The Style Files: Hot and Fresh out the Kitchen

I've probably expressed this a million times in this blog, but here we go again: I love Joseph Gordon Levitt. So much. He's so beautiful.  My friend showed  me the following video and I'm borderline obsessed with it. He's just so perfect.

STYLE SPIRATION: Olivia Wilde

In my humble opinion, Olivia Wilde always look super fashion-forward. Her style is constantly evolving and I love it. I feel like nobody should be stuck in a single style forever. Evolution is key! Take a note: Olivia Wilde uses juxtaposition to spice things up.

Olivia Wilde at the 2011 Golden Globes (Oscar de la Renta): This is one of my all-time favorite red carpet looks. The femininity of the dress plus the edginess of her hair and the Louboutins equals a stellar look. So trendy, I'm obsessed. (Photo Cred)

At the Glamour Reel Moments Premiere (David Szeto): While I wish that she wore a jewel-toned shoe instead of the hot pink one, I'm totally digging the concept. The vertical stripes on her dress are extremely slimming, especially with that silhouette. The bangle and drop earrings are very simple; however, they promote a steady movement from her hair and makeup down to the pink shoe.  Besides the harshness of the hot pink shoe, I love the styling of this outfit: so classic! In addition, her makeup and soft updo are fabulous.(Photo Cred)

At Ralph Lauren's Spring 2012 Show: Incredible. First of all, I love a good playsuit: always have, always will. The keyhole in this playsuit is super sexy, but not slutty. The green clutch and burnt orange lipstick are fabulous pops of color: they add that dash of juxtaposition without looking awkward. Her soft waves also keeps this look casual: a sleek ponytail would've been too much for NYFW.(Photo Cred)

THE WEEKLY

• Elizabeth Olsen at the London premiere for Martha Marcy May Marlene (Chanel Haute Couture): The other Olsen is such an up-and-coming fashionista, I kind of love it. The silhouette and fabulous detailing of the look is so European. The blush pink gives such an edgy skirt and top combination a dash of femininity. The red lip gives this look some life and those waves are absolutely enviable. 
• Sienna Miller at the International Medical Corps (Twenty8Twelve): I love how sixties and girly this look is. The boatneck, mixed with the short sleeves, is so classic. Keeping an entirely black outfit is uber fabulous because it allows her hair, makeup, and those awesome hoop earrings to take center stage. I'm really into  that high bun: so retro! Overall, it's a pretty simple look, but that's what makes it chic.
• Nicole Richie at the ACE Awards (Antonio Berardi): Borderline obsessed with this look. That plunging V neck and subtle slit is super sexy; however, the updo and the minimal jewels make this look more classic. On the other hand, the studded clutch gives off this super edgy vibe. All of these different influences work because the outfit is completely black. Fabulous.

I guess this week's theme was monochromatic?

The Style Files: We Can Make it Right, Hit the City Lights

Last weekend, my friends and I had a mini Michael Jackson tribute. Ever since then, I can't stop listening to "P.Y.T." I couldn't tell you why I'm obsessed with this song, but I am. Michael Jackson will always be the King of Pop.

STYLE-SPIRATION: NICOLE RICHIE

Say what you will about her, but I love Nicole Richie. She was hilarious on The Simple Life- I almost forgot about that show- and has made an incredible transformation from a sloppy mess, no offense, to a hip fashionista. This is what Lifetime movies are made out of, people! For this edition, I thought it'd be super fun to chronicle her amazing metamorphosis. 

2003: This is borderline painful. First of all, that hemline? WAY TOO SHORT. I'm all for a punk-inspired shoe, but with this outfit? A major STYLE DON'T. I don't like how monochromatic the scarf-slash-dress situation is. And that bag? This is actually tragic. (Photo Cred)

At the Maxim Hot 100 Party in 2005: Clearly, this was the start of  "Scary-Thin" Richie; however, the styling of this look is a huge improvement. Obviously, this was the era of Richie and Zoe. The silhouette, though plain, is more ladylike than that situation Richie previously wore. The fierce snakeskin shoe acts as a neutral, which is fabulous. Her hair and makeup gives her an approachable vibe. Kind of plain, though. (Photo Cred)

At the Charlotte Ronson RTW Fall 2006 Show: This look is okay. She attempts rocking funky accessories; however, the look is still a little primitive. This look would be a million times better if she stuck to black.  For the record, I wanted the Fendi Spy Bag SO bad when I was younger. (Photo Cred)


2008: Ugh, so stellar! The print is so bohemian; however, the black and white color combination makes this dress ladylike at the same time. The summery cutouts and the empire waist flatter her body by giving her a little more shape. Also, the gold accessories are the perfect way to spice up a black and white look. (Photo Cred)



At the 2010 MET Ball (Marc Jacobs): Love this look so much! Although the silhouette is simple, the sparkle of the  dress really gives this look a "wow" factor. Keeping the accessories simple was incredibly smart of her.  And the long locks gives this look the quintessential Nicole Richie boho-chic flair!  (Photo Cred)


 2011- At a Sephora/ Charlotte Ronson Event (A Solid Mix of McQueen, Kate Winter, Louboutin, and House of Harlow): While this look doesn't really portray her boho chic aesthetic, I think it proves that she's really changed. The sleek ponytail and the strong lines on the coat makes this look modern while the bag- I'm obsessed with that bag- creates juxtaposition, which I love. I also love how Richie wears things from her own line. If they're cool enough for Nicole Richie, who wouldn't want to purchase those pieces?

THE ANTI-WEEKLY
Oh yes, ladies and gent, the Anti-Weekly is back! While there were some fabulous looks from this week, there were other looks that really rubbed me the wrong way. Since I'm a sassy one, an Anti-Weekly was an obvious decision.

• Leighton Meester at the Jimmy Choo Icon Collection Launch (Jason Wu): This is so hideous, it makes me feel uncomfortable. First of all, her hair looks like a TERRIBLE wig. I love Leighton Meester, but she needs to fix that horrible hair. And what's with the sheer blouse? Sure, sometimes showing your bra is appropriate: frat parties, strip clubs, Vegas, etc.  This is not one of those times. Nothing says unsexy more than a blouse and mid-thigh skirt. I think she was trying to pull off the sexy librarian look, but failed miserably. And those shoes? They don't even work with this look! Just horrible.
• Jennifer Aniston at the Elle Women Tribute in LA (Kaufman Franco): I'm totally "Team Jen;" however, this dress makes her look like a sagging Hollywood has-been. She's so beautiful and this dress doesn't do her justice: she's trying too hard! A nice sheath, straightened hair, and a killer accessory would have been sufficient. In my opinion, this is unflattering- look at the midsection- and disgusting.

The Weekly: Put Your Freakum Dress On

First of all, Happy Easter! I hope that everyone has a lovely holiday. This weekend was fabulous: the parentals came to Beantown for some Easter fun: shopping, eating fine foods, and good company. While my mom and I explored  the stores of Boston, we came across something very...interesting: Anime Boston. Yes, a whole weekend convention for anime. While a lot of people think that anime is "unusual" and a "social taboo," I give these people credit for dressing how they wish.  I know anime isn't usually looked at in a fashion perspective, but what you wear is all about expressing yourself.  And let's be honest, some of these looks are so Lady Gaga...and don' t a lot of people want to be just like Lady Gaga? So if you want to express yourself by dressing up like Sailor Moon, props to you!

I thought, in the spirit of the anime fun, why not create a DO and DON'T list of dressing up for these fun conventions.

• DO use flattering fabrics and hemlines: Some of these outfits can be risque so make sure that you use great materials.
• DO NOT hang out of your outfit: This weekend, my mom saw this girl who was legitimately popping out of her outfit. If you want to do anime conventions, please be tasteful.
• DO get creative with your outfits: We saw people dressed up as characters from Toy Story, which is totally not anime but I loved it!
• DO NOT carry weapons: I would've been really pissed off if someone poked me at the Prudential Center with a sword.
• DO have confidence: A lot of people won't understand this whole convention idea (neither do I, really), but you should have fun with it! Make it your own!

Alright, this was a really odd introduction into the weekly but, nonetheless, onto the weekly! 

• Reese Witherspoon at the Water for Elephants premiere (Jason Wu and Louboutins): This is so classic, I'm so smitten with this look.  That Wu dress is so regal and age appropriate. She isn't looking like a hoochi mama; however, she is showing off her great arms and legs. Although this dress doesn't have a "wow" factor, it is understated and that's what I love about it, for once! By the way, I love the simple up-do and light makeup. Move over Kristen Stewart, your boy has a MUCH better leading lady.
• Jordana Brewster at the Fast and Furious 5 premiere (Carolina Herrera) : Alternatively, this look is so youthful and fun, which is the exact look I want this summer.  The short sleeves remind me of a majestic goddess and I love how the skinny tie cinches the waist. The tie-dye floral is so right on and I love the color scheme. And her beachy waves work perfectly with this look. J'adore times a million.
• Megan Fox at a Jaguar Event (Carlos Obando): Megan Fox has been dressing so classily lately, and I'm loving it! The haltered neckline is something really obscure and understated but, when done in an old school glam way, looks awesome. The ivory dress contrasts beautifully with her dark hair and pink lips.  Although I wish she chose a different color for shoes, I do love the hair and the striking gold bangle. Well done! 
• Zoe Saldana at the Coach benefit (Isabel Marant): I really like the print on this dress but, more importantly, I am obsessed with the sleeves on this dress. Whenever people wear short sleeves, they're usually cap sleeves and, being extra paranoid over my arms, I HATE cap sleeves. These longer short sleeves make Zoe's arms look long and lean, which is what everyone aspires to have.  The strapped pump also makes  this look have a bit of spontaneity. No bracelets, but a striking bag, is the perfect thing add to this printed dress.
• Helen Miren at the Arthur premiere in Londontown (Dolce and Gabbana): Helen Miren is such a powerhouse and I'm loving this look. The leopard maxi is youthful, without making her look as if she's trying to hard.  She's not showing cleavage or leg, which makes it extremely appropriate. The minimal jewels also helped this look be more age appropriate. As you grow older, I think there's a fine line between chic and trying too hard. Helen Miren has found and almost perfected this balance.  For the record, I wore a look really similar to her's this week.
• Nicole Richie chilling in LA (not available): Love her or her hate, Nicole Richie is a style icon. Her life is so interesting- I'm really considering reading her memoir this summer- and I LOVE her boho-chic look; it's uber glam, refreshing, and effortless. I rarely talk about street style, but I really like this look. It's so hard to pull off a light wash jean; however, the light flowers on her blouse make the jeans less of a "oh-hey-what's-going-on-there" factor. Her hair and makeup is so natural but still so glam. I JUST LOVE HER, OKAY?!

The Weekly: That You Found a Girl and You're Married Now

This weekend has been a wedding filled weekend. Because spring break is SO close, some of my lovely ladies and I have taken the weekend to do some homework. Fortunately for us, but unfortunately for our homework, we continued to be distracted by Say Yes to the Dress  and My Best Friend's Wedding. Consequently, I began thinking about something that will be life defining: my wedding dress. I have no desire to get married right now, but in terms of the wedding dress, why start early? This post isn't going to turn into "these are the wedding dresses I like", but I've devised a few do's and don'ts of the wedding ensemble.

But I will say that this dress is gorgeous:

1. DO NOT add color to your wedding dress: Unless you plan on polygamy or a divorce, this is your only wedding. Keep it classic and keep it white (or some shade of off-white).
2. DO allow your bridesmaids to look fabulous: I'm a really big fan of keeping your bridal party in the same color, but different dresses. If someone has to put up with your bridezilla ways, it's the least you can do! It's also like you have a fashion strutting down the aisle, which is my dream wedding.
3. DO NOT wear a short dress (unless it's your second wedding): Let's be honest, do you frequently wearing fabulous evening gowns? No! So why would you let the opportunity pass? That's just silly!
4. DO splurge (if you are financially able): Not only is this a once in a lifetime dress, but you want to make sure that it is made well. How embarrassing would a wardrobe malfunction be as you're throwing the bouquet?
5. DO make sure the bodice is form fitting: Whether you're opting for the princess skirt or a mermaid silhouette, you want to show off your bridal bod! Your dress should be ill-fitting and, depending on where the skirt begins, a fitted bodice will be flattering on all! 
6. DO NOT settle for something that's just okay or ugly: This is your big day and you should love it more than your husband...kidding! 

Okay so enough of the sub-par introduction and now onto the Weeklies! 

• Tom Ford at the Vanity Fair After Party (I would assume Tom Ford): Fabulous. Can any man dress better than Tom Ford? I really don't think so.  I love the mixture of velvet and a regular tuxedo. The dark blue velvet is blue enough to look fashion forward, but dark enough to look classy. The proportion of the bow-tie is also spot on. It was clownish but not too small, which I loved. And the boutineer on the lapel is so adorable. Ugh, I just love him! He's so cute.
• Rosario Dawson at the same After Party (Diane von Furstenberg):  Love the dress' blue, I bought a dress from Topshop that's a similar blue! I think this dress is the perfect thing to wear to an Oscars After Party. The sparkles and length of the dress scream "classy", but the sexy slit and the relaxed silhouette screams "casual chic." I think her casual look was really cool and I'm glad she didn't stack on the jewels. I like how the hair was clean and slick, which was a perfect counter to the dress' silhouette. Also, I really loved the purple-grey shoes with the dress: it served as a neutral, which  made the main focus the dress. As it should be.
• Nicole Richie at the Elton John After Party (Halston Heritage): So sleek and sexy, which I am obsessed with.  The slits in her dress was mixed perfectly with the- dare I compliment minimalism- minimal silhouette and the long sleeves. The dramatic lip was also really striking and chic with pure white. The hoop earrings also made this edgy dress look retro, which is so Nicole Richie. I just love her and her dress.
• Blake Lively being trendy (Chanel): She has a way of always making it on my Weeklies.  Only Blake could make this all white ensemble look non-bridal. Overall, it's a really ethereal look: the messy hair, the ruffles on the dress. What I loved most about this look was the pop of color (aka the emerald earrings). I really believe that she could wear a garbage bag and be mistaken for wearing couture.

The Weekly: We Make the Hipsters Fall in Love

So my friend and I have a new obsession: HIPSTER HEADBANDS. Now you may be wondering, what's a hipster? Better yet, what's a hipster headband? Well, ladies and gents, this is a Hipster:

I think if your hair looks really really awesome, this can look awesome. I think it also depends on what kind of headband you wear: thin versus thick, sparkly versus plain, material, etc. I think if you want to perfect this look, reference the lovely Nicole Richie or refer to a Free People lookbook. Whatever the case is, the look must be consistent!! If you're going for a Hipster/Indie look, follow it through! Don't be a weenie!

Fall 2011 has been interesting thus far, I can't wait to share my views on it!  And in terms of the Grammys tonight...anything really goes. It's the Grammys!

But for now...onto the weeklies! 

• Blake Lively at AmfAR NYC Gala (McQueen): AWESOME. I don't think Miss Lively has worn McQueen yet, but it suits her well! Alexander McQueen, the designer and the brand, has been so avant garde, and so special that having relaxed hair and makeup is the perfect juxtaposition. The coloring is sick and the minimal jewels are the perfect match to this outfit. Love love LOVE.
• Nicole Richie at a Bergdorf Goodman Bash (Roland Mouret and House of Harlow): So fierce. Let's be honest, when do we ever see Nicole Richie in a fitted outfit? This outfit is super sleek and the new toned look is something new. I think what really makes this outfit, for me, is the super awesome House of Harlow accessories. She looks absolutely fabulous!
• Renee Zellweger at the Golden Camera Awards (Carolina Herrera): Obsessed. She looks like a fashion goddess. This grey looks so amazing with her pale skin and blonde hair. I wish she had better accessories though. But we never really see Zellweger rocking the red carpet, so this was a nice change!
• Natalie Portman at the Oscars luncheon (Lanvin): It might just be this angle, but it barely even looks like she's pregnant! The blue and pink is such a striking color combination. She's been all for these color combinations which is really fashion forward of her. I cannot wait to see what she'll be rocking in two weeks!
• Selena Gomez at the Never Say Never Premiere (Reem Acra): Why is she the most perfect person ever? As always, Selena Gomez looks fabulous. She looks like an uber fierce greek goddess and that purple is stunning on her.  I love the sparkly heels to mix it up and hair and makeup...ugh, she's perfection!
