Fall 2014 Trend: Shear(ling) Madness

Though this summer was more tame than its heatwave-worthy predecessors, a notable shift from flouncy dresses to loads of layers is underway. And if last year's Polar Vortex is any indication of the season to come, we are in for a long, frigid winter. How will any style savant stay warm and au courant this season? Luckily, fall's biggest trends are (somewhat) blizzard friendly.

Welcome to the Fall 2014 trend guide. As always, each week highlights  a major trend for Fall/Winter 2014 and how you can get the look. So let's get started, shall we?

Admit it: the biggest trends are not always practical for the every day. However, some of the industry's hottest designers have given us just what we instinctively want for winter: a warm and cozy coat. Luckily, the basic necessity get a little dramatic this season with loads of shearling.

While some brands such as Altuzarra took a minimalist approach to this trend, the majority was in favor of maximalism. Miuccia Prada's sheeny fabrics and vivid color palettes act as the poster child for this phenomenon- the perfect blend between a wearable coat and a high-octane piece. If you're truly looking to make a sartorial splash, Akris's Creative Director Albert Kriemler brought this trend to the next level with an unapologetically textured coat. Looking for lots of shearling with a subdued color palette? Sacai's thick, textured lapel completely fits the bill. And calling all cool girls: Coach's collection of cropped, shearling-clad jackets are sure to be your staple this season. Streamlined, ostentatious, or something in between, there's at least one to swoon over.

The million dollar question: how do you rock this trend without looking like a glorified yetti? While adding a shearling bag to any ensemble may the easiest way to embrace this phenomenon, it would be a major mistake not to experiment with one of the market's crazy coats. From a subtle collar to courageous fuzz, there are so many options on the market that you are bond to fall in love with at least one piece. But just because you're amplifying your look's texture doesn't mean you can't also play with volume. A wide leg trouser with a frills-filled coat or pleated skirt with a lined bomber are great choices. However, if you have a penchant for accessories, there are some amazing bags and shoes to choose from as well. Instead of bringing your outdoorsy spirit to the sartorial limelight, opt for textured, minimalist pieces--a crisp tote or streamlined booties are ideal.

Spring 2014 Trend: Extravagant Embellishments

If this season proves anything, the days of minimalism have taken a brief hiatus. With a multitude of zesty prints to choose from, spring is all about being bold. While punhcy beading and outrageous embellishments are nothing new on the catwalk-- just look at Elie Saab's collections every season-- designers have been finding a new way to intertwine these fripperies into "of the moment" looks. Classic brands such as Louis Vuitton and Prada added some gems in unexpected ways: while Marc Jacobs tapped into logomania and showgirl style for his Vuitton swan song, Miuccia Prada added some sparkle to her sporty looks. At the same time, more contemporary brands utilized embellishments as well. The creative minds at Marni and Collette Dinnigan created impressive head-to-toe looks-- the craftsmanship is unreal. With sexy cutouts, Sharon Wauchob gives this trend a very adult twist. With a few modernized tweaks, this trend is perfect for the most au courant fashionistas.

As this season's premier runway looks prove, there is no single way to wear this trend. You can channel your inner tomboy like Vuitton, emulate Wauchob's laid back sex appeal, go unapologetically feminine  a la Dinnigan-- the choice is seriously yours! Be warned: this ensemble will make heads turn. If you're not ready to make a sartorial splash, opt for an embellished accessory-- the ideal low-risk way to rock this trend. But, as with any trend, there are a few key rules you must follow.  Firstly, make  your embellished piece the focal point of your outfit. Why pit gem against prints, fringe, and metallics? The end result will be a kitschy ensemble... so not chic! If you're not sporting an entirely bedazzled ensemble, pair your trendy piece with a pair of boyfriend jeans or anything in a neutral hue or a shade that matches your glitzy apparel. To avoid a complete "Viva Las Vegas" moment,  rock a sleek ponytail or a neat blow out. Above all things, be very careful with your embellished pieces. Since gems are notorious for falling off after a few wears, make sure you have extra jewels as back up!

13 Dream Pieces of 2013

Style savants, 2014 is coming. It seems like just yesterday we were all shaking in our Saint Laurent boots, fearing the rumored Apocalypse. Over a year since December 21st, 2012, and I'm happy to report that the world is still turning. As many fashionistas (and fashionistos) know, trends come and go; however, there are some pieces that capture one's attention well into the new year. The next twelve months has so much to offer: Nicolas Ghesquière's debut at Louis Vuitton and Peter Pilotto X Target, for example. However, in the spirit of reflecting on our pasts, let's take a moment to honor some of this year's outstanding, game-changing pieces. Sure, they don't fit many fashion groupies' budgets, but can't a girl dream?
Proenza Schouler PS11 Open Toe Sandal ($975): As everyone knows, Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough have a knack for turning their "Anti It" pieces into the hottest picks on the market. Though these kicks may not be perfect for a cold winter evening, you have to admit they're pretty major. Chunky heel, Grecian straps, and subtle hardware? Sign me up!  They're those kind of shoes that would look just as amazing with a slouchy pant as they would with a midi skirt. Versatility makes some of the greatest pieces. (Photo)

Rag & Bone Roseburg Coat ($1.095): As the creative minds behind Carven, Rochas and Céline taught us, oversized statement coats were the must-have piece for this chilly season. Though the aforementioned brands unleashed masculine silhouettes in girly prints and soft pastels, there is something so beautiful about a camel coat. Though is gorgeous tan is different from your go-to neutrals (ie: black and grey), this hue is versatile enough to wear for many seasons.(Photo)
Stella McCartney Strapless Jumpsuit ($2,965): In case you've been living under a rock these past few months, you know that 2013 was arguably the year of the jumpsuit. Major brands-- 3.1 Phillip Lim, Rag & Bone, and Zero+ Maria Cornejo, for example-- unveiled tailored playsuits while Sarah Jessica Parker rocked one at the 2013 BAFTAs. Honestly, this Stella McCartney takes the sartorial cake. The execution is absolutely impeccable, not to mention the black and navy color combination is very au courant. (Photo)
Chloé Ruffled Silk-Blend Satin Gown ($5,595): Don't get me wrong: I love a classic, tailored ensemble just as much as the next trendsetter. However, I am a complete sucker for a "no expense spared" evening gown. I'm a girly girl at heart, and this Chloé number has me smitten. Designer Claire Waight Keller describes her cruise collection as "barefoot attitude," and this dress singlehandedly brings unapologetic glamour and effortlessly chic together. (Photo)

Rosie Assoulin Silk-Faille Drapped-Back Maxi Skirt ($2,995): It's 2013, for crying out loud! Your evening wear is no longer restricted to gowns. Separates galore are now available to spruce up your nighttime looks. This Rosie Assoulin skirt is absolutely perfection. Though it may appear high-brow to some, this piece is a potent ingredient to a jaw-dropping ensemble. Whether you sport this skirt with a blouse a la Carolina Herrera or add a boxy or cropped top, this piece is extremely versatile and works for a wide range of ages. Plus, that soft pink is to die for.(Photo)
Lanvin Stephanie Gold-Tone Necklace ($990): Though everyone adores a dainty necklace or set of chandelier earrings, there's something extremely fun and street style about  a kitschy piece of statement jewelry. This year, fashion house Lanvin unleashed its own collection of logomania gems, which includes varsity numbers and fun slogans. My personal favorite is this gold necklace. It's fun enough to sport with a tough motto jacket, yet smooth enough to pair with a tea-length cocktail dress.  (Photo)
Kenzo Quilted Satin Reptile Jacquard Skirt ($510): Between the spunky eye print and touchable textiles, Kenzo's Carol Lim has a way with patterns and fabrics. Unlike some of the brand's other pieces, I love this skirt because its dark color palette is quite versatile; however, the intriguing fabric gives it the option of becoming a true statement piece. The boxy silhouette may not  be ideal for a night on the town, but can we say
 office chic?  (Photo)
Peter Pilotto Kristen Printed Textured Cotton-Blend Dress ($2,055):  I'm not one for vibrant color palettes and high-octane patterns, but I know a good dress when I see it. And this piece is definitely "it."  Fashion demands us to dream. We're supposed to dream ourselves into an advertisement or photo spread, and we're suppose to imagine life with those fantastic pieces we spot on the runways. Peter Pilotto's Kristen dress makes me dream of going on a tropical vacation. I would tie my hair into a chignon, add some wooden bangles, and throw on some tan wedges (maybe even a red-orange lip). The dreamer in me says, "Très magnifique!" (Photo)
Helmut Lang Leather and Jacquard Jacket ($1,195): Give me any motto jacket, and I'll be happy; however, there's nothing better than a reworked motto jacket. The nonchalance of the silhouette is a bonafide classic while the leather and jacquard blocking revitalizes this ultra-cool jacket. J'adore. (Photo)
Tibi Printed Silk Gazar Skirt ($650):If I haven't made it clear enough, allow me to spell it out: I love Tibi. I love its fun take on sportswear Americana, so it's no surprise that I would go ga-ga for this skirt. The splatter paint print gives a whole new take on the ultra feminine silhouette. Though this piece screams summer, it would look cute with loads of layers. And honestly, when Eva Chen wears something, you love it!  (Photo)

Givenchy Black Bambi Print Neoprene Sweatshirt ($1,375): Couch potatoes, rejoice! Big brands such as Reed Krakoff, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Chanel, and Kenzo debuted chic sweats this fall, which gives you complete permission to wear  (stylish) sweats out on the town. Out of all the stylish picks, this Givenchy piece is my favorite. There's something so artistic, yet completely covetable, about this piece.  Gothic yet fun, it's the perfect piece for any fashionista who wants to be cozy and stylish. If you can magically drop  hundreds of dollars on this sweatshirt, please copy the runway look and pair it with a sheer skirt. (Photo)

Reed Krakoff Wool-Blend Wrap Skirt ($990): Though semi-pleated skirts were all the rage this year (never forget the Zara pleated skort epidemic), this Reed Krakoff skirt revitalizes the envelope shape. The white peek-a-boo panel adds a striking dash of color while the wrap form shows just the right amount of leg.  (Photo)
Prada Saffiano Lux Tote ($1,995):I'm always on a never-ending quest for the ultimate bag: something that has an optional strap, is large enough for Mary Poppins's essentials, and comes in yummy neutrals. Luckily, this bag fits the bill. If the size and shape aren't good enough, this putty hue is to die for.  (Photo)

Fall 2013 Trend: Oversized Coats

So long spring, hello fall. After months of sherbet hues and spicy ruffles, it's officially time for autumn-approved trends. As always, I'm here to give you the low-down on what to wear this chilly season. Get ready, fashionistas: the fall trends guide has arrived.

A necessity for when the temperatures drop, sporting a heavy jacket is always a fall must. With an oversized shape, coats are more of a statement piece this season. Masculinity meets femininity, as sharp lapels and closures are doused in dreamy pastels.  This boys versus girls fad sends a very clear message: contrary to popular belief, you can have it all-- sartorially, that is.

Louis Vuitton

Prada
Carven

Rochas
Unlike some of spring's best trends--ruffles, tie-dye, and the list goes on-- this trend is for the drama-free minimalist of the fashion world. But just because this string of coats calls for streamlined silhouettes doesn't mean your outfits have to be boring.  For a night on the town, pair your statement jacket with black skinnies, black booties, and a black top. Craving a ladylike outfit? This trend will be office-appropriate with a pencil skirt and modest heels or stylish loafers. And if you're seriously itching for an "off the charts" ensemble, take a note from Louis Vuitton's fall collection and combine clashing prints. But instead of striving to create a loud getup, focus on luxe patterns. As for the accessories, pair this look with structured pieces: a sleek choker, retro handbag, and a classic pair of cat-eye sunnies are some great options. But beware tastemakers: you're probably going to get a lot of compliments on your classic ensemble. After the twentieth compliment you receive, realize that I told you so, smile, and say "thank you."

Spring 2013 Trend Report: All About the Applique

Honestly, fashion would be boring if designers didn't mix it up with different silhouettes, color palettes, fabrics and, most importantly, applique. Appli-what? Since what seems like the beginning of time, designers have been attaching trinkets and excess pieces of fabric to their perfectly crafted threads. This season, it seems as if the applique craze is bigger than ever. From delicate jewels to punky fripperies, there is no better way to spice up an outfit.

Marchesa
Prada
Dires Van Noten
Chanel
Dolce & Gabbana
Oscar de la Renta

One of the many reasons I love this phenomenon is because anything goes. From clothes to accessories, an appliqued piece gives depth and dimension to any look. Plus, you have the freedom to style your applique however you see fit. Whether you mix and match these picks for an "out-of-this-world" look or counteract the trend's extravagance with sleek extras, your ensemble is sure to be a homerun. But, like any other trend, it's absolutely crucial that you put your brave face on. You're supposed to wear this trend, not the other way around.

Spring 2013 Trend Report: Structured Bags

Though micro purses dominated the spring shows, a slew of sartorially superior (try saying that five times fast) bags are a game changer for any accessories report. With ample space, modern shapes and a range of different price points, this phenomenon is a must-have for any trendsetter. But when it comes to the actual silhouette, several on-the-pulse brands declare it's fair game. While I'm so smitten with winged totes, the simplified shopper is always a classic. Inspired by this trend, I culled the best picks from the market. Check out my favorite structured bags that would make Mary Poppins jealous.
Saffiano Leather Tote (Prada, $1,960): Goodbye power suit, hello power purse!  Though this find costs a small fortune, you have to admit that Miuccia knows best. Inject this traditional piece into a super whimsy ensemble-- try a poppy sheath or a pair of floral trousers. Businesswoman chic never looked so cool.
Alyson Mini Tote (Chloé, $1,159): Not only is the cream and black color combination to die for, the bag's feminine figure is everything. Can we say, "Parisian chic?"  Let the cream base stand out with an entirely black ensemble: black skinnies, black top and black wedges. C'est magnifique!
Tartine Satchel (J.Crew, $325): If anyone can create a zesty bag that's still undeniably versatile, it's J.Crew. Though most fashion groupies will make this bright bag their ensemble's necessary pop of color, why not put your brave face on and pair this piece with a loud ensemble? Take your springtime style to the next level with a printed maxi. Not too crazy about this rambunctious hue? This bag also comes in black and navy.
Winged Lady Tote (Topshop, $170): Similar to the Tartine Satchel, Topshop's remedition features a delightful fabric duo. With suede panels, this leather tote is perfect for a style maven who needs to give her classic pieces a dash of pizzazz.  Whether you pair it with a denim playsuit or chunky knit, you will be sporting this tote season after season.
Large Shopper (Zara, $80): If you're a structured bag novice, it doesn't get much better than this. The cutting-edge silhouette is perfectly paired with a classic color palette and minimal hardware. The result? The ultimate everyday bag. For a downtown chic look, pair this top with a funky chambray, shorts, and a fun pair of flats.

I Fancy: Shoes

It should come as no surprise that I love to shop. Scratch that, I'm obsessed. Between devouring my favorite glossies to my time in London, I've been suffocated with inspiration. Consequently, the need to shop and style has become borderline unbearable. But why just keep my fashion fantasies between me and my wallet? Enter my latest blog series, "I Fancy." Check out what I'm craving each week.

As impressive as Big Ben and Kensington Palace are, I can't help but look down... at the local's shoes, obviously. The fearlessness that London's chic elite embrace every single day as they plan their ensembles is inspiring, especially when it comes to their choice of shoes. Gone are the days when simple ballet flats will do. Now, it's all about being an individual, head to toe.

I Fancy: Shoes

Nicholas Kirkwood platform heels / rag & bone lace up wedge boots, $320 / rag & bone leather shoes / Prada shoes, $620 / Frye / Loeffler Randall / Dr. Martens flat boots, $195 / River Island studded shoes, $48 / AX Paris flat boots, $47

1. Lace-Up Espadrilles: Who needs a pop of color when this funky print offers a similar sartorial punch? Though espadrilles usually scream summer, I couldn't gush about these shoes soon enough. Casual and stylish, these kicks are the ideal transition piece.
2. Doc Martens: Rest assured, these shoes can be chic. Whether paired with skinnies and a cozy beanie or juxtaposed with an ethereal lace dress, Doc Martens are surprisingly versatile. In a versatile color, of course-- bright pink Docs are obviously a "stand out" piece.
3. A Serious Heel: I really mean a serious heel. The daring height plus the juvenile Mary Jane silhouette is genius. Whether you pair them with a classic LBD or rock the nerdy look with a pair of ruffled socks, these shoes are sure to be a hit.
4. Penny Loafers: The middle-aged woman in me is so in love with this anti-trend. Though these shoes are probably as retro as your grandmother's plastic couch, spice them up with a cutting-edge look and allow them to act as a versatile staple.
5. Wedge Booties: Even stiletto-stomping trendsetters have to admit that wedges are the best way to score some much-needed height. Can we say comfortable?  I'm absolutely obsessed with this woodsy approach to the widely popular shape. It's very "Katniss Everdeen hits the catwalk." So smitten.
6. Low Chelsea Boot: Can it get more British than this? the length suggests edgy while the sleek silhouette screams minimalism. Amazing. Plus, these kicks are the perfect going out shoe if you don't want the achy arches in the morning.
7. Desert Boot: Forgo your cowgirl boots and put your best foot forward with the hottest western-inspired shoe. While this may not be your funkiest pair of kicks, they offer the perfect dose of effortless chic.
8. Fun Smoking Loafers: If I had to pick two male style icons to emulate, I'd have to say Liberace (naturally) and Chuck Bass. These masculine loafers? Totally Chuck Bass. The sleek silhouette paired with the canary yellow and braided detailing offers a really cool take on a classic shoe. Basic enough to complete a zany look and crazy enough to be the standout accessory? I'll take a pair!
9. Traditional Slingbacks: Crazy kicks are all the rage; however, it's imperative to go back to the basics every now and then. Unlike my other picks, these offer a sophisticated twist to any ensemble. And deep down, doesn't everyone want to channel their inner Audrey Hepburn? Exactly.

When in Milan

Regardless of the trend or sources of inspiration, Milan Fashion Week always epitomizes luxe style. This season, Milan gave us an understated extravagance and gothic glam. Sounds like an oxymoron, right? After looking at these collections, I have a sneaking suspicion you'll feel the same way.

I don't know if it's the overtly feminine silhouettes or the fact that the prints resemble stained glass, but this collection gives me a gothic feeling. From outerwear to cute little dresses, Rimondi and Aquilano embrace the idea of a glamourous and feminine woman. The play with different fabrics is absolutely gorgeous and gives the ensembles a little more depth. Each ensemble has these gorgeous details that are simply out of this world.Surprisingly, the two designers have a healthy blend between sartorial pieces and girly separates. This whole collection reminds me of a more gothic version of Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet. (Photo Cred)
In my mind, this collection is the perfect RTW collection to follow Prada's previous one. The retro-inspired silhouettes and the use of busy prints is so reminiscent of Miuccia's spring RTW collection. Of course, the two collections are not carbon copies of each other: this fall collection includes darker colors and longer sleeves.Even the use of pantsuits show progression from the Spring RTW collection. It seems like Miuccia is telling us a story about femininity and I like it. (Photo Cred)
There's something so extravagant about this collection- a la 90's flashy glam- that I'm mildly obsessed with. Though some people may look at the extremely colorful fur with disgust, I love it. Obviously, I would never wear some of these pieces; however, I admire the unapologetic flashiness of this collection. Ironically enough, they do add some extremely polished pieces to this show.Is it weird that I secretly want to wear that sparkly suit to an interview? (Photo Cred)
This collection encompasses two different kind of femininity: sexy womanhood and girlish florals. Although these two types of femininity seem like night and day, the use of lace and similar silhouettes throughout the collection link the two themes together. On a side note, Domenico and Stefano have the ability to use lace in a progressive and fun way.Besides the lace, the two designers used other detailing and appliques perfectly. Yes, perfectly.Let's be honest, this designing duo is perfection. (Photo Cred)
Like Aquilano. Rimondi, this collection has a very gothic- Baz Luhrmann aesthetic. However, this collection has more emotional roots, like Gianni Versace's last collection before his tragic death. Of course, in true Donatella fashion, this collection offers optimism with it's cheery yellows and oranges. Also, that sequin piping? Phenomenal. (Photo Cred)
Trussardi
Usually, I'm not a fan of androgynous fashion; however, this is a fun take on the trend. The clothes have a sense of masculinity, but their sartorial lines aren't butch. The interesting mix of color and fabric is refreshing.  For some reason or another, this collection appeals to me. I can picture a lot of these pieces working fabulously as separates. Also, I love the way this whole collection is styled: the offbeat monochromatism gives each piece more depth and wearability. (Photo Cred)
Salvatore Ferragamo
I can confidently say that Massimiliano Giornetti successfully incorporated two opposite ends of the spectrum in one collection: the corporate betch (one of my favorite ways to dress) and the bohemian. To lessen the randomness, Giornetti incorporates strong silhouettes with the bohemian fabric. Additionally, there are also bohemian silhouettes in black. Then to top it all off, Giornetti throw a little bit of equestrian. For the record, those structured equestrian jackets are to die for. I think  I love this collection because Giornetti somehow incorporates all of these looks but orders them in such a way that doesn't make the variety awkward or arbitrary. This collection reflects how I feel about personal style: you should never restrict yourself to one category of personal style. Bravo, Giornetti.(Photo Cred)

Bottega Veneta
To be perfectly honest, I didn't love the first half of this collection. There's nothing wrong with clean silhouettes and pops of pretty hues; however, it's nothing to swoon over. However, this collection's evening wear is too good to ignore. It all started with the feathers: anything that incorporates a halter top and  feathered skirt is worthy of some attention, don't you think? I love how Tomas Maier played with black and nude: super elegant, yet super sexy. Then the longer dresses happened. I could really picture Emma Stone rocking some of these printed numbers. The finale dress' mix of textures really took my breath away. So stunning. If you're going to take anything from this collection, here it is: never ever underestimate the power of evening wear.(Photo Cred)
Gucci
Maybe I'm an eternal brooding soul, but I'm obsessed with dark color palettes. As much as I do love a pop of color here and there, dark clothes just scream gothic glamour to me, which Milan Fashion Week tells me is totally in for the fall. I'm even enamored with this collection's dark green looks. The baggy silhouettes give this collection an effortless sophistication. They give you something that you can wear out to a fancy dinner or lounge around at home and either way, you'd still be the chicest chick ever. I also love how Frida Giannini toyed around with different textures and types of outerwear. Feathered cropped jackets and sleek black capes? It's like she read my mind. In short, I just really want to spend the rest of my life in this collection. Too far? Fashion people love to exaggerate. As for my inner beauty nerd, I'm going bonkers over the makeup. Dark lip for fall? Sign me up!(Photo Cred)
Jil Sander
As we all know by now, I'm not a fan of minimalism. Maybe someday- that's me trying to broaden my fashion horizons- but not today. However, I must give credit where credit is due. And credit is due at Jil Sander. Though Raf Simons was let go, I must say that this is my favorite Jil Sander collection of his. Instead of letting minimalism radiate the same old emotionless aesthetic, he gives it a feminine spin. The soft, candy colors work perfectly with the sleek silhouettes. The subtle color blocking and the striking cutouts make this collection fun to look at. Also, who can resist a hint of metallic? All in all, doesn't this collection remind you of something you'd see Ann Margaret wear back in the good 'ol days? Just me? (Photo Cred)
