Summer 2014 Trend: Summer Slides

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past few months, you know that the once squirm-worthy Birkenstocks are this summer's must-have shoe. Megawatt brands such as Givenchy, Céline, and Giambattista Valli have been jumping on the podiatric bandwagon, and let's not forget how many celebrities and tastemakers have been spotted sporting this comfortable shoe. But what's a style savant to do if she (or he) can't stop thinking of this ugly chic trend as purely ugly? Become a trend slave and wear the kicks regardless? Instead, feast your eyes upon this season's other major footwear trend: the slide. Yes, they're also making a major comeback. Though pulling out those sporty pool slides you'd wear after swimming a few laps or during a shower in your college dorm offers a blast from the past, there are so many incredible market finds that are begging to be worn that you are bound to find the perfect shoe. While Miuccia Prada mixed unapologetically flashy gems with a sportier silhouette, Tibi's Amy Smilovic added funky embellishments to a minimalist silhouette. J.W. Anderson offered a refreshing twist on this classic silhouette with a square fold-over. Whether you love Chloé's spring or pre-fall take on this trend, one thing is for sure: Clare Waight Keller's magic touch includes a dash of metal hardware. And if you're not wanting to splurge on a new pair of the au courant sandal, it's okay to take a sartorial trip down memory lane by giving your trust pool slides from many moons ago a second life-- Rita Ora made ordinary extraordinary with striped socks. Whether you're hitting the beach or heading out to your favorite summer hot-spot for drinks, think of these kicks as essentials to every summer outfit. Since these shoes have such a simple silhouette, they are extremely versatile. I love the juxtaposition of this minimalist shoe with a dainty slip dress-- the combination screams effortlessly chic. Feeling a little sporty? Try a pair of tailored shorts with a lightweight sweater. For a borrowed from the boys look, try these shoes with a pair of cozy linen pants. The Trendologist Loves: Mules

Deny it all you want, but you love shoes. Even if you collect a plethora of purses or statement jewels, you can't help but get a little weak in the knees when you see a stunning pair of kicks. Every style savant is different: some may go ga-ga for sky-high heels while others adore a good ballerina flat. As for me? Lately, I've been obsessed with the ever-so-sleek mule. Though the silhouette is nothing new to a shoe connoisseur, this "barely there bootie" is the epitome of forward-thinking fashion. If you too were bit by the mule bug (which sounds like some rare, but deadly, disease), I come with good news: they are going to be all the rage this fall. From Reed Krakoff to Alexander Wang, fashion's finest have gifted us with a bevy of styles to choose from.

One of my favorite things about mules is that they are extremely versatile. The key to rocking these is to keep the rest of your ensemble's silhouette crisp. As much as you may want to wear your favorite summer dress one last time before the leaves change colors, do not pair this trend with something frilly-- you'll just look confused. From a fitted dress at the office to boyfriend jeans and a tee for brunch with your fellow trendsetters, mules can be dressed up or down.

I Fancy: Shoes

It should come as no surprise that I love to shop. Scratch that, I'm obsessed. Between devouring my favorite glossies to my time in London, I've been suffocated with inspiration. Consequently, the need to shop and style has become borderline unbearable. But why just keep my fashion fantasies between me and my wallet? Enter my latest blog series, "I Fancy." Check out what I'm craving each week.

As impressive as Big Ben and Kensington Palace are, I can't help but look down... at the local's shoes, obviously. The fearlessness that London's chic elite embrace every single day as they plan their ensembles is inspiring, especially when it comes to their choice of shoes. Gone are the days when simple ballet flats will do. Now, it's all about being an individual, head to toe.

1. Lace-Up Espadrilles: Who needs a pop of color when this funky print offers a similar sartorial punch? Though espadrilles usually scream summer, I couldn't gush about these shoes soon enough. Casual and stylish, these kicks are the ideal transition piece.
2. Doc Martens: Rest assured, these shoes can be chic. Whether paired with skinnies and a cozy beanie or juxtaposed with an ethereal lace dress, Doc Martens are surprisingly versatile. In a versatile color, of course-- bright pink Docs are obviously a "stand out" piece.
3. A Serious Heel: I really mean a serious heel. The daring height plus the juvenile Mary Jane silhouette is genius. Whether you pair them with a classic LBD or rock the nerdy look with a pair of ruffled socks, these shoes are sure to be a hit.
4. Penny Loafers: The middle-aged woman in me is so in love with this anti-trend. Though these shoes are probably as retro as your grandmother's plastic couch, spice them up with a cutting-edge look and allow them to act as a versatile staple.
5. Wedge Booties: Even stiletto-stomping trendsetters have to admit that wedges are the best way to score some much-needed height. Can we say comfortable?  I'm absolutely obsessed with this woodsy approach to the widely popular shape. It's very "Katniss Everdeen hits the catwalk." So smitten.
6. Low Chelsea Boot: Can it get more British than this? the length suggests edgy while the sleek silhouette screams minimalism. Amazing. Plus, these kicks are the perfect going out shoe if you don't want the achy arches in the morning.
7. Desert Boot: Forgo your cowgirl boots and put your best foot forward with the hottest western-inspired shoe. While this may not be your funkiest pair of kicks, they offer the perfect dose of effortless chic.
8. Fun Smoking Loafers: If I had to pick two male style icons to emulate, I'd have to say Liberace (naturally) and Chuck Bass. These masculine loafers? Totally Chuck Bass. The sleek silhouette paired with the canary yellow and braided detailing offers a really cool take on a classic shoe. Basic enough to complete a zany look and crazy enough to be the standout accessory? I'll take a pair!
9. Traditional Slingbacks: Crazy kicks are all the rage; however, it's imperative to go back to the basics every now and then. Unlike my other picks, these offer a sophisticated twist to any ensemble. And deep down, doesn't everyone want to channel their inner Audrey Hepburn? Exactly.

Trendologist-Approved: Flatforms

Without a doubt, flatforms are my must-have shoe of the summer.  I completely understand when some people say they look like old lady shoes (and by some people, I mean my mother), but I love how flatforms are unapologetically funky. As I've mentioned before, I'm obsessed with the blend of height and wearability- absolutely genius!

There are so many takes on the flatform, how will you know which is the best choice for you? If you're looking for an everyday pair to wear to the anywhere and everywhere, I suggest a minimalist silhouette in a neutral color. If you're looking for a youthful kick, definitely rock a color-blocked pair or a funky yellow. Embracing the metallic trend along with the flatform frenzy is also super cool (not to mention uber Grecian). I'm probably going to invest in 30 flatforms (bye, bank account).

TMA.

You may wonder what TMA stands for. Well, ladies and gentleman (yes, one man), TMA stands for T.J. Maxx's Anonymous. Yes, I've come to the startling conclusion that I have a problem: I am addicted to T.J. Maxx. It has turned to a place that my mother dragged me to into a place that I drag my mother to. Just kidding, we merrily drive there unanimously. When we get there, we literally go crazy. There's no stopping us. It's kind of scary but kind of amazing. Among many other things we purchased, I got these two pairs of shoes that I'm so smitten with it's a little sad. They are both Franco Sarto and they're both amazing.

I love the wedges, the cutouts make it really versatile and summer appropriate. The suede, however, makes it a good transition piece for the fall. These shoes, or something like them, would be awesome with a summery dress or even jeans and a plain blouse.

This are the trendy cowgirl boots. While I think taller ones are great for the south, I think these cropped ones can be trendy anywhere! I recently made these shoes "boho chic" with some distressed jeggings and an oversized tunic.  And how cool with this be with a sick caftan?

If the Shoe Fits?

*DISCLAIMER: Two of my friends and I, we call ourselves "The Lady Three," are reading Tina Fey's Bossypants so I'm in an incredibly witty and "trying-to-be-funny mood." Sorry if this post is like bad standup. 

A few days ago, I was having a fun browsing spree on the Neiman Marcus website. Like any girl, I have a dream. A dream of having a Carrie Bradshaw shoe collection. I'm talking Manolos- though I am more of a Louboutin girl-Dolce &Gabbana , Brian Atwood,  Jimmy Choo: THE WORKS. Shoes, like any other accessory, should be full of risk and really show off your personal style. But I have to ask myself, and you beautiful people who read this blog, where do we draw the line? 

Exhibit A: Brian Atwood's Tie-Up Feather Sandal

Though Brian Atwood makes incredible shoes, I was kind of afraid of these. Call me a Vegas Showgirl, but I love the glitz and glamour side of fashion. The more the merrier, right? Not when it's in the form of a leopard/bow/feather shoe. This, ladies and the four gents who actually read my blog- I told you this would be bad standup-is way too much. Even if this was paired with a little black dress or a menswear inspired suit, it'd be wouldn't be proportionate. After comparing this shoe to the Ostrich Feather Bootie- which I do quite like- I think I've found the reason this shoe is a little intimidating: the cut outs. Yes, the feathers make me feel like my feet would be attacked by creepy-crawlers; however, I think it'd be a bit more bearable without the sexy cut out. Picture this as a bootie. A little bit better, right?

Exhibit B: Diego Dolcini Fur-Ankle T Strap Sandal

I suppose this isn't that out of the question, but I always question a prominent ankle strap in fear that I may have a sad case of cankle-itis. And this reminds me too much of a crazy rich housewife, Muffy, who plays squash at the local Country Club and is mean to her servants: did I mention the Lady Three book club also read The Help? But on a serious- well, fashion serious- note, I think I find these boundary pushing because of the randomness of the fur. The  Fanned Zip Back Sandal  is more of a fashion-forward piece; however, it isn't all over the place, like Brian Atwood's crazy cut out, but is cohesive. My Dear Diego, this shoe would've been sexy without the fur; now it just look like you're trying too hard.

I love your shoes more than a fat kid loves cake, cliche but true. While I understand that these shoes were created for  fundraiser and although they are incredibly beautiful, my legs temporary go numb and my feet ache when I look at this picture. These shoes are art, but  "ow".

After reviewing these shoes, however, I do have to ask myself if I'm just being a weenie when it comes to extravagant shoes? Am I not the Vegas Showgirl I thought I was? Or is there truly a limit? If That's Movin' Up Then I'm Moving Out

This is a little sentimental, my last blog post as a college freshman. As any year, there were some fashion highs and fashion lows. But after freshman year, everything seems so old and scary. Anywho, I recently bought some absolutely fabulous pairs of shoes. Why not feature them here?

When it comes to summer shoes, the most important part is comfort The summer is so hot and sticky, do you really want to fuss with your shoes on top of all the problems summer brings? Nope. Also, showing off and awesome pedi is also a most, so an open toe is appropriate! 

I loved the strong lines on this sandal. So Hercules chic! I can totally picture these being matched with a maxi skirt or a cute little sundress!

How adorable is the floraled fabric? These shoes and feminine and really comfortable. I think these would look awesome with a simple LBD.

I love the floral appliques on these little Calvin Kleins! For a relaxed look, I would wear these with dark skinny- either dark blue or black- and a fun summer top! 

I wore these last week and I seriously felt like a supermodel. The tan leather strap and the height of the wedge made me have legs for days! I think to continue to lengthen your legs, go for short shorts or a romper!



Now that I have my summer shoes already picked out, there's one more thing I'm craving for this season: high waisted bathing suit. I know that might sound kind of weird and make you wonder if I'm an old lady. Well, no I'm not.  I think there's something so undeniably vintage and chic about a high waisted bathing suit. J'adore.

I love this MARC by Marc Jacobs creation. The height of the waist is actually perfect and I love the color and print; so retro. I, or anyone, could totally wear this with a large sun hat and movie star-worthy sunnies!

Swooning Over Shoes

While I'm not Jane from "Sea of Shoes", I do love a good pair of shoes. Honestly, what girl doesn't?  My trip to the city gave me a plethora of shoes to lust over, so why not share the love?

First Order of Business: Miu Miu Jewel- Heel Satin Pump

Obsessed. Regardless of the trends, I will always be a glitz-fanatic; it is seriously the perfect way to spice up an outfit! The black satin, mixed with the rhinestones  creates a perfect blend of elegance and glamour. Miu Miu kept it classy by making this shoe have a chunky and short heel instead of creating a chic stripper shoe.  Though Miu Miu is charging a pretty penny for these (try $595), I think these are better priced than other shoes because they are so pragmatic. You won't be wobbling and hurting from these!  Can we picture these paired with a knee-long LBD or some skinny jeans and a flowy white blouse? Amazing! 

Second Order of Business: Chanel Mesh Peep Toe Ankle Boot

Even when Lagerfeld doesn't live up to my expectations, I could never ever hate Chanel.  And this shoe is so right on.  I look at these shoes and think of a much better version of the cage bootie trend. The silhouette is so sophisticated and a nice change from Chanel's quilted shoes. And these are mega-versatile! You could wear these with a conservative shift dress  or even a body-con outfit if you're feeling extra sexy!  So smitten with these!

Third, and Final, Order of Business : Rag&Bone Harrow Boot

Can we say mega retro/ Rachel Zoe? The mixture of colors and materials, in addition to the interestingly chunky heel, makes this shoe incredible unique.  And that chunky heel will allow any aspiring fashionista to strut with confidence and comfort. I love a good shootie! These would be awesome for spring and fall: a short sundress for spring and skinnies and a tunic for fall. Rag&Bone is quickly becoming one of my favorite designers!

Maybe one day I'll have these shoes for myself!

It's official, she is the luckiest girl on the planet. I don't really have anything else to say about this matter, just that I'm extremely jealous. Since I frequent talk about my love/hate relationship with Blake Lively, I thought this would be appropriate. And in terms of the Chanel ad, I like it: the asymmetrical composition is interesting and let's be honest, she looks fabulous.

The Power of Red

First of all, I'm really sorry this blog is all over the place! I feel really guilty for not blogging in a while and am going off on a tangent, so bear with me! I just came back from college-ing and fell even more in love with the university I'll be attending come fall.I stocked up on my school apparel, and obviously red was one of the colors. I've always thought that red was such a great color: it was flattering, powerful,sexy, glamorous. Just like Christian Louboutin soles. I discussed the Louboutin/collaboration in my former blog, but I have never exactly analyzed how amazing Christian Louboutin is in my blog: he is honestly a genius.He knows exactly what a woman wants: comfort, appeal, and recognition. And his shoes do just that. I hope to have a whole closet of Louboutin heels when I grow up; I have already started my collection (a chartreuse leather wedge: they are comfortable and make my legs look great)! I love how he can create fun and sexy shoes in different heights and silhouettes. Of course we all love our stilettos, but there's only so much of it we can take! I've always found his inspiration so interesting: showgirls. As classy as we all love to say we are, I just know that everyone secretly wishes they danced in sequins and sparkles. But Louboutin can make shoes that are classy and fun at the same time! And the red sole was genius. It was unprecedented but the smartest thing. Women love feeling empowered as they strut down the street, with their red sole peeking out during each step. And it furthers Louboutin's brand! You know how people brought back the "Volkswagen punches", I think there should be "Louboutin punches" whenever somebody spots the red sole! Good plan? Whenever people think of high fashion heels, I feel like Jimmy Choo and Manolo Blahnik (thank you, Carrie Bradshaw) are the first brands to come to mind. But I really feel like, no offense to the other two (you have my complete love and admiration as well), Christian Louboutin is where it's at. I think we all need to start paying attention to him, his shoes, and the iconic red sole!
