10 Best Looks from the 2015 Cannes Film Festival

As Cannes kindly reminds us every year, summer is way more glamorous than a pair of denim cutoffs, aviators and rubber flip flops. In fact, the fête du jour frowns up banished flats altogether. In true Cannes Film Festival manner, the red carpet looks did not disappoint. From formal showstoppers to casual--but equally chic--party and press outfits, check out the 10 best looks of the film (and fashion) extravaganza.



Diane Kruger in Prada: If any budding fashionista need guidance on having a personal style that is both feminine and edgy, look to Diane Kruger. Between utterly Parisian Chanel Haute Couture frocks to punchy Giambattista Valli prints, everything the German actress wears tickles the heart of all girly girls. This Prada gown is no exception. There's something insanely ethereal about the thougthful embellishments against a playfully sheer backdrop, and not to mention the dramatic back is undeniably regal. In true Kruger fashion, her subtly messy curls perfectly match the princessy vibe of this gown. But of course, leave it to the It-Girl to make even bedhead coveted.

 

Sophie Marceau in Alexander Vauthier: Far from the festival's riskiest look, the actress's fuss-free outfit offers a good lesson in easy summer dressing. Whether on red carpet or the boardwalk, a white shirtdress is the ultimate example of understated glamour. Yes, Marceau's take on this wardrobe staple is fancier than the top that also doubles as a cover-up, but the carefree sentiment is still strong. In general, the getup feels a little ho-hum; however, adding Chopard's snake necklace ups the sartorial ante. Polished off with a pair of gold gladiator sandals, Marceau looks more like an ultra chic Medusa (in a good way!) than an actress. Brava.

Cate Blanchett in Alexander McQueen: As any fashion girl (or guy) knows, the secret to sexy dressing is highlighting one body area and leaving much more to the imagination. This iteration is not as obvious as a plunging maxidress, but this Victorian alternative is undeniably sultry. Lesson to be learned: a sheer top and frills-free black bra does wonders, and isn't only appropriate for a night on the town. To prevent this look from getting too vampy, the Academy Award winner opts for smooth waves, a fresh face and minimal accessories.

Sienna Miller in Sonia Rykiel:  Once upon a time, the American Sniper star was known for two things: her rocky relationship with Jude Law and her perfectly boho style. Though Miller has made several movies since then, and seemingly ended her on-again-off-again relationship, who doesn't regularly nerd out over her style? Her clothes still have a hint of boho, but her overall style has received a major, sophisticated upgrade. There's something about this gothic look that almost veers into Stevie Nicks territory; however, the minimal jewels (besides that glitzy collar, of course) make this less costumey. Long story short: the drama of this ensemble is divine. Though the cape adds an air of mystery, the sheer skirt and starry embellishments keep this outfit fun and youthful. The juxtaposition between the beachy braids and classic deep red lip perfect this look.

Poppy Delevingne in Burberry Prorsum: A little psychedelic without veering too trippy, this dress is the ideal option for any creative style savant. In a sea of neutrals, metallics and jewel tones, this forest green adds an undeniably refreshing jolt of color to the red carpet. And the whimsical embellishments contribute an unapologetically youthful energy that is rarely found at Cannes. On the accessories front, the tiered necklace emphasizes the deep neckline, making this look more fashion girl than party girl. Finished with a smokey eye and slightly messy updo (with the ubiquitous fashion girl middle part)? A sartorial homerun. 

Emma Stone in Christian Dior Couture: Not to sound overdramatic, but this dress is everything. Simply put, you can wear this dress everywhere: a wedding, red carpet, gala, prom, lounging around on a Sunday morning just because you want to feel a little fancy. The options are essentially limitless. While the soft white and swishy train can come across as strictly bridal, Stone gives this look a youthful twist by adding a subtle choker. Mixed with the boat neckline, the necklace provides a cool, 90s flair.The actress's neat updo keeps this look sophisticated while her subtle lip offers a pop of color.

Naomi Watts in Armani Privé: Goodbye, basic column dresses and extravagant trains; hello, thick ruffles. Though tiers are usually associated with the likes of flamenco dancers, it feels refreshing on The Sea of Trees actress. And flattering! Compact ruffles have the nasty reputation of adding unnecessary bulk; however, the elongated layers create a subtle hourglass figure. Thanks to the ice blue hue, this dress is dramatic enough without wearing Watts. The frock's black embroidery perfectly matches her thin black strappy sandals. To complete the look, Watts adds dangling earrings and a fresh face.

Natasha Poly in Chanel: It's very rare that a set of sleeves make an outfit but do not create a paparazzi-attracting spectacle.  Paired with a flowy silhouette, this dress is the perfect thing to wear on a cool summer evening. With the help of fetching accessories as well as a gifted hair and makeup crew, Poly's ensemble cries old Hollywood glamour more than mumsy. The T-Strap heels and chained bags are sweet, while the deep lip and exaggerated side part add the right amount glamour. Not to mention the crimson lip compliment the frock's navy hue.

Fan Bingbing in Ralph & Russo Couture: Stateside, Chinese actress Fan Bingbing is known more for her extravagant sartorial choices than her bustling filmography. Especially at high-profiled events, she sports dresses that are classic with a hint of fantastical. The floral fripperies on this gown are part old money feminine, part ethereally whimsical.While a petal power frock with a trumpeted skirt can feel a little matronly, the dramatic train and funky geometric clutch offer a hip twist. Paired with matching dangling earrings, a chunky bracelet and rings, this look is glamorous, feminine, daring and dramatic all at once.  Now that's a strong red carpet look.

Kendall Jenner in Alaia: Rest assured, style rookies: attending an A-List red carpet and embracing youthful, forward-thinking style are not mutually exclusive. Case in point? Kendall Jenner. Whether rocking a crop top, thigh-grazing hemline or an up-to-there slit, the model, muse (and Kimye relative) never fails to remind us that she's only 19 years-old. But there's something commendable about her fashion choices, especially this Alaia number. Though it's easy to forget, fashion is all about having fun. After seeing photos of Jenner swishing her full, bohemian skirt, it looks like that's exactly what she was doing. While the silhouette and texture looks like something one would wear after spending hours on the beach, the layers of Chopard gems and bright red lip make this getup completely Cannes-worthy.

Red Carpet Round Up: 2014 Met Ball

It should go without saying, but allow me to make one thing very clear: the Met Ball is the queen bee of all red carpets. Ever. Outrageously avant grade ensembles, celebrities and industry heavyweights mingling, and a drool-worthy exhibit--what more could a complete fashion nerd need? While it is one of the very few times when the red carpet welcomes (and celebrates) outfits that dare to be different, there are always a handful of major looks and awful get-ups. Without a moment to spare, let's take a look at this year's best and worst gowns, shall we?

The Worst.

Cara Delevingne in Stella McCartney: Though it's basically assumed that we will never see an off-duty Delevingne sport a regal gown, the funky "it" model has never looked so trashy!  A trouser to the Met Ball can be a rewarding risk, but full hair and a skimpy top scream more Olivia Newton John in Grease than fashion-forward. This number would've been perfect for last year's punk theme, but the night was all about paying homage to America's founding couturier! Charles James would not approve.

Kristen Stewart in Chanel: One word: too much mixed media! Yes, the Met Ball is the ultimate time to wear such a high-octane dress; however, the feathers, metallic belt, and abundance of sequins equals sensory overload. At least the Twilight star didn't add statement accessories to boot. Oh, the horror.

Maggie Gyllenhaal in Valentino: A sartorial acid trip gone completely wrong, this is simply too much dress for the actress. Gyllenhaal's low-maintenance hair and simplistic makeup make it feel as if the dress is wearing her! And though a cape is always a great way to make a statement, the polka dots completely overshadow the silhouette. A classic case of trying too hard, don't you think?

Shailene Woodley in Rodarte: Just no. As one of the coolest young actresses in Hollywood, the Divergent star looks extremely frumpy. Not to mention the grandma chic dress completely juxtaposes her edgy chop, and not in a good way. The use of seven too many fabrics, plus the forced smirk on her face, makes me wonder if this was an arts and crafts project the Mulleavy sisters did way back when.

Sandra Lee in Dara Lamb: Dressing in theme? Yes. Cheap fabric and poor execution? No thank you. This is the Met Ball-- time to pull out the top tier designers! 

Elizabeth Olsen in Miu Miu: As the sister of two megawatt designers, who let her out of the house in this condition? If the dress wasn't mediocre enough, the fit is atrocious. Since when is wearing a bra to the event of the year optional? And the steam job on the skirt of the dress is just dreadful. It's all about execution! 

Lupita Nyong'o in Prada: Supposedly at the apex of her career as America's favorite fashionista, this ensemble is a huge let down. While her dedication to the embellished flapper theme is admirable, the look is just a little too kitschy. Additionally, the clashing necklines is very distracting from an already busy ensemble. The Academy Award winner would've nailed her first Met Ball carpet with a cleaner, yet equally attention-grabbing ensemble. This evening called for a Ralph Lauren redux.

Katie Holmes in Marchesa: Shipwrecked Belle? I think so. Between the hair and the crinkled skirt, the ensemble looks insanely sloppy. Suri would've had a better dress.

The Best.

Beyonce in Givenchy: Did she wake up like this? Because the whole look is flawless. The partially sheer Givenchy gown is equal parts sexy and sophisticated. Plus, the gothic makeup and netted veil perfectly make this look Met Ball ready. And good news: Bey and Jay Z were also the evening's best dressed couple. The rapper's crisp white tuxedo jacket is an ideal match to his lady's noir outfit. As Queen B would say, "Bow down, bitches." 

Victoria Beckham in Victoria Beckham:  While it's nothing special, the growing minimalist in me can't help but adore this ensemble. Though the Met Ball serves as the perfect time to let your inner fashion freak loose, this is the Spice Girl-turned- designer's aesthetic. It's admirable that no event could shake her strong perspective. The sleek silhouette and soft color palette make her outfit ideal for the summer. On the accessories front, Beckham layered just the right amount of jewels. Translation? A crisp and classic look for the books. 

Stella McCartney: Out of all of Stella's Angels, the designer's outfit is ironically my favorite.  The trousers mixed with the striped asymmetrical top is innovative (and looks comfortable). The chunky bracelets on one wrist offer some balanced to this look. The natural makeup works with McCartney's nonchalant get-up while the chunky peep-toe heels and oval clutch give this look a whimsical twist.

Taylor Swift in Oscar de la Renta: A perfect blend of avant garde and relatable, Swift couldn't have chosen a better gown for the big night. The delicate embroidery is perfectly counteracted by the dress's dramatic train. To prevent an over- styled look, she smartly throws on dainty jewelry. As everyone knows, the singer rarely attends an event without her signature red pout, and Swift smartly uses the dress's pale pink hue as a neutral. The result? An all-star lesson in color theory.

Sarah Jessica Parker in Oscar de la Renta: Doesn't it sometimes feel as if the Met Ball should be renamed "The Sarah Jessica Parker Appreciation Ball?" Always perfectly in theme, this ensemble was bonafide scene stealer. The voluminous silhouette is balanced by a neutral black and white color combination. While she kept the jewels to a minimum, the gloves and ultra-glamorous hair supply a necessary dash of drama. Together, the look is extravagant whilst sophisticated and streamlined. 

Diane Kruger in Hugo Boss: Can Diane Kruger do no wrong? The icy hue mixed with the textured fabric stands out from your run of the mill neutral column dress. In addition, the pleated draped portion gives some more dimension to this ensemble and makes the dress Met Ball worthy. To exude a modern je ne sais quoi, Kruger opted for minimal jewels and a crisp white clutch. And let's not forget that Kruger's signature feminine makeup is flawless. But really, can Diane Kruger do no wrong? That was a serious question.

Hailee Steinfeld in Prabal Gurung: What's black, white, and chic all over? Not only is the execution of this dress supreme--the button details on the back of the gown is major and the color-blocking perfectly outlines her curves-- Steinfeld does a glorious job of wearing this ensemble. Unfortunately, a lot of dress with such a young girl tends to be a red flag; however, the actress has enough confidence and fashion star-power to carry such a lavish gown. Lastly, Steinfeld's thick brow and icy purple lip creates enough drama without competing with the dress.

Emma Stone in Thakoon: For the Met Ball, this dress is unusually plain to be on a best dressed list; however, what's not to love about sexier and sleeker side of the funny lady than we've seen in a long time? The different shades of pink makes the girly color modern, not to mention the high slit and cropped provide fun alternative to an otherwise basic silhouette. Stone completes this look with a youthful side braid, which was one of the evening's surprising beauty trends.

Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen in Vintage Chanel: Impeccably tailored? Check. Event appropriate? Yes. A strong runner up for "Best Dressed Couple?" Naturally. Even though the designing duo have two different aesthetics, their ability to wear dresses that play off each other without perfectly matching is impressive. With natural makeup and slicked back hair, the stylish sisters have earned their title as fashion plates.  

Dree Hemingway in Proenza Schouler: Call this look "too basic for the Met Ball," but I'll refer to this look as lovely. Could the model/ actress have worn a jaw-dropping gown to the event? Yes. Should she have? Perhaps. However, I love how the crisp silhouette is juxtaposed with old Hollywood curls and a red pout. Plus, the craftsmanship of this dress is so superior that it completely justifies Hemingway's no frills choice.

Anna Wintour in Chanel Haute Couture: Though the Vogue Editor in Chief always sports an outfit that is both classic and au courant, Wintour hit this look out of the sartorial ball park. Simply put, the dress is phenomenal. Not only do the details photograph beautifully, the dress's color palette is remarkable. In true Anna fashion, she smartly styled a statement necklace to give her look some extra pizazz.

The Style Files: It's an Ache I Still Remember

I know I deemed "Somebody That I Used to Know" trendy a couple months ago; however, I'm obsessed with this cover. Fun and Gotye rolled into one? Too good to be true!

Style Spiration: Rachel Bilson

Between her strong presence on websites like Who What Wear and her quasi-comeback in Hart of Dixie, Rachel Bilson- and her style- is everywhere. Bilson has a strong, polished style that could make any  fashionista swoon. Let's take a peek, shall we?

From the retro wide-legged pants to the poppy white frames, Bilson hits this casual  look out of the park at a Sunglass Hut event. Sure, this look may come off as a bit...casual-  the hair is unstyled and the barely-there makeup infuses effortless chic into this ensemble. Let's be honest, what says "fashionista" better than effortless chic?  (Photo Cred)

I absolutely love the Zac Posen creation Bilson sported at an Art of Elysium event. The feminine silhouette and fabric combination is divine; however, the vivid rose color adds a dash of glamour. The matching lip, girly hair, and minimal jewels are super refreshing. (Photo Cred)

If you look quickly, it's like Audrey Hepburn time traveled to the millenium!  Bilson exudes ladylike style at the Tribeca Film Festival. The boxy silhouette is perfectly paired with the brocade-esque embellishments. The soft pastels look sharp against the black pumps and clutch. And that 60's hair? J'adore! And when a certain Mr. Lagerfeld is your arm candy, can you really be on the worst dressed list? Exactly. (Photo Cred)

As always, Bilson aces street style.  I love the way she blends layers and different fabrics together. The solid booties are so unexpected, which is what personal style is all about. But before we write off this look as "edgy", the braid brings this look back to its original casual aesthetic. (Photo Cred)

The Weekly

The beginning of summer means a lot of things: tan skin, bikini shopping, iced beverages, and, oh, Cannes. Ready for some exceptional red carpet style? I am! 

• Freida Pinto at the Cannes Film Festival premiere of Moonrise Kingdom (Michael Angel): In my mind, Freida Pinto is a fashion miracle. We don't see her on every red carpet; however, she ceases to amaze me with her cunning sense of style Though the beaded bodice may sound over the top, the relaxed peplum and draping on the skirt balances out the extravagant fripperies. The simple ring and drop earring beautifully complement the sparkle in her dress. Pinto recruits the stunning updo to finish off this red carpet glam look.
• Diane Kruger on the Le Grand Journal show (Balmain): As any stylista knows, Diane Kruger is the queen of edgy fashion. Fortunately, she does not disappoint here! Kruger perfectly blends simple and feminine silhouettes with chunky accessories. Tres chic. The simple makeup and casual hair bring the two extremes together. 
• Kate Moss at the Marie Curie Cancer Care event: That's a fur I need to own.
• Diane Kruger at the Cannes opening ceremony (Giambattista Valli Haute Couture): Princess alert in Cannes! Although this ensemble is a world's difference from her Balmain outfit, I'm obsessed with both.The sweeping silhouette is perfectly combined with the gorgeous aqua and dramatic asymmetrical shoulder? So smitten!

The Style Files: You're the Only One I See

Okay, ever since the VMAs, I'm absolutely OBSESSED with Beyonce's song "Love on Top." I think it's super cute and puts me in the best mood. Beyonce is the best, enough said.

Style-Spiration

So I really think that Selena Gomez is the fountain of youth for style. She keeps it classy and always looks mega youthful. With going back to college and all, I think it's imperative to dress stylish but  not look aged. Miss Gomez, this Style-spiration goes to you.

At the 2008 Alma Awards in Marchesa.  I'm obsessed wit h this dress and the styling is prime. The upper cuff keeps this grecian look current. And the side bun is supreme. The effortlessness is super classy but she doesn't look agaed.  (Photo Cred)

At the MuchMusic Video Awards in Burberry. Jeez. She may look a little too teen with this look and the uber curly hair; however, I do give her credit for mixing up the color situation. While most people do nude shoes and a colored dress, she reversed it. Good going, Selena! (Photo Cred)

Miss Gomez in Marchesa Notte. It's known that a Little Black dress is the epitome of classy;however, the fun shoulders added the PERFECT amount of fun. And the red lip totally spiced up a potentially mature look. I just love how she can add a fashion forward spin to even something so timeless. As a result, her look is new, funky and chic. (Photo Cred)


Well this style-spiration was less-than-perfect, but onto the weekly!

• Kim Kardashian being glamourous in the Big Apple (I need to figure it  out) :She actually looks flawless. Like, I wish she wore this to her wedding...what? Anyways, it's so flattering on her body and I love this dress paired with the soft waves. The dazzling ,yet , minimal jewels were the perfect finishing touch. Also, dark nails with a ivory dress? To die for! 
• Diane Kruger at the Ides of March Premiere (Elie Saab): I don't usually use the word marvelous, but this look is truly marvelous. She looks like a beautiful princess! Okay, I'm creepy...let's talk fashion. I love the color, especially with her complexion and hair color. The glitzy bodice and the minimal jewels are a perfect combination. And the effortless hair mixed with the princess silhouette is a perfect juxtaposition. Obsessed. 
• Julianna Margulies (Carolina Herrera): Gorgeous. I'm a sucker for houndstooth so I went googly-eyes for this skirt. The semi-shear top added some sex appeal to this skirt. Hate to break it to you, but houndstooth isn't very sexy. But with a shear shirt? For sure! And she gets major style points for that fuschia lip, so chic and unexpected! I knew I liked her when  wore that velvet dress...

The Style Files: Your Silence in a Crowded Room, Louder than the Loudest Tune

Well if this blog post doesn't show you how random my life is, I don't know what will. One of the many perks of living in New York's suburbia is the GREAT commercials for Broadway shows. Lately, I've been overwhelmed with Spiderman: Turn off the Dark and one of the songs has been stuck in my head for weeks. So I bought it on iTunes and can't stop listening to it now. Since the music's by Bono and the Edge, you won't be listening to typical "kick-ball-change" music. So here it is:

Style-Spiration: Diane Kruger 

Diane Kruger is one of those celebrities that I love buuut know absolutely nothing about. This week, she rocked a bow-tie and that's when I knew she had to be my Style-Spiration for this Sunday Edition. I just love how she takes so many risks and never backs down from a challenging trend. She's the definition of a celebrity fashionista.

Just hiding from the stalkerazzi. If Diane Kruger wasn't wearing this, I would say this is a horrible outfit. Preppy pastel+preppy neon+hip fedora+ S&M shoes= disaster. But there's something about the way Kruger put this together. It's a very, "I don't give a s**t  (trying to keep it PG, you know)" or, "Oh I'm so busy. Let me just throw this on anything and everything I could find." Regardless of her true intentions, this look is very thrown together; however, the juxtaposition is ironic and tres chic. I just don't know how she does it and I surely do not think you should try this at home. It can get dangerous (Photo Cred).

At the 82nd Academy Awards in Chanel Haute Couture: I forget what my final verdict on this dress was at the time, but I remember that I condoned her for stepping out of the "full-skirted evening gown" trend.  I imagine this selection of this dress to go a little something like this: while most people said no because it was "too much," Diane Kruger gives the dress one look and says, "Simple, but it'll do." I love the light peach and black combination: very vintage and Parisian. While the different fabric techniques might not work on everyone, Kruger is fearless enough to make this work. Pairing this dress with minimal jewels, and an updo was a great move. I do wish, however, she had a strong lip (Photo Cred).

At the 2008 MET Ball (Alberta Ferretti):  I always get really taken a'back when people wear short dresses to the MET Ball. Where's glamourous avant garde evening gowns? In this scenario, Kruger took a risk by wearing a rather simple dress to such a lavish event. Silly Diane! While I don't love this dress for this occasion, or the shoes for that matter, there goes Ms. Kruger takin' some risks. (Photo Cred)

I've said it before and I'll say it again, fashion is all about risks! So before you take some risks, it's onto the weekly! 

THE WEEKLY! 

I'm very happy because I have a theory about why this looks were so great this week. In the summer time, so many people abandon their style. But Fall is so close so everyone's excited! 

• Miranda Kerr frolicking around L.A (unknown designers): After you have a mild heart attack over how skinny she is, I hope you'll appreciate how easy, yet chic this look is. In my humble opinion, maxi dresses are insta-chic: you don't need much else and you instantly look rather dressy. The long sleeves and fun print of this maxi makes it low-maintenance but a successful look. I do wish, however, she had her hair up in a messy bun. Or a pony tail. Or a braid! 
• Ginnifer Goodwin at the ABC Summer Press Release Shindig (3.1 Phillip Lim): Lookie here, my trendy friends, this is how you rock mixed fabrics: keep it all in one color. This is prime styling right here: I love the lace, combined with the silk body of the dress, and those furry sleeves. I'm going ga-ga over them. If this look was even broken up into black and white, it'd be a fail. SO KEEP IT MONOCHROMATIC! Also, if you plan on mixing fabrics, keep the rest of the look simple: minimal jewels, clean hair, and natural makeup. Go, Ginnifer, Go!
• Kelly Rowland at an X-Factor Press Conference (Versace with Giuseppe Zanotti heels): While I really don't like Kelly Rowland- I don't really think she has any reason to be such a fashion icon and she took my girl Cheryl Cole's position on The X Factor- she honestly looks lovely. I love the lines in this outfit: the teal waves are so sick. And those booties? Fabulous. The wavy hair is totally vixen and youthful. Solid job, Kelly.
• Julianne Moore at the  Blu-Ray release of The Big Lebowski (Jason Wu): I'm so in love with this look. Do you remember the short-lived show, Cashmere Mafia? Well, this outfit looks like it could be straight out of that show, and I like it! The silhouette is simple, allowing the oversize- yet proportionate- bow to take center stage. And here's a major fashion DO: tortoise accessoires with black. How amazing do those shoes look with this ensemble? Keeping the hair sleek is perfect for making this bow truly stand out. Gorgeous, overall.

Creme de la Creme

 HAPPY MET-BALL-MONDAY! 

In my opinion, this is the biggest and chicest holiday in the fashion world! I love watching the ingenuity and innovation that struts down the red carpet. In my mind, the crazy- well, within reason- is chic: Andre Leon Talley's get-ups here make me laugh rather than cringe.  And I'm super stoked to see the "Savage Beauty" exhibit when I head back to New York next week. I hope that one day, I will either be styling a celebrity for the Met Ball or be at it myself. But for now, I'll sit in my dorm room and examine all of the chic looks. There are barely any looks I don't love at the red carpet gala.  Usually, my worst dressed picks are just things I don't think are creative enough for the MET BALL!So here are the best and worst looks! 

First, THE WORST

• NAOMI CAMPBELL (ALEXANDER McQUEEN): Ugh, I hate this so much. I understand Campbell and McQueen were friends, so why don't you honor him by wearing one of his more awesome looks? The accessories were good, but I just really don't love the dress. As much as creativity is key for this event, this dress almost looks destroyed. Just not a fan.

• GWYNETH  PALTROW (STELLA McCARTNEY): As much as I love the sparkles that are embedded in this McCartney dress, minimalism is so not the way to go for the Met Ball. Although she looks gorgeous, it's just not event-appropriate.
• JENNY FROM THE BLOCK GUCCI): This dress definitely had potential for the Met Ball, but it could've been styled better. I understand how her stylist tried to create a juxtaposition between the details on her shoulders and the sleekness of her hair, but she looks basically bald. I think this look would've been better if she did her hair differently. Besides, the neckline simply had way too much going on,  and not enough going on in the skirt of the dress. All in all, it just wasn't balanced. And I wish Jenny from the Block added some more color besides fuchsia: yes it's a beautiful color but it's way too much for this avant garde dress, clutch, and lip color.
• KATE HUDSON (STELLA McCARTNEY): Biggest upset of the night. I'm equally obsessed with Kate Hudson (celebrity) and Rachel Zoe (her stylist), so I always think of them as a "power team." Unfortunately, tonight was not the case. I know it must be hard to style a pregnant woman for the Met Ball, but this is just a train-wreck. She looks like an absolute mess!  The silk is not flattering on her pregnant figure and makes her look bigger if anything else. Though the jewel in her hair is interesting, I think the glamour of this McCartney and the wavy hair does not create a striking contrast; it just looks poorly- styled.  I'm so disappointed.

• MICHELLE WILLIAMS (MIU MIU): Ugh why is she always so miserably looking and wears uber casual things. This is the Met Ball. I'm not saying everyone has to incorporate LED  lights into their look, but do something to excite us fashion slaves. COME ON.
• LEA MICHELE (ESCADA): Same goes to you. Seriously, she always knocks it out of the park at red carpet events. She  looks fabulous; however, wore something a million times chicer and more innovative at the Golden Globes this year.

Moving on... now, THE BEST.

• BLAKE LIVELY (CHANEL): If this was any other event, I would seriously hate this. But it's the Met Ball!  Her soft hair, the draping of the dress, and the brocade on the side create a super chic and super modern Grecian look. I think this mix of neutrality and sparkles is a fun juxtaposition of fabrics. As always, Blake knows how to dress for every occasion. 
• BEYONCE (PUCCI): Even though McQueen didn't design this look, Beyonce look so appropriate for this event. The sex appeal of this dress and Byzantine inspiration was so innovative and super McQueen. She looked amazing and I'm glad that she kept the hair, makeup, and jewels to a minimum: this is one of the very few events were the focus is on the fashion instead of the celebrities.  She looked flawless.
• GISELE BUNDCHEN (McQUEEN): Absolutely stunning. The craftmanship  on this dress is so regal. I love how this gown is rather understated but the drama of the train makes it Met Ball worthy.  The diamond bracelet and earrings make her look like a fashion "It-Girl." And look, she even paired it with a McQueen clutch!
• DAPHNE GUINNESS (MCQUEEN): The epitome of Met Ball fabulousity. This is so avant garde, so McQueen, and so fashion forward- I'm obsessed.  Of course, if this was on Helena Bonham Carter, at a major red carpet event, we'd think this was bizarre.  But that's what people need to realize about this gala. This is what the Met Ball is all about: wearing art, not just dresses.And that's what i think The grey pumps make this look absolutely classic. I'm such a fan.

• ASHLEY GREENE (DONNA KARAN): Flawless, this whole look is so old school glamour. It's styled perfectly and, although it's not the most creative dress, I can't help but loving it.
• DIANE KRUGER (JASON WU): Yippee! I knew Kruger would pull through for this event! She looks incredible in Jason Wu, and I'm so jealous she got to go with him to the ball- she's just like Cinderella! It's so sexy, but retro at the same time. The silt in the black skirt as well as the quasi-transparent bodice of the dress is super sultry; however, the bright red lip and retro curls make a creative mix and adds innovation! I'm also glad she didn't chose a chunky heel or something artistic for footwear, it would've made the outfit way too unbalanced.  She's such a style icon and I'm so smitten.

• MIA WASIKOWSKA (SOMEONE-PLEASE-LET-ME-KNOW-WHO-DESIGNED-THIS): I think Audrey Hepburn was looking down on this event thinking, "Damn, I wish I could wear that." This dress is the epitome of a modern day Audrey Hepburn look: the hemline, the classically innovative silhouette, the  fun spin on a LBD. Though I think a red lip, and maybe on diamond bracelet would've completed this look, I love how she keeps the look simple so everyone will see how awesome this dress is. 
• FERGIE (MARCHESA): I love how Fergie went for this ethereal glamour. It's so unexpected for Fergie; however, she looks absolutely stunning in this Marchesa. I'm obsessed with this mix of tulle and vines makes this look attainable and not so scattered. And I loved the golden makeup and the hippie headband: the perfect touch! 
• EMMA STONE (LANVIN): Honestly, who wears florals to the Met Ball? Emma Stone does and she looked absolutely ravishing! Though these large florals can look a bit matronly, Stone dressed it up with a bright pink lip, eclectic dangle earrings,  and a messy updo. She looks like an old school Hollywood starlet with a modern streak. 
• EVA MENDES (STELLA McCARTNEY): I'm obsessed with this look: she's really rocking the emerging 70's inspired trend. I love this bright blue against her tan skin, she looks super fresh!  The asymmetrical shoulders as well as the fun sleeves. And the gold accessories make this look to-die-for-glam.  Stunning! 
• PENELOPE CRUZ (OSCAR DE LA RENTA): While I wish she completed this look with a metallic clutch, Cruz always looks insanely fabulous. Her in this Oscar de la Renta number is so exciting! Even though it's black, the camera truly picks up all of the fabulous details in this dress.  The soft waves and delicate jewels work extremely well with this feminine silhouette. Oh , and I'm in love with the train! 
• DIANNA AGRON (MICHAEL KORS): Although this might be deemed "too normal for the Met Ball," I really do love how Dianna took a fashion risk of her own. Usually, we see her in beautiful Carolina Herrera gowns while rocking an uber feminine look; however, she looks so sleek and modern here. The haltered top is casual but, paired with a sleek pony and a gold cuff, looks fierce. Usually, I hate red on red carpets, but the cut is simple enough and Agron didn't overplay her red-hot look. Many tend to match a red dress with red lips but, while that makes sense, I think it's way too much red!  Dianna kept it smart while rocking light makeup. Bravo! 

THAT WAS SO MANY LOOKS! Seriously, my "Best Dressed" list was much longer, but I had to cut it off somewhere. But that was great fun!

The Weekly: Let's Reflect

 First thing's first.

Happy New Year!

I hope that everyone had a fun and safe holiday that will be followed by a year of laughter, health, and fabulousity.

I had a whole list of looks that I thought were good  this week but, due to the technological hardships we are facing in Londontown, I decided to do a list of the best of the best. My favorite fashionistas, who were seen in my weeklies,  and what I think should be in store for them in the new year. 

So let's get this started, yes?

Claire Danes has been doing some great stuff this year. What I love most about her looks is that she can do a range. She can rock a soft and classic  Armani Prive, but can go toughie and innovative in Burberry. She is such a blank slate and looks gorgeous no matter what. Though I'm a big fan of accessories, I think the fabrics of these dresses are so intense that a plethora of jewels would ruin it. In the future, I would love to see Danes experiment more with silhouettes; differences in volume and length would totally spice up her wardrobe. Maybe something like this Lanvin? With that in mind, let her pile on  the jewels!

Regardless of some of her mistakes, I do love Diane Kruger. Unlike so many celebrities of our day, she always dressy trendalicious and classy.I enjoy how she actually seems to care about what she wears; she's been spotted at Chanel resort shows! Though some of her looks may not make the best dressed lists, she always take risks. What kind of person can go from Jason Wu, to Chanel, to Vuitton in just a few months (from classic, to feminie and chic, to trendy, respectively)? Diane Kruger can. And the best part is, all three of those looks are so effortless on her! Diane Kruger, oh yes she's a muse to the (insert style here) look. It's cliche, but I have no critiques, just keep doing what you're doing. While it'd be great to have more commercial hits, she's taking risks and they definitely speak more to the fashion-inclined.

Emma Watson and Emma Roberts are the two best dressed Emma's in Hollywood. What I love best about their two styles, is how they're aging with grace and class. Some celebrities channel their inner Miley Cyrus to show off their womanhood, but these ladies use their class to show that they are better than the others. Watson's incredible white Burberry to show off a mature side of her and Roberts keeps it young but appropriately sexy in Julien Macdonald. The only improvements these two ladies can do is keep growing into their style. Though this look is great for their age, I think that both of them should begin to grow into some minimalist looks. Maybe some Calvin Klein with major statement pieces?



Without a doubt, Blake Lively is probably the biggest fashion icon of this decade. The new face of Chanel bags? Getting shoes named after her by Louboutin? Sitting next to Anna Wintour during fashion shows. Trust me, I read the articles! It's just enough to be threatened by any aspiring fashionista. But, to give her credit, she does have a smashing sense of style.  My favorite part about Blake Lively's look is how she self-styles herself. You rarely see that anymore, which makes me respect her a lot. She knows just how to rock a Marchesa with the perfect amount of accessories , for example. That takes skill! Every look of hers is very different which, considering she doesn't have a stylist, is a lot of work so you must give her credit for that as well. In the next year, I think she should start to be more sophisticated with her fashion. She tends to show a lot of cleavage which isn't necessary, she should focus on her great taste!


And Kate Hudson is utterly fabulous. Do I love her because I love her movies? Or because of her personality? Or because Rachel Zoe styles her? I'll never know BUT she's done some amazing things this year.  What I think is great about Kate is that she can make even the most atraditional dress classy and chic. I mean...we never see her in a full skirted gown, do we? Nope! And that's because she does what's current. Like the Pucci she wore at the SAG Awards. Honestly, who else would be able to pull that off? And the Lanvin she wore at the 2010 Glamour Woman of the Year  was, once again, extremely atypical but it  worked for her and it was quite fabulous.  I think it would be interesting in 2011 to see Hudson wear some typically feminine pieces, maybe some De la Renta. Just think, how random, confusing, and ultimately fabulous would that be?!
