant sartorial choices than her bustling filmography. Especially at high-profiled events, she sports dresses that are classic with a hint of fantastical. The floral fripperies on this gown are part old money feminine, part ethereally whimsical. While a petal power frock with a trumpeted skirt can feel a little matronly, the dramatic train and funky geometric clutch offer a hip twist. Paired with matching dangling earrings, a chunky bracelet and rings, this look is glamorous, feminine, daring and dramatic all at once.  Now that's a strong red carpet look.

Kendall Jenner in Alaia: Rest assured, style rookies: attending an A-List red carpet and embracing youthful, forward-thinking style are not mutually exclusive. Case in point? Kendall Jenner. Whether rocking a crop top, thigh-grazing hemline or an up-to-there slit, the model, muse (and Kimye relative) never fails to remind us that she's only 19 years-old. But there's something commendable about her fashion choices, especially this Alaia number. Though it's easy to forget, fashion is all about having fun. After seeing photos of Jenner swishing her full, bohemian skirt, it looks like that's exactly what she was doing. While the silhouette and texture looks like something one would wear after spending hours on the beach, the layers of Chopard gems and bright red lip make this getup completely Cannes-worthy.

Fall 2014 Trend: Swinging Sixties

Even in an industry that's fixated on the next new thing, fashion's finest frequently look to the past for inspiration. If the fall shows were any inclination, we have plunged head-first into a sixties revival.

Though each brand has their unique way of defining the sixties, clean silhouettes and standout accessories were the underlying links for this marcotrend. At Gucci, Frida Giannini paired tailored jackets in baby hues with tinted sunglasses and knee-high python boots. Giannini's daytime-approved looks were perfectly balanced with several embellished minis that any aspiring factory girl would wear. On the subject of sparkle, Miu Miu's collection of metal appliqué on streamlined silhouettes, which were occasionally layered underneath plastic coats, would make even the strictest minimalist envision herself at one of Austin Powers's parties. And who could forget Hedi Slimane's array of sequined semi-shift dresses and shimmery boots at Saint Laurent? A major fashion month moment. But rest assured, style savants: this sixties revival isn't synonymous with sparkle. Valentino's fall line offered capes in versatile neutrals, mod patchwork prints and collared dresses in poppy pigments. However, it was Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli's use of op-art polka dots that made this collection sing.

But perhaps that biggest sixties moment was none other than Nicolas Ghesquière's debut at Louis Vuitton. A far cry from Marc Jacobs's frills-filled parting collection, Ghesquière's take on this trend is more subdued than fall's alternatives. Sleek jackets, a-line skirts and feminine dresses are mixed with leathers, funky pattern combinations, and tough Chelsea boots. Whether you're craving to be Vuitton cool or opting for opulence, this sixties resurgence covers all points on the sartorial spectrum.

Gucci Look 5
Miu Miu Look 39
Saint Laurent Look 35
Valentino Look 3

Louis Vuitton 23
While a full look may be too reminiscent of Valley of the Dolls to be a jumping off point for this trend, sixties-inspired separates are undeniably wearable. An a-line skirt would be very au courant with a shearling-lined moto jacket, while a usually retro neck-tie blouse can look extremely Parisian with a fitted trouser and modest heel. Or channel your inner Edie Sedgwick with an unapologetically fierce (faux) fur jacket. But if you have a penchant for accessories, there are loads of retro shoes and purses to mesh into your 2014-approved wardrobe. While an up-to-there boot perfectly encapsulates mod squad style, a sleek Chelsea boot or ladylike stacked pump are equally appropriate (and chic) alternatives. And when it comes to bags, boxier is better.  Compact, fuss-free and undeniably stylish, the boxy bag is the perfect way to infuse some swinging sixties into an otherwise current outfit.

Will you be welcoming a sixties revival this fall? Sound off below.

I Fancy: Shoes

It should come as no surprise that I love to shop. Scratch that, I'm obsessed. Between devouring my favorite glossies to my time in London, I've been suffocated with inspiration. Consequently, the need to shop and style has become borderline unbearable. But why just keep my fashion fantasies between me and my wallet? Enter my latest blog series, "I Fancy." Check out what I'm craving each week.

As impressive as Big Ben and Kensington Palace are, I can't help but look down... at the local's shoes, obviously. The fearlessness that London's chic elite embrace every single day as they plan their ensembles is inspiring, especially when it comes to their choice of shoes. Gone are the days when simple ballet flats will do. Now, it's all about being an individual, head to toe.

I Fancy: Shoes

Nicholas Kirkwood platform heels / rag & bone lace up wedge boots, $320 / rag & bone leather shoes / Prada shoes, $620 / Frye / Loeffler Randall / Dr. Martens flat boots, $195 / River Island studded shoes, $48 / AX Paris flat boots, $47

1. Lace-Up Espadrilles: Who needs a pop of color when this funky print offers a similar sartorial punch? Though espadrilles usually scream summer, I couldn't gush about these shoes soon enough. Casual and stylish, these kicks are the ideal transition piece.
2. Doc Martens: Rest assured, these shoes can be chic. Whether paired with skinnies and a cozy beanie or juxtaposed with an ethereal lace dress, Doc Martens are surprisingly versatile. In a versatile color, of course-- bright pink Docs are obviously a "stand out" piece.
3. A Serious Heel: I really mean a serious heel. The daring height plus the juvenile Mary Jane silhouette is genius. Whether you pair them with a classic LBD or rock the nerdy look with a pair of ruffled socks, these shoes are sure to be a hit.
4. Penny Loafers: The middle-aged woman in me is so in love with this anti-trend. Though these shoes are probably as retro as your grandmother's plastic couch, spice them up with a cutting-edge look and allow them to act as a versatile staple.
5. Wedge Booties: Even stiletto-stomping trendsetters have to admit that wedges are the best way to score some much-needed height. Can we say comfortable?  I'm absolutely obsessed with this woodsy approach to the widely popular shape. It's very "Katniss Everdeen hits the catwalk." So smitten.
6. Low Chelsea Boot: Can it get more British than this? the length suggests edgy while the sleek silhouette screams minimalism. Amazing. Plus, these kicks are the perfect going out shoe if you don't want the achy arches in the morning.
7. Desert Boot: Forgo your cowgirl boots and put your best foot forward with the hottest western-inspired shoe. While this may not be your funkiest pair of kicks, they offer the perfect dose of effortless chic.
8. Fun Smoking Loafers: If I had to pick two male style icons to emulate, I'd have to say Liberace (naturally) and Chuck Bass. These masculine loafers? Totally Chuck Bass. The sleek silhouette paired with the canary yellow and braided detailing offers a really cool take on a classic shoe. Basic enough to complete a zany look and crazy enough to be the standout accessory? I'll take a pair!
9. Traditional Slingbacks: Crazy kicks are all the rage; however, it's imperative to go back to the basics every now and then. Unlike my other picks, these offer a sophisticated twist to any ensemble. And deep down, doesn't everyone want to channel their inner Audrey Hepburn? Exactly.

Style Guide: Baby It's Cold Outside

Call me an eager beaver, but I'm already listening to Christmas music- U2's remedition of "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" is quite spectacular! For some, this festive season does have it's drawbacks. For example, it gets cold. Very cold. I'm all for comfy clothes; however,  the weather be an excuse for sporting some horrific threads. If you truly must sport a pair of leggings this holiday season, please "wow" onlookers with some amazing outerwear? Since I've taken the time to give you a style guide for winter accessories, you really have no excuse.

When in doubt, stick with neutrals: Though I'm such a sucker for the rampant collection of cherry reds and emerald greens that bombard the freshly-plowed streets, set yourself apart from the rest and wear subdued hues. Trust me, you'll look super chic. If you really feel the need to add a splash of color, add a deep lip or a colorful hat.

Texture, texture, texture: If you haven't noticed yet, winter is all about texture. Whether you sport a faux-fur jacket (in a neutral, of course) or some intricate gloves, a textured piece will add depth to your ensemble. Plus, it can be a great conversation starter.

Don't neglect your socks: Gone are the days of rocking a pair of flats without the risk of frostbite. Though you may have to tug on your trusty boots, remember that your socks should be sartorially superior as well. Eventually, you will have to take off your shoes and nothing's more of a buzz-kill than standard white socks.  My top picks? Madewell, J.Crew and Topshop.
Style Guide: Baby It's Cold Outside

Mauro Grifoni jacket, $960 / Madewell slouchy socks / sunghee bang / Barneys New York long cashmere glove / Ted Baker / Leather glove / Madewell / Beret hat / Pom beanie / Lancôme

What will you be wearing this chilly season? Buddle up, my loves!

The Candian Tux

It's no secret that I've been obsessed with the denim-on-denim trend lately. Just yesterday, I paired this trend with a gingham shirt to create what I like to call, "Canadian Farmer." Though this trend definitely has mixed reactions among the chic elite, I'm here to give you my style rules for sporting a rampant array of denim.

  1. Be fearless:. Seriously. This trend is simply not for you if you don't like to stand out. Sure, some people give you weird looks; however, I doubt they're as cool  as you.
  2. Mix up your denim colors: From colored jeans to your trusty black skinnies, there are so many different types of denim. The key to rocking this trend numerous times is  to mix a bevy of different pieces together. You can pair your jean jacket and black skinnies together one day and your chambray and orange skinnies the next. It's the same trend, but two completely different looks.
  3. Break up monochromatic denim with a different fabric: As much as I love the trend, you should never pay homage to Britney and Justin's major denim faux pas. But what are you supposed to do if you find yourself wearing the same colored denim in one ensemble? Cry yourself to sleep? Absolutely not! Instead, add a soft sweater underneath your jean top. Crisis averted, ladies and gent.
  4. Invest in thought-provoking silhouettes: If your'e really smitten with this trend, expand your closet! Pick up a denim playsuit or a denim dress with amazing cutouts (see below, please).
  5. Finish your ensemble with stellar accessories: As with any outfit, your denim-on-denim ensemble needs some statement pieces. Incorporating spikes and skull accessories is the perfect way to toughen up your outfit. If you don't want to add a stack of bracelets or an awesome scarf, please add a colorful lip. Otherwise, you won't look stylish-- you'll just look confused.

Style Guide: New York Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week Style Guide

Oasis maxi dress, $88 / Boyfriend blazer / Kitten heels / American Apparel vintage sunglasses / NARS Cosmetics red lip stick / Smythson Mara Croc-Stamped Small Manuscript Book

It's the most wonderful time of the year, my friends: New York Fashion Week. The city stops for a week to take in the innovative designs that strut down the runway. Heaven on Earth? I think so!  I'm so excited to be heading to NYFW tomorrow and thought I'd share some style ideas for the treasured event. This season, I'm going for "understated glam". What exactly does that mean? You'll find out soon enough! To copy this look, sport crisp silhouettes in dark hues. Let the record show that "darker hues" doesn't mean black and only black. For example, that bordeaux shirtdress is fantastic. Once you have the clean base down, make the outfit your own with some awesome accessories: fun shoes, stacked bracelets, or even a punchy pout. But do me a favor and don't forget to document the show: bring your camera, iPhone, and super chic notebook!

Happy Fashion Games everyone, may the odds be ever in your favor.

Summer Lovin'

Believe it or not, summer's not over just yet. Before you pull out your cardigans and amazing booties, do me (and yourself) a favor -- embrace the last few days of this season!  I know what you're thinking: dressing for the summer is so draining. Recharge your fashion batteries and check out my top end-of-summer picks for that necessary dose of summer style-spiration.
Summer Lovin'

Edun silk dress / Miu Miu bikini swimwear / J.Crew bikini swimsuit / Cole Haan shoes / Salvatore Ferragamo silk scarve / Karen Walker Eyewear sunglasses / Sun hat / NARS Cosmetics lip stick / Ikat Beach Towel

In my opinion, summer is all about rocking unapologetically feminine pieces. From pastel bikinis with girly fripperies to soft, whimsical patterns, the options are endless! With a slew of towels, sunnies, and "out-of-this-world" silk scarves to choose from, don't forget to accessorize!  But what if you're a risk-taker and need a splash of edge? I hear you, style mavens. Juxtapose your ladylike attire with minimalist sandals or a punchy red lip. Now that you have the look down, it's time to bask in the sun!

KarTRASHian

For those who know me, this post's title may come as a bit of a shock. I love the Kardashians (you shouldn't be that surprised to hear I'm watching Keep Up With the Kardashians as I write this). From their low-class reality show to their empire of boutiques, products, and social events, I think the Kardashians are insane geniuses. Even that four hour wedding special had me watching and rooting for Kim and man- Kris. In my mind, the Kardashians can do no wrong. They're successful! They're entertaining! They're funny! They're fashionable! Little did I know, I would have to rethink the latter.  Now you must be wondering what happened. Cannes happened.

(Photo Cred)
Sure, there have been a lot of crazy outfits at this year's Cannes, but this one is officially my least favorite. Ever. So why didn't I just include this bad boy in my Cannes roundup? This ensemble was so painful, it needed my undivided attention. I must admit, her hair and makeup is stellar. Sexy and clean at the same time. Scratch that- I like her makeup. I'm such a sucker for the smokey eye and nude lip combination. That hair, on the other hand, needs to go. A slick ponytail would've been perfect, not this greasy mess!  And that awkward slicked back do is horrendous with the Balmain. Speaking of Balmain, as much as I love Olivier Rousteing and everything he does, this gilded mini just does not work with Kim. She's too boobalicious and curvy for this silhouette and deep v. Especially for Cannes! This is a classy event- not the MTV movie awards. On a side note, why  is Kanye even wearing jeans? THIS IS CANNES! HE'S AT CANNES FOR HIS MOVIE.  For such a glam-obsessed "couple," I'm majorly disappointed.  In a world of red carpet glam, does this really suffice? No.

As if this ensemble couldn't get any worse, Kim decides to put on those Giuseppe Zanotti booties. Not only are they an uncomfortable height, but why would you ever pair those with a mini?  She looks like a second-rate street walker. I hate it. This weekend, I decided to re-watch the first season of Keeping Up With the Kardashians and Kim claimed she was a stylist in one episode. I scoffed as any fashion snob would.

To top off this fashion horror story, Kardashian did the unthinkable: repeated an outfit. Sure, she didn't wear the same thing twice, but she stole Gwyneth's show-stopping Pucci from the 2011 Emmys, which is worse.

(Photo Cred)
Though this happens all the time in Hollywood, Fashion Police wouldn't have a weekly "Bitch Stole My Look" segment if there wasn't, this is terrible. How could you copy a look as infamous as Gwyneth's? So wrong. Especially since the same dress is showcased at two very prominent red carpet events: the Emmys and Cannes. Plus, it's not even like Kim looks better. While er hourglass figure offers a different look, I hate those earrings. They are neither here nor there.

Kim has had some fashion successes since then; however, I really wonder if I'll ever forget this. As much as I hate to say it, I feel like Kim Kardashian is no longer relevant in the world of fashion. It's fine, I was always more of a Kourtney fan anywho.

Allow Me to Slip into Something More Comfortable

Can you believe that spring is finally here? It feels like just yesterday I was bundling up in a plethora of layers. There are so many awesome trends to try this season, so expect a lot of fashion photo shoots starring yours truly. A couple weeks ago, my mother and I dominated Newbury Street in Boston. As always, Urban Outfitters was the first stop. I snagged a bunch of pieces that I cannot wait to wear, including the pieces from the shoot. I'm trying something new this sunny season. Previously, spring always meant "funky bohemian." This time, I'm all about stunning silhouettes and pops of color. Since I'm inevitably urban, I decided to start this season off with a effortless, black dress.
I'm all about the asymmetrical hemline lately. The mullet train can be either dressed up or down. For this shoot, I took a mid-range approach by rocking super casual flat-forms.
Say what you will, but I'm obsessed with flat-forms. In my mind, these bad boys are the happy medium: the height and forwardness of heels and the comfort of flats. The floral print gives this ensemble that oh-so necessary burst of color. J'adore.

Aren't these sunnies absolutely everything? My mom got them for me as an Easter present and I've been head-over-heels in love with them ever since. The mod roundness works perfectly with the whimsy sunglass arms.

I love the slinkiness of this dress. It's so comfy and gives off a lingerie feeling without being too risque.

Who doesn't love stacking bracelets during the summer. I officially am double stacking- let's see how high I can go this summer!

This ensemble is simple enough that it can be recreated in so many ways. Not feeling the mullet hem? Rocking a maxi dress has a similar, glamorous effect. Not a dress kind of girl? Try an asymmetrical skirt! For an effortless look, nix the necklace and pile those bracelets and rings! As for the flat-forms, expect a flat-form post in the very near future.
