Spring 2015 Trend: Check Mate

After a winter filled with debilitating blizzards, slick roads and slushy aftermath, there is light at the end of the tunnel. With spring just around the corner, scheming an outfit that consists of more than an oversized sweater, pair of jeans and clunky snow boots won't be easy. For instant outfit inspiration, take a look at the Trendologist's picks for top spring 2015 trends.

"Florals for spring? Groundbreaking." As the overstated, yet accurate, line from The Devil Wears Prada decrees, taking a sartorial lesson from the hyacinths and peonies that bombard your deli corners is passé. A print that's equally springtime-inspired, yet significantly less cliché, is gingham, which happened to run rampant on the spring runways. Far from Mary-Ann's traditional ensemble, designers' takes on this pattern offered more gravitas (and no coconut cream pie). Always at the fashion vanguard, Joseph Altuzarra showcased a polished alternative to this usually casual motif. The New York designer's collection of ladylike power suits in an array of colors is completely office-friendly. Equally feminine and sophisticated is Oscar de la Renta's heap of statement jackets that debuted at the late designer's farewell show. Paired with a delicate lace top and glamazon earrings, de la Renta's version of this trend exudes a "Lady Who Lunches" attitude. But not every example of gingham this season must adhere to prim and proper standards. Styled with a wide belt and off-the-shoulder sweater, Michael Kors's full skirts are the perfect way to give this feminine print an offbeat twist. And what about Bottega Veneta's peachy shirtdress? With the right accessories, this gingham-clad getup is perfect for almost any occasion. If you haven't gotten over your style rut from this year's harsh winter, remedy your wardrobe with a fetching matching top and shorts a la Diane von Furstenberg's spring show. Rid this ensemble of any Gilligan's Island connotations with a pair of platform sandals.

Repeat after me: I will not dress like a farmer, I will not dress like a farmer. Though top designers deem the cheery print worthy of our spring wardrobes, gingham tends to veer into barnyard territory. Free yourself from any Old MacDonald connotations by matching this print with modern, or ultra girly, silhouettes. While a checkered cropped shirt or pinafore dress may read campy, Michael Kors's mint halter dress is a forward-thinking replacement. Chloé's ruffled iteration is risky, but will add dimension (and a smile) to your look. Now that selecting au courant checkered pieces is a slice of sartorial cake, how does one style this notoriously finicky print? Play off the pattern's color. A cobalt overcoat will look striking with baby blue and white gingham; however, the look's monochromatism will surprisingly appease the farm girl fad. But if your closet is lacking vibrant statement pieces, opt for crisp white pieces to score an effortlessly chic outfit. Not ready to take the plunge on this trend? Ease into this phenomenon with a sweet gingham bikini.

Fall 2014 Trend: Chunky Knits

As temperatures plummet, wind chill skyrockets, and the number of layers multiply, chunky knits for these next freezing months seems like a no brainer. However, if the fall runway shows are any indication, this wintry style is just as stylish as it is practical. But, unlike a typical sweater and jean ensemble, these collections are anything but ordinary. At Christophe Lemaire, layers of scarves, sweaters, and cardigans in earthy tones were effortlessly piled over semi-flared denim. However, it was the unexpected knit leg warmers that exude a "wear me now" air. On the contrary, The Row's Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen created what appears to be the coziest, most textured look of the season. And most fashion fanatics will tip their hats off to any designer for creating a look that has both runway and lounge appeal. Though Michael Kors is known for being a king of American fashion, his take on this trend possesses an indescribable European nonchalance. Cool girls everywhere should be pairing their knits with masculine trousers. But don't write this trend off as effortless and mildly disheveled. Adam Lippes paired sleeveless sweaters with an otherwise ladylike look. And leave it to the Francisco Costa to utilize textures and send several knit, yet utterly minimalist, dresses down the catwalk at Calvin Klein. Whichever sartorial path you choose, this season's knits revitalize an otherwise wintry staple.

As easy as it may be to pair your sweater with a pair of skinny jeans and riding boots, amp up your winter wardrobe by styling your knits with more fashion-forward pieces. A basic sweater will instantly receive a chic upgrade when combined with a pleated skirt or wide-leg trouser. Though the pair of Uggs you secretly have lurking in the back of your closet seem like a great way to combat the imminent polar vortex, opt for a pair of a slim, up-to-there boot or sensible stacked heel. For an insanely stylish twist of this trend, focus on finding voluminous or extremely textured pieces in subdued hues, not vibrant brights.

Spring 2014 Trend: Hawaiian Florals

As anyone from the east coast will tell you, this has been one harsh winter. But rest assured, style savants, a warmer season is on its way. Need some proof? Spring's array of Hawaiian florals. This refreshing take on this motif is no surprise: resort collections from Jason Wu, Prada, and Fausto Puglisi hinted that we would be saying aloha soon. A few months later, and we were introduced to a multitude of different island flowers. While Marc Jacobs sent gothic prints down the runway and Marni's Consuelo Castiglioni welcomed an androgynous alternative, contemporary brands such as MSGM and Fausto Puglisi utilized a bright color palette. With crisp leather accessories and tailored silhouettes, Michael Kors taught his disciples that this print isn't just for island girls. So sorry beach dwellers, tastemakers are taking this pattern for a spin.

Just because this trend screams beachy chic doesn't mean you have to pair this print with puka shells, khakis, and an umbrella-clad frozen beverage. Instead, make a splash by sporting island florals from head to toe. To some, this ensemble may be a little "in your face"; however,  if you're going to make a statement, why not go all out? For those tamer trendsetters, compliment your printed top with equally vibrant separates, preferably in a hue that's featured in your beach blanket- ready piece. Update this look with some beaded accessories or unleash your inner island child with some very au courant birkenstocks. As for your beauty ritual? Rock a dewy complexion and slicked back locks.

Fall 2013 Trend: Forward-Thinking Fur

All the great ones have sported fur: Kate Moss, Elizabeth Taylor, Cruella Deville, and Mrs. Robinson, just to name a few . Though wearing a leopard jacket is hardly a groundbreaking fad, the traditional trend is getting a major makeover this  fall. From your bag, to your booties, to your average tee, fur is everywhere. But the phenomenon does not stop there. With"notice me" color schemes and thought-provoking patterns, this season's take on fur will make everyone stop and stare.

If you didn't get the memo, this trend is for trailblazing fashionistas only. Easing into the font? Start off small with some fury accessories- a textured evening clutch turns any average ensemble into a thought-provoking look. But if you want to have a major fashion moment and sport a fur jacket or tee even, power to you. So what's a style savant to wear with this fur focal piece? Add some depth by blending delicious wools and knits into the mix. Whether you style with slim trousers or a wintry maxi skirt, this trend is the perfect way to score a warm, cozy, and undeniably chic outfit. Take that, Mrs. Robinson.

Runway Report: Pre-Fall 2012

You'll never believe it, but I can be pretty busy sometimes. Between the Twelve Days of Trendy-  that was a blast- and my British holiday, I've barely had any time to blog. But don't worry, I know you were really worried, I'm here and ready to keep you updated. First up: Pre Fall 2012. Although I sometimes find this series of runway shows to be a little superfluous since Fall 2012 is so soon, there are so many collections that I was obsessed with. I don't know how long this recap will be, Pre-Fall 2012 was that great,  so I apologize in advance.

Oscar de la Renta

In my mind, Oscar de la Renta can literally do know wrong. From his ladylike day wear to his show-stopping evening gowns , this collection is so feminine and chic. The vast array of colors throughout this collection is absolutely stunning. Though some silhouettes are very similar, the different colors make each look special. I also love how de la Renta always incorporates jewels into each look. Each collection doesn't just showcase some new clothes; instead, Oscar de la Renta offers a mature and glamourous lifestyle through his collection.   (Photo Cred)

Alice+Olivia

This might have been my favorite collection of the whole preseason. I'm serious when I say that I loved every single look. From the oversized trousers to fun party dresses, every look is youthful and  fashion-forward. Throughout the collection, there's a mix of a feminine flare and versatility. To make the collection a little more edgy, the sassy berets and red lips are the perfect finishing touches. What made this collection so fabulous, at least for me, is Stacey Bendet's use of different colors, textures, and silhouettes. Since every look is truly unique, the collection feels more like a sneak-peak into a super glam girl's closet.  And can we talk about that finale?  The jeweled bodice plus the flowing silhouette equals perfection.  (Photo Cred)


Diane von Furstenberg 

In my mind, this collection is the perfect juxtaposition between Jackie O's style and a rocker chick in London during the 1960's. That subtle struggle between good versus evil truly made me love this collection. Honestly, if this collection was purely one or the other, I wouldn't have liked it as much; however, this conflict makes it  something special. (Photo Cred)

Zero & Maria Cornejo

Not only does this color experiment with different prints and  textures, but the execution of these pieces are awesome. Many of the pieces serve as a blank canvas to me,  therefore they are extremely versatile. The silhouettes are rather primitive; however,  each ensemble is executed magnificently. Execution is more important than innovation in my mind.   (Photo Cred)

Rag&Bone 

I'm usually not a fan of sports-inspired collections; however, I'm such a Rag & Bone fan. Unlike most sports-inspired collections, this collection is promising because of its versatile pieces. The cozy sweater, for example, would look awesome with skinny jeans, a maxi skirt, or even a bodycon skirt and chunky tights.The red leather skirt would also look fabulous with a chunky sweater or a slim-fitted shirt. Temperley London

I love this Temperley London collection because it's like feminine overload.  From the narrow silhouettes to the use of sequins and brocade-inspired pieces, this collection did not disappoint. I feel as if femininity is now a fashion taboo: we're now encouraged to dress androgynously, which I don't love. However , this collection shows us that we should be unapologetically feminine.   (Photo Cred)

Thakoon Addition

This collection is so cool because a lot of the pieces are quite weird. For example, the initially awkward silhouettes are definitely an acquired taste; however, they evolve into very chic and versatile pieces. Additionally all of the prints are borderline abrasive, but I kind of like it. However, I like my fashion like I like my people: weird. I love collections with stories and oddities. But that's what fashion should do: it should make you think. As a whole, the collection is definitely off-beat, youthful, and thought-provoking.   (Photo Cred)

3.1 Phillip Lim

I like this collection because it covers two different sides of the spectrum. The straight silhouettes and impeccable execution gives this look a very serious vibe. On the other hand, the funky comic tops prove that fashion is supposed to be fun. I love juxtaposition and some comedy in fashion.  Best of both worlds, right?  (Photo Cred)

Theyskens' Theory 

Reminiscent of his past, this collection depicts another  Olivier Theyskens designing peak. This collection strays away from clean-cut casual attire and explores a more gothic side of Theory. I love the long hemlines, quirky patterns, and layers overload. Also, there's something quite grungy going on here, and I like it.  (Photo Cred)

Michael Kors 

Honestly, I think this is the first time I've ever become addicted to Kors. Don't get me wrong, Michael Kors is such a fabulous American designers; however, I've never really felt that strong connection with one of his collections. Until now. With a saloon- vibe, this collection is a combination of all-American and progressive minimalism.  Should we talk about that detailing? Phenomenal. I love all of Kors' fur accents: it may not be very logical when it comes to pre-fall, but I'm a fan! Additionally, I love how Kors plays with hemlines and color throughout this collection. Ports 1961

Although this collection is super small,  it's definitely one of my favorites. If there are two things I love in life, it's definitely long-sleeved dresses and prints. There's a retro je ne sais quoi about this collection that I'm in love with; however, there's also something progressive about this collection. All of these pieces offer an effortlessly chic canvas to accessorize. The long dresses, for example, would look great as is or piled on with fur, necklaces, or even a moto-vest.  Obsessed.   (Photo Cred)

Burberry Prorsum

As much as I love my fur, feathers, and all around glamour, every now and then I love me some classic collections. Burberry Prorsum, for example, is the epitome of fashion-forward and classic glamour. In this collection, Christopher Bailey did a phenomenal job making classic fabrics and silhouettes exciting. The rich colors and textures truly added something special to each look. Like that fur jacket? Breathtaking. From fur trim to dainty florals, Bailey successful made this collection a hit.  In addition, the reoccurring bow belt adds femininity to these very traditional looks. Also, it gives the collection an additional consistency. I would also like to add that the men's ensembles are also spectacular.  (Photo Cred)

J. Mendel 

This collection is awesome because there are so many details.  From the creatively bunched bodices to the skirts with the sheared detailing, each evening gown is something to go ga-ga over. Throughout the collection, there's this awesome play between different textures, ultimately creating a super luxe feel. According to Giles Mendel, this collection is all about "unapologetic luxury," which I think is so right-on.  The emphasis on leather, evening wear, and fur precisely hits Giles' inspiration right on the head. (Photo Cred)

Jason Wu

I think it's in my DNA to love everything and anything Jason Wu creates. Fortunately, this collection is no exception. I love Wu's ability to constantly make classic pieces innovative. Sort of like this Burberry Prorsum collection, but different. Unlike Burberry Prorsum, each of Wu's collections are both cohesive and versatile. Anyways, now about the fashion. The everyday apparel is so awesome. I love how Wu incorporated red houndstooth into the collection. In general, I love the edgy contrast between the simple silhouettes and the geometric lines and colors. While his casual wear is stunning, this collection's evening dresses are phenomenal. I'm so smiten with that beautiful cobalt blue dress with the beyond incredible neckline. Fash-gasm, my new fashion word. (Photo Cred)

Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas TIME

Okay, so my title may be cheesy, but watches are definitely a necessary Christmas present. The beauty of it is that you can give a watch to everyone: men, women, boys, and girls. And also, the price ranges are endless! Whether its for fashion reasons, or a cute way to tell a certain someone that their lack of punctuality is annoying, a watch is an oh-so-chic present!

This is the one that I've been smitten with:

MICHAEL KORS. ROUND TORTOISE AND GOLD BRACELET WATCH. 38 MM

There's something about the gold and tortoise combination that I absolutely loves; it exudes classiness. To me, this watch is completely pragmatic and chic. It'd be perfect with a leather jacket,  dark wash jeans, and flat. But, at the same time, a little dress and jacket would work as well. Either stacked with bracelets or left alone, Michael Kors' watches are perfect accessories. 

Since my posts have been rather positive, I feel like it's a good time for a nice time for an original rant. 

SO YOU KNOW WHAT REALLY GRINDS MY GEARS?

Hipster Shades.

or as I would like to call them,

Hiprims.

Ugh. You know when someone's a complete and total Hipster, or wanna-be Hipster, when they put a pair of large, obviously fake, glasses.

What kind of statement do people think they're accomplishing with these glasses? I'm a conformist phink?! I find these Hiprims to be ironic because the Hipsters are trying to be different by doing something so common now? They're not attractive in the least bit, it's just covering someone's face. I think individuality is something that should be cherished, but my dear Hipsters, there are other ways! Try being a fabulous first, not some second rate prototype! Some people may actually have these glasses for pragmatic reasons, but I feel like "posers" use them just for sport. But even if you do need glasses, WHY THESE?! They're just so silly I can't even stand them. My least favorite,however, is when a celebrity who is the farthest thing from Hipster in this whole wide world wears them and consequently thinks they're the coolest. Exhibit A: Joe Jonas. You're not a Hipster. You are a Disney Channel Star. Just because you wear Hiprims doesn't give you the right to deem yourself "Indie". Once you create thoughtful music, unlike "Burning Up" and "S.OS", maybe you'll be considered a Hipster.

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm intrigued with Hipsters. They're so now and some of my friends would be considered "artsy" and I love them so Hipsters are fine by me. In fact, I think it'd be awesome if everyone had a smidgen of Hipster in them: something off-beat and quirky but makes them their own person, fashion-wise or personality-wise. But Hiprims are so stupid. ALERT: You can be a Hipster without the rims! And you can still be cool and Indie and all of that fun stuff! This might sound after school special, but just be yourself. SHEESH.

Croppin' It

Although Spring RTW 2011 is not over yet, I have spotted an emerging trend: behold, the crop top. So many designers have been sending them down the runway: Michael Kors, Matthew Ames,  G-Star, Theyskens' Theory, and the list goes on and on and on. Some are really tight, while some are rather flowing.  Personally, I'm kind of sort of loving the crop top: it's fun, sexy, and can definitely be chic when worn right. But not to pull a Glamour dos and don'ts, but the success of a crop top totally depends on the persons body type.

I needed to do some math...I'm in the College of Optional Math...

When I originally saw cropped tops strutting down the New York Runways, I thought "oh shit, 90210 is back".

Like... I don't want the "mom jeans" to come back. But I think that this cropped top that KELLY TAYLOR is wearing works: she's not showing too much, which is perfectly kosher in my mind.

I'm even surprised with myself that I like this look because I dress rather modestly: my personal philosophy is always getting bigger size to obliterate the chances of having the awkward food baby bump after a buffet. But there's something undoubtedly chic about this look and it can look amazing in certain ways.

I think that it's crucial to wear a cropped top, one that is very cropped and very fitted, with a jacket or some high waisted, preferably loose, pants. I don't care if you're a Skinny McGee, nobody wants to see your flab. Or a jacket. SOMETHING TO MAKE YOU NOT LOOK LIKE A STRIPPER.

My favorite kind of cropped tops, however, are the really flowing ones that are shorter in the front and longer in the back. Those? Yeah...they're good. I saw a girl walking down Commonwealth with one of those tops matched with a pencil skirt. I thought that it had good proportions and was actually quite flattering.

Flowing or tight, this is a trend that I approved of!

Your Inner Fashion Animal

For the past few weeks, I have been completely infatuated with Tom Selby and "The Selby". I think his pictures are honest, authentic, and a wee bit quirky. He's taken pictures of FABULOUS people like Karl Lagerfeld and Christian Louboutin. But my absolute favorite thing of Selby, at this moment of time, is his "Animals in Fashion" illustrations. They trigger imagination, are very cute, and quite fabulous. These illustrations, drawn by Tom himself, incorporate a plethora of designers' names and their designs: Louis Vuitton, Michael Kors, Alexander McQueen, Alexander Wang, Dolce & Gabbana, Balenciaga, Proenza Schouler, Giles, Viktor & Rolf, and a several more. My personal favorites are the Vuitton-ed Woolly Mammoth (pictured and currently my background, NBD) and the D&G hedge-hog. And who says fashion isn't a jungle?
