10 Best Looks From the 2014 Cannes Film Festival

Let's be honest: it's easy to forget how glamourous the Cannes Film Festival is. While the Academy Awards is every style savant's super bowl and the Met Gala is the perfect time to nerd out over avant garde ensembles, the summer film event is a fashion marathon. Extravagant evening gowns, fun party dresses, and beachy casual wear-- this fête has it all. But between resort collections and mentally planning your summer outfits, this film festival tends glide off the radar until that first phenomenal outfit is a viral sensation. With so many days, and loads of red carpet home runs, it's hard to choose one outstanding moment. In no particular order, these ten looks highlight the creme de la Cannes.

1. Blake Lively at the Grace of Monaco Premiere (Gucci): From Céline's brushstroke prints and fringe scarves to Givenchy's flowing silhouettes, neo-tribal ran rampant on the spring runways. The Savages star took the trend and translated it for the mainstream red carpet. Lively's high slit combined  with a halter neckline keeps this look utterly sophisticated. For a finishing touch, the braided ankle straps perfectly complemented the dress's aesthetic while the slicked back hair allows the dress to take center stage.

2. Cate Blanchett at the How to Train Your Dragon 2 Premiere (Givenchy): The Oscars cemented the universal belief that Cate Blanchett can do no (sartorial) wrong, and this embellished Givenchy gown is no exception. With minimal jewels and slicked back hair, the Academy Award winning actress allows the spectacular bodice to be the focal point of this look; however, her pink pout and position as a bonafide movie star enables Blanchett to wear the dress, as opposed to the other way around. 

3. Eva Longoria at the Saint Laurent Premiere (Gabriela Cadena): It's been quite some time since the former Desperate Housewives actress graced the red carpet, a what a reunion it was. A vision in white, this look is major. The heavenly white is an ideal contrast to her naturally tan complexion. With such a petite frame, it's easy for a large dress to completely overwhelm Longoria; however, the simplicity of the gown permits the actress to take control of this ensemble. 

4. Kendall Jenner at the Grace of Monaco Premiere (Chanel): It''s no secret that the Kardashian klan is seamlessly transitioning from a televised guilty pleasure to genuine fashion fixtures. And unlike most models on the red carpet, this is truly a fashion moment. The textured bodice is perfectly balanced by the dress's clean skirt, which fits Jenner like a glove! Plus, the pair of costume earrings complements the bodice's chaos without compromising the whole look. Sleek hair a a poppy-colored lip, welcome to the Kardashians 2.0.

5. Jess Weixler at the Foxcatcher Premiere (Armani Prive): A breezy silhouette with thoughtful beading, this look marries ethereal beauty and high-impact fashion together. And it's kind of amazing. Weixler proves that there are more ways to make a statement at Cannes than by wearing a voluminous evening gown (though those are pretty major). The simple drop earrings complement the dress's texture without overwhelming the look.

6. Blake Lively at the Captives Premiere (Gucci): Completely different from the actress's other Gucci number, this dress is a bonafide leading lady look. The regal train is pure heaven while the former Gossip Girl star perfectly completes this look with luxe diamonds and a stunning red lip. And how chic is that chignon? Such a Grace Kelly moment.

7. Hilary Swank at The Homesman Premiere (Atelier Versace): The Million Dollar Baby  actress is known for sporting narrow silhouettes with bold features--who doesn't remember that amazing low back Guy Laroche number from the 2005 Academy Awards? The powerful asymmetrical strap adheres to her sartorial M.O. while the side-swept hair offers some balance to the overall look. And let's not forget to talk about how divine her jewels are! Colorful gems are the perfect way to make a quirky statement on the red carpet without looking like Helena Bonham Carter, and pairing some jewel-tone bling with an angelic neutral is completely on point. 

8. Liu Wen at the Two Days, One Night Premiere (Saint Laurent): Though the silhouette is nothing we haven't seen before, the super sexy slit and voluminous bodice  turn this look into a "wow" moment. While a sequined waist has the potential to look kitschy, the model's understated approach to this look prevents a major film festival faux pas. Wen's bold lip and high-octane earrings are the perfect way to command attention in a column black dress. J'adore.

9. Rosie Huntington Whiteley at The Search Premiere (Gucci): What comes to mind when you think of a metallic dress? Gold lamé at Studio 54? A Vegas showgirl after hours? This semi-pleated metallic dress is a game-changer. With a dash of sheen and super subtle pleats, this Gucci number wards off the flashy reputation most metallic dresses receive. This model is never afraid to sport extravagant appliqué or vibrant hues; however, the subdued hue combined with a simple silhouette makes this red carpet trend undeniably chic. Pairing the silver gown with drop diamond earrings offers a monochromatic look, which is tres au courant.

10. Sofia Coppola at the Foxcatcher Premiere (Michael Kors): As Hollywood's resident Queen of "Androgynous Chic", this Michael Kors number is Coppola's standout moment of the festival. The silhouette is so easy; however, the slit keyhole opening and dainty embellishments makes this dress Cannes ready. Plus, the mid-hemline and black and blue color combination is beyond chic. But would we expect anything less?

The Style Files: 'Cause You Moved to West LA, New York, or Santa Fe

I really do love Train. This band's music is always really epic or just super fun. Their latest song, Drive By, is really upbeat and always makes me want to bop.

Style Spiration: The Olsen Twins

Ever since my beyond amazing New York Fashion Week experience this season- more on in an upcoming blog post- I've become obsessed with the Olsen Twins. They exude innovation and style, which I admire so much. Also, they've really transformed from boho chic into sharp dressers; yet, they still maintain their own personal style. It's a very complex formula, but they always perfect it. I find it incredible that they've evolved from being those cute kids on Full House to true staples in the industry. 

At the debut of their Hollywood Star: Although they're notorious for dressing "granny chic" (who isn't every now and then?), I think that both Mary Kate and  Ashley have a knack for dressing age appropriate whilst looking undeniably chic. Let's look at Ashley's outfit (is that Ashley? I couldn't tell you) as an example, shall we? That purple haltered dress screams fun-loving. Pairing the dress with the uber luxe dangling earrings? So fabulous and dresses this look up. This already awesome look is finished up with that navy heel. So fashion forward.(Photo Cred)

At Spring 2012 RTW in New York: Usually, wearing sunglasses during a show is so silly...unless you're Anna Wintour. Even still, it's a little silly. Regardless,  this dolled up duo pulled off this look in a way that didn't bother me. The monochromatic look is still fun because they both mix strong separates that stay true to their personal style.  The light lip and wavy hair makes this look fresh and not snobby. (Photo Cred)

In Chanel: What I love about Mary Kate and Ashley's style is how they both dress as individuals; however, their looks are always cohesive with the other's. These two ensembles are so different, but they complement each other instead of clash. The disheveled hair ties the two looks together. I should also take this time to mention that I'm mildly obsessed with that black Chanel dress.   (Photo Cred)

Their looks from the 2009 Met Ball perfectly portrays their fashion success. They both know to have fun with fashion and pick beautiful pieces. The simplicity of Ashley's white dress complements all of the fripperies in Mary Kate's Lacroix dress. Also, Ashley's earrings as well as the silver back chain works well with the silver Lacroix. Perfection.

The Weekly

• Dakokta Fanning at Proenza Schouler AW 2012 (Proenza Schouler): This look is revolutionary for Dakota Fanning: it really shows us that she's a woman and a force to be reckoned with. The sharp construction of this sheath dress is super powerful, while the bright florals makes it not as threatening. The chunky black shoes work so well with the solid black sleeves. But the slightly undone hair shows us that she's still willing to have fun with her fashion choices.
• Jennifer Aniston at the Wanderlust premiere in LA (Tom Ford): This is such a crucial fashion moment for Jennifer Aniston. She always wears the same sexy, short dress so this was a huge change. Leather trim? Peplum?  Chevron? Incredible. She keeps this standout piece simple by rocking black shoes and straight hair. A major improvement.
• Blake Lively at the Noon by Noor Presentation (Noor): Blake Lively's been all about clean and fashion-forward silhouettes lately. I kind of love it. The innovation of a tuxedo dress works perfectly with the crisp black and white color combination. The pink lip gives an appropriate amount of color, while the metallic shoe makes this look funky and shows off her personal style.
• Lea Seydoux at the Berlin Film Festival (Elie Saab): I think sometimes people don't take me seriously when I say that a look took my breath away. But I am serious, for the record. Exhibit A? This dress. Everything about this look is so reminiscent about the 1970's and Cher. The long hair? The long sleeves? The dramatic, yet ethereal lace? The gold hoops? Perfectly simple and beautifully styled.

The Style Files: Now and Then I Think of all the Times You Screwed Me Over

When it comes to music, I have a very addictive personality: I'll literally listen to one song for days and mentally direct a really sick music video. This week? Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know." I'm always up for new music, so I was obviously so thrilled when one of my most fabulous friends recommended it to me. This song is a mix of sadness and angst, which I secretly love. Listen to this song and answer me this: does it make you want to cause a scene?

STYLE-SPIRATION: Cry Baby

This week, I decided to do something a little different with my Style Spiration section. Instead of focusing on a celebrity, I'm mixing it up and focusing on a movie. Yesterday afternoon, I watched Cry Baby for the first time and really enjoyed it for three reasons: 1) Johnny Depp is precious. 2) I'm a sucker for musical movies. 3) The clothes were surprisingly inspirational. I loved the mix of edgy biker chic and dainty dresses.  While both styles are stellar on their own, how cool would they look together? Think about it.

Talk about good girl gone bad! I'm obsessed with this dress and how it's styled. Red plus sequins? Out of control. I love the big hair and that red lip? Though some people may disagree , I think a red lip with a red dress is definitely a style do: uber glam. (Photo Cred)

This outfit is everything. I love the corset- inspired top and the leather skirt together. What I really love, which you can't see that well in this picture, is the makeup. Cat eye plus red lip? I'm dying of happiness. (Photo Cred)

Okay, so nix the lollipop and awkward neck scarf.  I love the whole combination of an oversized leather jacket and a pencil skirt. The perfect  mix of polished and edgy. What's cool about this look is that you can totally rock something like this now. Fashion has no time constraints. (Photo Cred)

THE WEEKLY

• Keira Knightley at the Dangerous Method Gala Premiere (Burberry): I'm going crazy over this dress. The subtle key hole is so seductive, especially with that fabulous back. I'm just a sucker for dramatic backs and this one definitely did not disappoint. This maroon is stunning her skin tone and I cannot complain about the beauty. The dark eye plus the light lip? She looks so vampy, but in the best way possible. Amazing.
• Rachel McAdams (Andrew Gn): Rachel McAdams always knows how to do high fashion in the most casual way. That silhouette is phenomenal. Although white's a little unexpected for winter, I love it: breaking rules is what fashion's all about. This look sans jewels is perfection: bracelets or even a necklace would've distracted everyone from the amazing craftsmanship. By now, all of you should know how I feel about a bold lip. So I don't even need to say it. 
• Lana Del Rey at Late Night with David Letterman:I'm obsessed with this look. As you know, I'm such a sucker for a long-sleeved mini and this silhouette gives this look such a feminine twist. Love. And those clunky shoes? Forget about it! Her makeup is a little plain for this look; however, I love her simple hair. Simple, feminine, and chic. 
• Blake Lively at a Godiva Event (Valentino): Literally, can she do any wrong? No, I really don't think she can. I love all of the texture in this outfit!  Keeping the colors light and feminine makes this look so aesthetically pleasing. The lack of jewels in this look is perfect: clean but still super fashion-forward and not boring! Also, the hair and makeup is the perfect thing to finish off this girly look.

Style Files: And We Will Float Above the Rift

Everyone has a mojo-less week every now and then. The Shins' "Simple Song" is my personal  musical medication for a mojo-less week. Maybe it's the beat or maybe the lyrics, but I'm loving it. Alright, enough with this potentially depressing introduction, le's get right into the action, shall we?

The Style Files: Demi Moore

Unless you've been living under a celebrity-gossip rock, you'll know about Demi Moore's terrifying rush to the hospital. I listened to the 911 call a couple of days ago and it was so scary. To show my support for Team Demi, this style-spiration goes out to her. I love Demi's style- even pre-Rachel Zoe- because she dresses for her age. At the same time, Demi also allows her clothes to show off her timeless beauty. 

At the 2009 Freedom Awards (Lanvin): This look is both simple and fashion-forward. Not only is the Grecian dress to die for, literally, but it's styled beautifully. The bold statement necklace plus the chained heels? To good for words: the chains in the statement necklace works perfectly with the bold shoes. The down- do makes this looks relaxed.   (Photo Cred)

At the 2010 (Versace): This blush tone looks absolutely incredible with her skin ton. The ruffles  are so stunning, which prevents Demi from being washed out. The silver jewel also perfectly complements the monochromatic look. The super elegant hair counteracts the complexity of this dress. Divine. (Photo Cred)

At the No Strings Attached Premiere (Carven): I love this alternative spin on a LBD and it is fabulously styled. The black heels and sophisticated hair looks awesome with the futuristic zipper. The hem-length is modest, but still shows her killer bod. .(Photo Cred)

At the GI Jane Premiere in 1997: This look is so timeless I'm obsessed. The cut and silhouette is so flattering and this look's simplicity allows her inner beauty to shine through.  She could even wear this dress today- but shouldn't because it'd be awkward to bring it back- and it'd be stellar. (Photo Cred)

At the 1997 Oscars: Can we say a precursor to Spring 2011 RTW Armani Prive? The silhouette is so fabulous and I love the shimmer. The minimal jewels allows the main focus to be on this dress. Beautfiul (Photo Cred)

The Weekly

• Kate Moss at the 24 Hours Prada Museum: I'm a sucker for fur and Kate Moss always rocks fur perfectly. She's capable of making fur look young and hip, which is what we should all aspire to do with our fur. There's something about the two-toned dress that makes this fur work better with this look. At the wavy hair? The perfect finishing touch. 
• Blake Lively at the Jason Wu for Target launch (Jason Wu): Two of my favorite fashion fanatics rolled into one look? Incredible. I love how Blake kept this look rather simple with minimal jewels and elegant hair. Peplums are so big right now and in this case, it definitely spices up a traditional black and white look. So does the subtle printed heels. 
• Katherine Heigl at the One for the Money premiere in New York (Herve. L Leroux); Lady in red! This dress is so flattering on her and makes her look like a timeless movie star. Although she didn't incorporate a lot of jewels, the asymmetrical dress ads the perfect amount of drama to this look.
• Angelina Jolie at the Producers' Guild Awards (Michael Kors): This is such a major fashion moment. I love lace, as most of you should know by now. The combination of lace sleeves and a high slit makes this look fashion-forward and age appropriate. I'm glad she kept this look monochromatic: this look wouldn't be classic with a pop of color.

So ladies and gent, the SAG awards are on tonight! I'm so excited to watch them and report back right here.  Unlike the Golden Globes, I'm thinking column silhouettes , fun prints, and pops of color. On the beauty front, I'm also hoping for stellar cat eyes or a fabulous lip. What are your fashion predictions?

The Style Files: How Lovely to Be a Woman

STYLE-SPIRATION:

While other little girls were obsessing over Teletubbies,  I loved old school musicals. Grease, Grease 2, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,  and Bye Bye Birdie. I would dance around my kitchen and sing the Conrad Birdie fan club song- seriously, there are videos- and idolize Ann Margret's character, Kim MacAfee, to no extent.  I wished I was a superstar like Ann Margret so much that my mom rented Viva Las Vegas and I loved that too.



Years later,  as I shed my theatrical ways and change into a chicer suit, I realized just how glamorous Ann Margaret was in those movies. So for this week, I wanted to honor Ann Margret's fabulousity era. I guess it's not her style, but it's definitely style-spiration!

I don't know when, where, or even why this happened; however, one should never ever underestimate the power of fur.  In my mind, this look epitomizes chic glamour of the mid 20th century. The hat, even though it is somewhat silly, is very high fashion of that time. And the coat? To die for. Fur is the most perfect way to instantly glam an outfit.  Even if you are afraid to rock a whole fur jacket, a fur vest would be absolutely sick! There's something so beautiful and understated about the glamour of this time period that I really miss. Nowadays, a fur jacket would be nice but there'd need to be a way to make it more unique; I know I'm guilty of that mentality all of the time. From "A Lot of Livin'" in Bye Bye Birdie. I've always been such a fan of this look,ever since I was young. In the movie, this is her "rebel without a cause" phase and I just love how something "rebellious" can be so chic! From a fashion viewpoint,  I love how she stays monochromatic, but experiments with the ruffled top. I love the crop top and high waisted pant: you exposure just the right amount of skin without being too outwardly sexual. If you want to try a monochromatic look, take a tip from Ann and show off a little bit of skin to avoid making it look like a jumpsuit.  Also, if you want to dance, wear something with fringe and ruffles: it's super fun! Just riding some motorcycles with Elvis in Viva Las Vegas. I now pronounce Ann Magret "The Mast of All Crop Tops." What I love about this look is that it's not "matchy matchy." It's almost like sailor girl with a splash of fabulous, which I love a lot! In all of these looks from Ann Margret's past, the stylists and costume designers understand the beauty of simplifying clothing. This sounds a bit hypocritical because I could accessorize and re-accessorize my outfits all day long; however, I think it's important to know when to keep a look simple...sometimes. THE WEEKLY:

• Blake Lively at the BAFTA Brits to Watch Gala (Chanel): I love this look because it truly is different than the typical "tight-silhouette get-up" she normally wears.  To me, this is the epitome of comfortable chic. The loose cut is perfect for the summertime because who really wants to wear a tight fitting outfit in the middle of the summer? Not me! The beautiful embellishments on the top and bottom of the dress gives it that Chanel flair and perfect for a gala.  And let's be honest, I'm always a sucker for asymmetrical lines.  The tan skins and beach blonde hair also gives this look the ultimate summer vibe. Ugh, she fails to disappoint me.
• Monica Pean at the "Can't Fake Fashion' Launch (Not Available): I love this look because it truly epitomizes personal style. While many would think that the awesome barrel bag she's rocking would be the focal point of the look, it's really not. Instead, your eye literally moves all around.  It doesn't try to look like style or another: it's her style. And her hair and makeup combination is quite bland, but let's the eye focus in on her creative look.  If you really want to mix up inspirations, I would definitely suggest taking a page out of Pean's book and sticking with a neutral palette. Brights and funky combinations would be too overbearing. Also, can we stop to notice the girl in the back's sinister face? It cracked me up! 
• Just some Olsen sisters, even the mystery sister,  launching The Row bags (a slew of designers): Well Elizabeth Olsen has a lot to learn from her two fashionista sisters, but I understand her sleek black and white combination; it would've looked better with a nude or white tank underneath. But back to the looks I loved. In my mind, Mary Kate and Ashley can barely do no wrong. Even when they wore completely oversized looks, they have always stayed true to themselves and are evolving fashionistas, which is crucial. They have fabulous taste and know what looks good on them. These light colors were so pretty and looked stunning with both of their long blonde locks. Mary Kate's blue mini was super fun but impressively professional. I loved her almost monochromatic look and the black strapped heels tied the whole look together and gave it a serious foundation. Ashley's dress was absolutely divine: the bangles were great but I'm glad she didn't stack up the bracelets as much as Mary Kate or else it would've been too overbearing. Even though I may have styled this dress with a solid pump, her strappy heels give this look a very dainty feel, which is perfect for the summer!

The Style Files: Legends of the Often Forgotten Gossip Girl

This summer, my friends and I have been obsessed with seeing every movie in theaters, basically. Just this week ,we  saw Larry Crowne -don't see it unless you're retired- and the ever-so-youthful Monte Carlo. While sitting in the movie theater, cooing at its predictability, I could not get over how stellar Leighton Meester's wardrobe was in the movie. You would think that Selena Gomez, being the star and all, would roam around Europe in fabulous clothes. Instead, she looked like your average teenager; Leighton really stole  the stage.

I feel in love with Meester's look above. A peach dress is extremely difficult for many to pull off; however, she does it with such glamour. The olive belt really breaks up the peach, which ultimately helps this look. Can we say "Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday?" Even in Gossip Girl, she always scores the best looks. Eric Daman always styles Blake Lively so she looks sexy, but Leighton Meester always looks classy and  chic: Daman presents the women we all-secretly-want to be in the form of a petite brunette fashionista.

In fact, it's almost bothersome how Leighton Meester doesn't get enough credit for her daring looks. Don't get me wrong, I love Blake Lively's style and the fact she doesn't have a stylist is incredible; however, Leighton Meester is always innovative and, as a result, she always receives negative press for her choices. In an angry fury, I've decided to finally give Leighton Meester some of the style credit she deserves. Sure she has a plethora of fashion faux paus, but nobody can neglect the fact that she has the guts to try looks that very few would try.

The Met Ball circa 2009: This is going to be a challenge to defend, but I'm up for it. I'm going to be honest with you: this is a terrible look for the red carpet, much better on the runway. However, this look is fun and creative enough for the MET Ball. I've said this before and I'll say forevermore, the MET Ball is all about creativity, innovation,  and making fashion fun. Meester did exactly that at the MET Ball but, as a result, gets negative press for it. I understand why mainstream media wouldn't be crazy about this look since it is, well, weird; however, she's doing something nobody else- except for Lady Gaga- would do. Yes, she may not rock every single look, she has a consistent fearlessness that's inspiring. (Photo Cred)

Meester at an American Ballet Company Gala: This isn't typical Meester style but I  still love it. This chocolate Valentino is such a beautiful alternative to overrated black. I love the draping and the effortless sleeves. She spiced this look up just right with that embellished clutch. LOVE. Her hair and makeup looks incredible also, but when do I not say that? Anyways, I love how she knows what kind of look is appropriate at different occasions, which I admire. This look also proves how versatile her looks can be. Sometimes I feel like we get the same thing over and over with Blake Lively: something that shows off her body, beach waves for hair, and a light lip and a smoky eye for makeup. With Leighton; however, we can constantly ask ourselves, "What is she going to wear?" And that's what fashion is about: anticipating the unexpected. I'm making a lot of fashion generalizations in this blog, but I hope they can serve as some source of inspiration. (Photo Cred)

Leighton out and about:  What I love about this look is how it's both attainable and very fashion forward. The sheer playsuit is super fun, especially for the summer or even the fall; however, it's nothing  unattainable. I'm sure we could all find a piece like this at Urban Outfitters or  Topshop. While I think the while bag isn't great with this, I would personally opt for a cross-body satchel,  I love the mustardish gold heels with this playsuit: it adds instant glam without overbearing. Obviously, celebrities aren't going to be dressed in haute-couture as they run errands, but Leighton looks just as fabulous in her street style! I'm sorry, but when do we ever see Blake Lively in street clothes? Hardly ever.  (Photo Cred)

Leighton at the Fall 2010 Couture Chanel show: The greatest thing about the fashion industry is the incessant ned for  rule-breaking.  The mix of the toughie-leather dress- Chanel, I presume-with that beautifully glamourous necklace is such a rule breaker. Where's the consistency? Nowhere, but I love it. I know that  I can never define my personal style in a simple word or phrase, so I love how she's admitting, "I can't either, but that's okay" with this outfit. Not to mention that I love the half up and the smokey eyes!   (Photo Cred)


Writing this post made be upset for Leighton Meester. Why doesn't she have an in with Anna Wintour? Why doesn't she have a contract with Chanel? Though I must say those pictures are beyond gorgeous. And Why doesn't Leighton Meester get to stroll around with Christian Louboutin? I do like Blake Lively; however, sometimes, life just isn't fair.

Well on that depressing note, onto the weekly!

THE WEEKLY:

• Anne Hathaway at the Valentino Couture Show (Valentino): Call me crazy, but there's something about this look that I really like, which is weird because I usually hate those sheer dresses. I think it's the subtle polka dot design that makes transparency less offensive While I think the brooch looks kind of dumb on the dress, I do think that the other styling tactics make you forget about the sheer dress: the casual waves and girly makeup take the focus away from the skirt of the dress and aim it more towards the face. The matching black pumps makes this look more seamless, as if Anne is saying, "Yes, my dress is sheer but just focus on the look as a whole." I think adding a long necklace would give this dress a cool vintage look, and it would also incorporate more jewels, but the chained bag is pretty cool with it too and gives the same kind of vibe. If this look didn't have that "old school" vintage vibe, I would probably hate it. But, due to the dainty polka dots and the bags, makes me think that everyone should respect this look more, which I guess isn't the most logical opinion, but let's roll with it. See, guys, it really wasn't that bad!
• Emma Watson at the tearful Harry Potter premiere (Oscar de la Renta): I, being not a Potter fanatic, heard the premiere was happening and decided to check out pictures from it. When I saw this look, my jaw literally dropped and let out a huge "ohmygod." Then I frantically texted my friend, Deb, an extreme Potter fan,  and told her I loved the dress. This look was literally heaven on the red carpet. I really hope you don't think I'm being dramatic, because I'm not. It was really that amazing. The detailing and the color scheme was so majestic and the perfect thing for Emma to wear to such an epic premiere. It fit her like a glove and was just as whimsy as the whole Potter industry. The sleek hair is the perfect foil to the uber-dramatic dress and the makeup is girly and fresh. Although I wish she had a cocktail ring or a simple bracelet on, nobody can deny this look is awesome. More than awesome, perfect.
• Pippa Middleton strolling around Londontown (a plethora of designers): Whenever I see pictures of the Royal family, the outfits are so manicured and, well, perfect. I know that Pippa's place in the Royal- doesn't it seem like royal should be capitalized- family isn't as prominent as Catherine's, but I'm so thrilled that she is rocking such a cool and casual look. It humanizes her, which I love. As  for the look, very summertime-toughie chic! The leather jacket paired with the printed dress is perfect for the summer time. Matching it with black flats, instead of sandals, gives the look a polished appearance without looking too mature. It's an eclectic look; however, it also effortlessly flows as a cohesive look. Love! 

Well, that was a lot of fun. While writing this, I got an awesome new idea for another post so I'll be writing again soon!

The Weekly: Having Fun Kiddies?

So a few days ago, I finally watched Valley of the Dolls. It has always been quite popular in the fashion world and, after seeing it for myself, I can totally understand why. I'm so smitten with that movie. First of all, I'm obsessed with celebrity train wrecks; I'm currently watching Dirt and that's so addicting. But let's talk about the fashion in this movie. Literally, to die for. It is the epitome of mod-glam. Since this movie is so old, there's hardly any good pictures depicting the awesome fashion, so I'll just show you the trailer:

I don't think anyone will understand my infatuation with this movie until you see it for yourself- instant play on Netflix- so I am very sorry for the lack of material. What I love most about this movie's costumes, as well as the time period in general, is the combination of simplicity and drama. There weren't many prints, the craftsmanship on all of these pieces were incredible. Some were adorned with sequins, fur, and lace, which I obviously love. Sometimes, I feel like the minimalist-istas were heavily inspired from the simplicity of the sixties, but took it way to far and made it boring.

Actually, parts of Chanel's 2011 Resort reminds me of some of the looks in Valley of the Dolls. Even though I didn't love this collection, I did think that some pieces had a good mixture of simplicity and drama.

The color really imitates the time period, while the draping on the sleeve gave this skirt suit some more pizazz!

Without the pant, the drama of the skirt mixed with the simplicity of the black and white is so Valley of the Dolls.

William Travilla (the costume designer) did an incredible job evolving each character's style throughout the movie. When we originally meet Neely O'Hara, her clothes were rather simple: leggings and a cardigan here or there. She wears a cherry red turtle neck with some layered necklaces when she sings for a radio station. As she gets more glamorous and more detrimental, she sports a luxe leopard jacket as well as a red scarf wrapped around her head.  At the pinnacle of  her demise, Neely was completely titled "hot-mess," with her lace bra and slit skirt.  Through his costumes, Travilla makes the demise of each woman more real. Please please rent this movie and appreciate the art!

And now, onto the weekly!

Emma Roberts at the Pirates of the Caribbean in LA (Stella McCartney and Dana Rebecca): Sometimes I forget that Emma Roberts was in the show, Unfabulous, or that she is Julia Robert's niece. Instead, Emma Roberts is shaping up to be her own starlet, with an incredible emerging style. I think she's making that transition into adulthood and I think she's handling it beautifully. Exhibit A? This look. The LBD with the statement necklace was fun, but definitely sophisticated and older. The white clutch made sense and added some much needed funk. Love it!

Blake Lively at the Chanel Resort Show (Chanel and Christian Louboutin): Although I'm not a big fan of her new hair hue, I am so smitten with this outfit. Wearing sequins in the day is something I think is risque but, when worn appropriately, is awesome. What makes this leggy look good was how she did not experiment with colors, just texture. Even her animal skin pumps are a neutral, which continue to elongate the leg. I'm also glad she didn't over-accessorize: the necklace and the brooch were just perfect. Ugh, she's always so good.

Rachel McAdams at the Midnight in Paris Premiere (Maxime Simeons): There's only one word I can use to accurately describe this look: pretty. It's just so feminine which, regardless of what's "trendy," I always love. I love how she kept the look light with the nude Ferragamo pumps; however, the rosettes as well as the bright pink lip gave this look the appropriate "pop." I do wish that she had a messy updo though. Regardless, she looks amazing.

Sarah Jessica Parker at a Ballet Gala (Valentino): Is it really weird that I like this a lot? I know that granny-style isn't the most flattering, but I think the form fitting Valentino is a great contrast to the granny lace attire. The slightly messy updo and cross- body bag also made this casual. I know most people hated it, and  I really tried to, but I just can't. I think that Sarah Jessica Parker has a really good eye and I think that she successfully mixes a bunch of outfits. I don't care what people say,  Sarah Jessica, bravo! 

Rachel McAdams at another Midnight in Paris Premiere (Marchesa):  This Marchesa is one of those situations that are incredible runway pieces; however, very hard to make a good red carpet look. But, through minimal jewels and soft waves, McAdams totally rocked this. The pointed gold heels also made this less ice skater princess and more old school glamour. The minimal makeup also made viewers think of this dress as art instead of a costume. I think that was the key to this look: old school glamour. I am, however, extremely interested on how this dress would look with a modern edge (sleek ponytail and a dramatic eye).

It's official, she is the luckiest girl on the planet. I don't really have anything else to say about this matter, just that I'm extremely jealous. Since I frequent talk about my love/hate relationship with Blake Lively, I thought this would be appropriate. And in terms of the Chanel ad, I like it: the asymmetrical composition is interesting and let's be honest, she looks fabulous.

I think they are pretty cool! Let's pair these with black jeans, a white tee, and a grey scarf? It's the perfect accessory for menswear!  And who doesn't love cool shoes? Nobody. My friend would also like to tell everyone that he is a size 9, if anyone is feeling generous.

The Weekly: That You Found a Girl and You're Married Now

This weekend has been a wedding filled weekend. Because spring break is SO close, some of my lovely ladies and I have taken the weekend to do some homework. Fortunately for us, but unfortunately for our homework, we continued to be distracted by Say Yes to the Dress  and My Best Friend's Wedding. Consequently, I began thinking about something that will be life defining: my wedding dress. I have no desire to get married right now, but in terms of the wedding dress, why start early? This post isn't going to turn into "these are the wedding dresses I like", but I've devised a few do's and don'ts of the wedding ensemble.

But I will say that this dress is gorgeous:

1. DO NOT add color to your wedding dress: Unless you plan on polygamy or a divorce, this is your only wedding. Keep it classic and keep it white (or some shade of off-white).
2. DO allow your bridesmaids to look fabulous: I'm a really big fan of keeping your bridal party in the same color, but different dresses. If someone has to put up with your bridezilla ways, it's the least you can do! It's also like you have a fashion strutting down the aisle, which is my dream wedding.
3. DO NOT wear a short dress (unless it's your second wedding): Let's be honest, do you frequently wearing fabulous evening gowns? No! So why would you let the opportunity pass? That's just silly!
4. DO splurge (if you are financially able): Not only is this a once in a lifetime dress, but you want to make sure that it is made well. How embarrassing would a wardrobe malfunction be as you're throwing the bouquet?
5. DO make sure the bodice is form fitting: Whether you're opting for the princess skirt or a mermaid silhouette, you want to show off your bridal bod! Your dress should be ill-fitting and, depending on where the skirt begins, a fitted bodice will be flattering on all! 
6. DO NOT settle for something that's just okay or ugly: This is your big day and you should love it more than your husband...kidding! 

Okay so enough of the sub-par introduction and now onto the Weeklies! 

• Tom Ford at the Vanity Fair After Party (I would assume Tom Ford): Fabulous. Can any man dress better than Tom Ford? I really don't think so.  I love the mixture of velvet and a regular tuxedo. The dark blue velvet is blue enough to look fashion forward, but dark enough to look classy. The proportion of the bow-tie is also spot on. It was clownish but not too small, which I loved. And the boutineer on the lapel is so adorable. Ugh, I just love him! He's so cute.
• Rosario Dawson at the same After Party (Diane von Furstenberg):  Love the dress' blue, I bought a dress from Topshop that's a similar blue! I think this dress is the perfect thing to wear to an Oscars After Party. The sparkles and length of the dress scream "classy", but the sexy slit and the relaxed silhouette screams "casual chic." I think her casual look was really cool and I'm glad she didn't stack on the jewels. I like how the hair was clean and slick, which was a perfect counter to the dress' silhouette. Also, I really loved the purple-grey shoes with the dress: it served as a neutral, which  made the main focus the dress. As it should be.
• Nicole Richie at the Elton John After Party (Halston Heritage): So sleek and sexy, which I am obsessed with.  The slits in her dress was mixed perfectly with the- dare I compliment minimalism- minimal silhouette and the long sleeves. The dramatic lip was also really striking and chic with pure white. The hoop earrings also made this edgy dress look retro, which is so Nicole Richie. I just love her and her dress.
• Blake Lively being trendy (Chanel): She has a way of always making it on my Weeklies.  Only Blake could make this all white ensemble look non-bridal. Overall, it's a really ethereal look: the messy hair, the ruffles on the dress. What I loved most about this look was the pop of color (aka the emerald earrings). I really believe that she could wear a garbage bag and be mistaken for wearing couture.

The Weekly: If You Can Go Downtown With a Girl Like Me

Once upon a time, I used to think that Rihanna was such a fashion icon: she had the perfect blend of edge and style to make her something really special. But things changed. Yes this is going to be a ranting blog. I just don't understand, what happened to Rihanna's style. Of course everyone feels for her Chris Brown tragedy; however, her fashion sense is starting to scare me.  Remember when she looked so amazing?

I loved when she wore this Zac Posen at the 2008 Grammy Awards. The color was so stunning and the knee length hem was genuinely fascinating. I remember it was back then when I thought to myself, "Self, Rihanna is going to be a fashion icon."

But let's fast-foward to NOW.

I'm totally all for being an original for fashion, but there's a fine line between "individuality" and "costume frenzy" and Rihanna has totally crossed it. I don't know who made this dress and quite frankly, I don't want to know. All of these bright colors, mixed with her clownish red hair makes her look ridiculous in my opinion.  She has such potential: WHAT WENT WRONG?! This also brings up another question: what exactly does it take to become a fashion icon in contemporary society? Do you have to dress too insane, a la Gaga and Rihanna, or can you dress with taste and be considered iconic?

I don't really have an answer, but just a cute little thought!

• Rosamund Pike at the 2011 BAFTA Awards (McQueen): Here's an upcoming trend for you: wearing incredible McQueen prints on the red carpet. You would think that a blonde wearing a yellow dress would be way to much yellow, but the different shades made this monochromatic look tres chic! Her wavy hair made this look so ethereal and awesome.  And the natural browns she used for her belts and bracelets added to this ethereal look. I actually liked the red carpet interpretation much better than the runway look because I was too focused on the belt and bangles, though the silver leaf look is so cool.
• Gemma Arterton at the 2011 BAFTA Awards (Yves Saint Laurent):  I thought this dress was super fun, like a modern take on Marilyn's "Diamonds" dress. Periwinkle and black is such a stunning and sophisticated color duo, which is even better by mixing fabrics. I'm glad that she toned down the accessories and focused more on eye-popping makeup. The bright red lip is so elegant and perfectly fits this chic Parisian look. LOVING IT.
• Blake Lively at a Van Cleef&Arpels Party (Marchesa): Once again, Blake Lively is the best dressed at a party, shocking! Is anyone starting to sense my eternal jealousy? If anyone else were to try and pull off this Marchesa, I would probably really hate it. But Blake knows how to wear such a complex dress and make it look effortless and incredible: nude heels and no jewels. Her slightly messy hair also makes this outfit work. Ugh,  I wish I was her.

The Weekly: We Make the Hipsters Fall in Love

So my friend and I have a new obsession: HIPSTER HEADBANDS. Now you may be wondering, what's a hipster? Better yet, what's a hipster headband? Well, ladies and gents, this is a Hipster:

I think if your hair looks really really awesome, this can look awesome. I think it also depends on what kind of headband you wear: thin versus thick, sparkly versus plain, material, etc. I think if you want to perfect this look, reference the lovely Nicole Richie or refer to a Free People lookbook. Whatever the case is, the look must be consistent!! If you're going for a Hipster/Indie look, follow it through! Don't be a weenie!

Fall 2011 has been interesting thus far, I can't wait to share my views on it!  And in terms of the Grammys tonight...anything really goes. It's the Grammys!

But for now...onto the weeklies! 

• Blake Lively at AmfAR NYC Gala (McQueen): AWESOME. I don't think Miss Lively has worn McQueen yet, but it suits her well! Alexander McQueen, the designer and the brand, has been so avant garde, and so special that having relaxed hair and makeup is the perfect juxtaposition. The coloring is sick and the minimal jewels are the perfect match to this outfit. Love love LOVE.
• Nicole Richie at a Bergdorf Goodman Bash (Roland Mouret and House of Harlow): So fierce. Let's be honest, when do we ever see Nicole Richie in a fitted outfit? This outfit is super sleek and the new toned look is something new. I think what really makes this outfit, for me, is the super awesome House of Harlow accessories. She looks absolutely fabulous!
• Renee Zellweger at the Golden Camera Awards (Carolina Herrera): Obsessed. She looks like a fashion goddess. This grey looks so amazing with her pale skin and blonde hair. I wish she had better accessories though. But we never really see Zellweger rocking the red carpet, so this was a nice change!
• Natalie Portman at the Oscars luncheon (Lanvin): It might just be this angle, but it barely even looks like she's pregnant! The blue and pink is such a striking color combination. She's been all for these color combinations which is really fashion forward of her. I cannot wait to see what she'll be rocking in two weeks!
• Selena Gomez at the Never Say Never Premiere (Reem Acra): Why is she the most perfect person ever? As always, Selena Gomez looks fabulous. She looks like an uber fierce greek goddess and that purple is stunning on her.  I love the sparkly heels to mix it up and hair and makeup...ugh, she's perfection!

The Weekly: Let's Reflect

 First thing's first.

Happy New Year!

I hope that everyone had a fun and safe holiday that will be followed by a year of laughter, health, and fabulousity.

I had a whole list of looks that I thought were good  this week but, due to the technological hardships we are facing in Londontown, I decided to do a list of the best of the best. My favorite fashionistas, who were seen in my weeklies,  and what I think should be in store for them in the new year. 

So let's get this started, yes?

Claire Danes has been doing some great stuff this year. What I love most about her looks is that she can do a range. She can rock a soft and classic  Armani Prive, but can go toughie and innovative in Burberry. She is such a blank slate and looks gorgeous no matter what. Though I'm a big fan of accessories, I think the fabrics of these dresses are so intense that a plethora of jewels would ruin it. In the future, I would love to see Danes experiment more with silhouettes; differences in volume and length would totally spice up her wardrobe. Maybe something like this Lanvin? With that in mind, let her pile on  the jewels!

Regardless of some of her mistakes, I do love Diane Kruger. Unlike so many celebrities of our day, she always dressy trendalicious and classy.I enjoy how she actually seems to care about what she wears; she's been spotted at Chanel resort shows! Though some of her looks may not make the best dressed lists, she always take risks. What kind of person can go from Jason Wu, to Chanel, to Vuitton in just a few months (from classic, to feminie and chic, to trendy, respectively)? Diane Kruger can. And the best part is, all three of those looks are so effortless on her! Diane Kruger, oh yes she's a muse to the (insert style here) look. It's cliche, but I have no critiques, just keep doing what you're doing. While it'd be great to have more commercial hits, she's taking risks and they definitely speak more to the fashion-inclined.

Emma Watson and Emma Roberts are the two best dressed Emma's in Hollywood. What I love best about their two styles, is how they're aging with grace and class. Some celebrities channel their inner Miley Cyrus to show off their womanhood, but these ladies use their class to show that they are better than the others. Watson's incredible white Burberry to show off a mature side of her and Roberts keeps it young but appropriately sexy in Julien Macdonald. The only improvements these two ladies can do is keep growing into their style. Though this look is great for their age, I think that both of them should begin to grow into some minimalist looks. Maybe some Calvin Klein with major statement pieces?



Without a doubt, Blake Lively is probably the biggest fashion icon of this decade. The new face of Chanel bags? Getting shoes named after her by Louboutin? Sitting next to Anna Wintour during fashion shows. Trust me, I read the articles! It's just enough to be threatened by any aspiring fashionista. But, to give her credit, she does have a smashing sense of style.  My favorite part about Blake Lively's look is how she self-styles herself. You rarely see that anymore, which makes me respect her a lot. She knows just how to rock a Marchesa with the perfect amount of accessories , for example. That takes skill! Every look of hers is very different which, considering she doesn't have a stylist, is a lot of work so you must give her credit for that as well. In the next year, I think she should start to be more sophisticated with her fashion. She tends to show a lot of cleavage which isn't necessary, she should focus on her great taste!


And Kate Hudson is utterly fabulous. Do I love her because I love her movies? Or because of her personality? Or because Rachel Zoe styles her? I'll never know BUT she's done some amazing things this year.  What I think is great about Kate is that she can make even the most atraditional dress classy and chic. I mean...we never see her in a full skirted gown, do we? Nope! And that's because she does what's current. Like the Pucci she wore at the SAG Awards. Honestly, who else would be able to pull that off? And the Lanvin she wore at the 2010 Glamour Woman of the Year  was, once again, extremely atypical but it  worked for her and it was quite fabulous.  I think it would be interesting in 2011 to see Hudson wear some typically feminine pieces, maybe some De la Renta. Just think, how random, confusing, and ultimately fabulous would that be?!
