Style Files: And We Will Float Above the Rift

Everyone has a mojo-less week every now and then. The Shins' "Simple Song" is my personal  musical medication for a mojo-less week. Maybe it's the beat or maybe the lyrics, but I'm loving it. Alright, enough with this potentially depressing introduction, le's get right into the action, shall we?

The Style Files: Demi Moore

Unless you've been living under a celebrity-gossip rock, you'll know about Demi Moore's terrifying rush to the hospital. I listened to the 911 call a couple of days ago and it was so scary. To show my support for Team Demi, this style-spiration goes out to her. I love Demi's style- even pre-Rachel Zoe- because she dresses for her age. At the same time, Demi also allows her clothes to show off her timeless beauty. 

At the 2009 Freedom Awards (Lanvin): This look is both simple and fashion-forward. Not only is the Grecian dress to die for, literally, but it's styled beautifully. The bold statement necklace plus the chained heels? To good for words: the chains in the statement necklace works perfectly with the bold shoes. The down- do makes this looks relaxed.   (Photo Cred)

At the 2010 (Versace): This blush tone looks absolutely incredible with her skin ton. The ruffles  are so stunning, which prevents Demi from being washed out. The silver jewel also perfectly complements the monochromatic look. The super elegant hair counteracts the complexity of this dress. Divine. (Photo Cred)

At the No Strings Attached Premiere (Carven): I love this alternative spin on a LBD and it is fabulously styled. The black heels and sophisticated hair looks awesome with the futuristic zipper. The hem-length is modest, but still shows her killer bod. .(Photo Cred)

At the GI Jane Premiere in 1997: This look is so timeless I'm obsessed. The cut and silhouette is so flattering and this look's simplicity allows her inner beauty to shine through.  She could even wear this dress today- but shouldn't because it'd be awkward to bring it back- and it'd be stellar. (Photo Cred)

At the 1997 Oscars: Can we say a precursor to Spring 2011 RTW Armani Prive? The silhouette is so fabulous and I love the shimmer. The minimal jewels allows the main focus to be on this dress. Beautfiul (Photo Cred)

The Weekly

• Kate Moss at the 24 Hours Prada Museum: I'm a sucker for fur and Kate Moss always rocks fur perfectly. She's capable of making fur look young and hip, which is what we should all aspire to do with our fur. There's something about the two-toned dress that makes this fur work better with this look. At the wavy hair? The perfect finishing touch. 
• Blake Lively at the Jason Wu for Target launch (Jason Wu): Two of my favorite fashion fanatics rolled into one look? Incredible. I love how Blake kept this look rather simple with minimal jewels and elegant hair. Peplums are so big right now and in this case, it definitely spices up a traditional black and white look. So does the subtle printed heels. 
• Katherine Heigl at the One for the Money premiere in New York (Herve. L Leroux); Lady in red! This dress is so flattering on her and makes her look like a timeless movie star. Although she didn't incorporate a lot of jewels, the asymmetrical dress ads the perfect amount of drama to this look.
• Angelina Jolie at the Producers' Guild Awards (Michael Kors): This is such a major fashion moment. I love lace, as most of you should know by now. The combination of lace sleeves and a high slit makes this look fashion-forward and age appropriate. I'm glad she kept this look monochromatic: this look wouldn't be classic with a pop of color.

So ladies and gent, the SAG awards are on tonight! I'm so excited to watch them and report back right here.  Unlike the Golden Globes, I'm thinking column silhouettes , fun prints, and pops of color. On the beauty front, I'm also hoping for stellar cat eyes or a fabulous lip. What are your fashion predictions?

The Weekly: The Stylish Life of a Hugh Hefner Wannabe

As cliche as it sounds, the Hamptons does have fabulous stores. When my friends and I drove through Easthampton, my jaw literally dropped: Malandrino, Tiffany&Co., Tahari, and many more. Seriously, the epitome of fabulous living. While typical Hampton vacationers go to these luxe stores and buy whatever their hearts desire, I did not. Instead, I went to a funky vintage store in Bridgehampton (I think Bridgehampton, if not, I'm incredibly sorry and purchased a smoker's jacket. No, I do not smoke; Yes, I did actually buy a smoker's jacket. The only male friend on the vacation tried on the smoker's jacket, quickly discarding it because he thought he looked silly; however, I tried it on and loved it instantly. A smoker's jacket is, in my mind, one of those really obscure pieces that nobody ever really purchases. Unless you're willing to take the risk of a "what-was-she-or-he-thinking-moment."

Robe? I think this would even look good belted. Innovation is key here, people! 

 And believe me, I faced one of those the second I got home:

MOM: And you got a smoker's jacket? 

         ME: Yeah, let me show you! I love it 

(Pulling my beloved smoker's jacket out of the bag)

        MOM: You...bought a robe. I hate this.

My own mother, who is chic, despised this piece! Instinctively, I started to wonder if I made a really stupid purchase. But then I realized that I didn't care if anyone, even my mom,  hated this smoker's jacket or claimed it was a Hugh Hefner moment because  I  love it and I see so much potential in this piece.

Obsessed with the detailing! 

Here's what I'm thinking:

- Nix the belt (it'll look cuter like a jacket a la Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex and the City).

-Wear with ripped jeans, black jeans, or even a cute dress

-I'm not sure what kind of  shoe (at first I was thinking about a strong boot but I'm not sure) but I'll get back to you on that.

I guess what I'm trying to say in the grand scheme of things is that we all need to stay tough and true to our personal styles. I know that conforming to the masses, or what other influencers think is chic, can be easy, but fashion's no fun that way. To me, fashion is nothing without originality and fearlessness.  If we lived in a world where everyone wore the same exact thing, that'd be a pretty boring world, don't you think? 

Well, that was inspiring. Now, onto the weekly!

• Demi Moore at the Samsung Hope for Children Gaga (Louis Vuitton): In my weeklies, I frequently condone celebrities for maintaining chic status while staying true to their true age. This is no exception. First of all, I really think Demi gets better with age and I'm always dumbfounded by her effortless beauty.  Anyways, back to the look! I love juxtaposition between the plunging neckline and the long hemline. It's "I still got it" meets "I do act my age, I'm a lady!," which I greatly admire. I also love the detailing around the neck, sheared fabric I believe? And the sequined bits on her skirt look so fabulous. You know a dress is incredible when, even in black, you can spot all of the fabulous effort that was put into the creation. Her semi-pulled back hair gives that same combination of youthful and age appropriate. The drop earrings complement the previously discussed sequins, which makes this a complete look. Also, I love how she wore a bold strappy heel. A pump, the obvious contender, would be to matronly and an elegant evening shoe would've been too fancy. Overall, she looked incredible! 
• Kate Middleton at the Ark gala (Jenny Packham):  I'm so pleased to see that her Sarah Burton wedding dress wasn't the golden age of her style. Many of you may have seen this Jenny Packham dress on Leighton Meester during an episode of Gossip Girl and no offense Erik Daman, but I love this dress so much better on Kate Middleton because of the styling!  Meester's hair is overbearing in the Gossip Girl adaptation, as opposed to Middleton's sleek hair. The dress has so much detail, an "piece of art" if you will, that it's better not to over accessorize. Middleton looks awesome because, in true Middleton style, she kept is classy and simple with minimal jewels, soft hair, and a small clutch. J'adore! 
• Elle Fanning at the Super 8 Premiere (Vintage): This is the epitome of boho chic and I love it. Everything about this is so soft and ethereal, which is key to successfully wearing a look like this. For starters, I love how she didn't feel inclined to wear some leading designer to her premiere, the vintage is amazing! Although I wish she wore some jewels, whether earrings or bangles, I do love silky smooth hair with this look. And the wooden platforms, or are they flatforms? Regardless, they really pull the look together and are awesome. Florence Welch, the reigning queen of this look,  must be so happy!

The Weekly: The Stars are Falling From the Sky

So a bunch of things happened this week. For example, I tried to make a mood board. It was my first time making a collage with that goal in mind. The whole look I was going for was hippie whimsy. I'm thinking lace, natural colors, and accessories galore.  One of my major sources is the new Free People catalog. I wish I had more time to complete it but so far, I'm loving it.

Next subject of business: I am such a Maxxinista at the moment. I could literally write a whole post about it but this is the weekly so I'll cut it short. At my local TJ Maxx, there's this "Runway" section and I've really gone all out; Halston, Ralph Lauren, Joe's, and the list continues. Yesterday, however, I bought the most fabulous faux fur ever.

Stop and observe the amazing-ness.

One of the best style tips is the up-scale/down-scale mix. Pair off a classy expensive piece with less expensive accessories.

And always do Faux Fur.

AND THE GLOBES ARE ON TONIGHT! The Golden Globes are my absolutely favorite award ceremony: I love the mix of television and film. Also, the less Oscar-worthy films are given a chance to win an award or two. I'm thinking tonight, we are going to see blush tones, asymmetrical shoulders and mullet hemlines. But more about that tomorrow! 

For now...onto the weekly! 

• Michelle Williams at the  New York Film Critic Circle Awards (Wren): I love this! You rarely see someone in a shirt and skirt combination anymore. But Williams did this in such a chic way it looks like a dress. I love the mixing of patterns in this intense; the two fabrics are different enough but the color scheme makes it work. I think everyone should try mixing patterns like Williams did because this is awesome! Here minimalistic jewels worked in this intense, I suppose, because the dress is so shiny. But I think a few bracelets would have looked really great. All in all, however, she looks fabulous.
• Demi Moore at the No Strings Attached Premiere (Carven): Without a doubt, Demi wears a lot of black; however, she always finds a way to make it new and exciting (a la Balmain and, in this case, Carven). The zippers on this dress is so amazing, I'm obsessed! She keeps spicing it up with adding the studded clutch. This is extremely appropriate because she's not a star of No Strings Attached, but she still looks absolutely incredible. In this case, I love how she kept it all black. Having a colored shoe or clutch would break it up too much a de-chic the outfit. She always looks absolutely  stunning.
• Ed Westwick frolicking (I have no idea): I love love love LOVE this indigo and black ensemble Ed Westwick is rocking. It's totally Chuck Bass, and how can you doubt Chuck Bass' incredible style? Oh that's right, you cant. His matching is impeccable but it's not irritating. He looks fabulously effortless, which I'm loving. I don't know really what to say, because I don't judge menswear all that much, but I love it when a guy puts effort into his outfits.
• Hilary Duff at a Kentucky Derby Prelude Party (Something sexy): Va va vroom!  Hillary Duff is definitely no longer Lizzie McGuire. I think I love this outfit so much is because it's so out of character. She'll usually wear something that much more demure. But she looks so sexy and is really embracing her youth, which I love. The whole outfit screams body-con but the mixing of fabrics really breaks that up and is uber flattering, instead of potentially scary (what I think of body con usually). Since she went sexy for this look, it was so smart how she showed off minimal skin. She's learning and growing as a fashionista, which I really appreciate.
• Natalie Portman at the 2011 Critic's Choice Awards (Gianfranco Ferre): FINALLY. Natalie Portman wears something pregnancy chic! I suppose comfort would be number one when dressing up, but her past outfits have been hideous. Thankfully, she pulled out something spectacular for the lacking Critic's Choice red carpet (I don't even want to speak about the looks). Black and white is always an extremely chic away to go and,because of her tiny frame, the volumized silhouette was flattering on her. She kept it clean and uber chic. Bravo, Natalie, welcome back to the world of fashion!

The Weekly: Spooktacular Fashions

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!! I do believe that Halloween has to be up there on an aspiring fashionista's list of favorite holidays! You  get to dress up...and who doesn't love dressing up?! Nobody. While I'd love to have my weekly based on Halloween costumes, I think I'll save that for later this week. But you can take a look at my fail of a pumpkin for now!

ANYWAYS! 

There were a lot of awesome costumes that I saw during this weekend: a plethora of Ke$has looking fabulous, one of my friends was  Antoine Dodson, lax bros (my roommie's personal fave).

I was personally PETRIFIED of this full on bunny costume:

Some top trends for costumes were "Risky Business Girls", nerds, and a plethora of other short skirt wearing outfits. I was a BALLER-ina one night and a mod/hippie/Edie Sedgwick/ London's sixties girl the other night, while my boyfriend was a Chilean Miner...yes...a Chilean Miner. My roommie was a cowgirl/ school-girl. Some of my other friends were hippies, Katy Perry, Pocahontas, police cops, pumpkins, greek goddesses, fairies, etc. All in all, it was a splendid weekend! 

NOW ONTO THE WEEKLY! 

• Demi Moore at the GQ Gentleman's Ball (Balmain): Love this Balmain!  I always am a fan of Balmain's interesting silhouettes and shapes (although some of them get a bit repetitive). Black and gold is such a chic color combination: it jazzes up what could potentially be gothic dress. Demi tends to wear a lot of black so the gold accents really helps it be a little bit out of her comfort zone. The tortoise clutch also gives it a little more ooomph: black would be too boring and gold would be too predictable. Tying it all together with some black heels and Ashton on her arm makes it a perfect outfit! 
• Keira Knightley at the Last Night Premiere (Valentino): I don't think I'd love this dress as much if Keira wasn't the one wearing it. But she does something to fashion that is so unexplainable but she, and whatever she's wearing, is always so effortless and beautiful. I loved all of the three dimensional aspects to this dress: I feel like she frequently wears simplistic outfits, but the semi- avant garde quality of this Valentino is refreshing! I do wish, however, she wore bright colors more frequently. Her paleness would make an awesome contrast with a cobalt blue or something.

SEASON THREE SEASON THREE

So the real question is,  what did I think of The Rachel Zoe's Project's season three premiere? I LOVED IT. Although Zoe can be a little bit eccentric, she never ceases to give me entertainment for an hour and inspiration that kick starts my crave to be a full fledged fashionista. Fashion-wise, I thought it was BAH-NAN-AS. I loved everything she wore: the red and black Chanel jacket with gold accessories to the max, all of those Chanel jackets she tried on (which were all spectacular), the navy bolero-ish jacket. AND THE DEMI COVER SHOOT. Turned out so well. If you look at some of the pictures, you have to agree that the outfit decisions just make sense in that not obvious way. My personal favorite is the one with the Russian dolls: the movement of the picture is just so interesting and that Jason Wu dress is so fun! My only complaint about the premiere, however, is all of the Taylor drama. I've disliked Taylor from the start of me watching TRZP. I can understand her frustration to have a better spot on the Zoe Team, but she wasn't grateful. There are plenty of people, me included, who would legitimately DIE to work with Zoe and be surrounded by amazing pieces. Good that she's gone! I feel bad for Rachel buuut she could do better. So yeah...I'm really excited for next week and this whole season!
