Fall 2015 Trend: Victor, Victorian

You can just sense it: the nippy cold weather, the crunchy leaves underneath your feet and the lingering aroma of pumpkin spice lattes. Yes, it's fall. And while a new, chillier season may mean strictly whipping out the cozy sweaters for some, the dawn of autumn means something different for fashion's flock. Consider it the sartorial new year: out with the old trends and in with the new. To break down the hottest trends of the season, welcome to The Trendologist's fall guide. Each week, a new trend will be highlighted with shop-able must-haves.

Back in high school, she who donned all black and dramatic lipstick was known as "that weird emo outcast." In 2015? Thanks to several top designers -- and a sleek, Victorian twist -- your standard gothic girl has gotten a very chic makeover. She was everywhere on the fall runways. At Marc Jacobs, ominous hues were swapped out for warmer colors. But don't think this was a full departure from brooding style: the full skirts, nipped coats and vampy lip provided a sunny way for this trend to shine. Insider favorite Joseph Altuzarra brought this trend to the 21st century by juxtaposing sheer, high-necked lace tops with up-to-there slits, knee-high laced boots and loads of sequins. Looking for something more traditional? Turn to Ricardo Tisci's collection at Givenchy, where models cascaded down the runway in vampy velvets, brocades and faces adorned with gloomy jewels. The result? A juxtaposition between dark, ladylike chic and punk. Equally classic -- but with an undeniably softer, feminine touch -- was Alberta Ferretti's iteration of the trend: some looks were prim with fitted layers and other ethereal with touches of delicate lace and Elizabethan-worthy collars. With romantic ruching and sugar-coated shades, Alexander McQueen's variation of this trend blends salacious Victorian lady in waiting with the likes of an eery doll. Whether modern or traditional, but never too literal, there's an option for everyone on the sartorial spectrum.

It doesn't take a brain surgeon to realize that with one false (sartorial) move, this trend can veer into costumey territory. But with three factors in mind -- fit, material and color palette -- you can easily keep your outfit's Victorian inspiration forward-thinking. Instead of reaching for your closest body-con dress or baggy garb opt for a happy medium: ideal Victorian-inspired apparel should fit snug at the waist and a tad voluminous elsewhere. If you're looking for some reference, think back to Kirsten Dunst in Marie Antoinette as a loose inspiration -- but preferably without the heightened hair and corset.  Translation: shop for tailored coats and fitted, full-skirted dresses. While it's easy to think that the only way to go Victorian this fall is by investing in tons of black apparel, select a few pieces in other subtle neutral colors. For example, a maroon or navy dress is a great alternative to a creepy long-sleeved noir dress. Lastly, to give your trendy items a sophisticated twist with tactile fabrics. Forget polyester: wools, silks and lace will have your threads looking ultra-feminine and polished. But what about those mid-century-esque accessories? Use them sparingly and with modern pieces. Just like in Altuzarra's collection, a pair of lace-up booties will look super sexy with a high-slit skirt and a dainty cameo necklace can be styled with a cozy sweater for a fall-friendly ensemble.

Spring 2015 Trend: Ranger School

From Michael Jackson's slew of slim-fitting jackets to Olivier Rousteing's Balmain Army, the fashion industry tends to look to military uniforms for inspiration. This spring, however, this seemingly masculine fad has received a feminine make-over. If the pepto pink background wasn't enough of an indication, Marc Jacobs's collection of voluminous skirts and structured duster coats, all of which adorned with oversized gold buttons, was a telltale sign that army chic would veer ladylike this season. For Sacai designer Chitose Abe, the secret to embracing this season's troop motif was infusing feminine textiles: sheer paneling and floral prints were mixed with a traditional olive green that is militia-ready. While some designers opted for girly shapes and fabrics, others used shorter hemlines to give the classic uniform a ladylike twist. When it comes to designing masculine-inspired pieces for the modern day woman, No. 21's Alessandro Dell' Acqua used accessories to give each look a modern, yet girly, flair. With the help of pretty canary shoes and a belt to cinch the waist, dress that could've doubled as a shirt for a boy scout was fit for a lady. Craving a sexier alternative to this trend? Rag & Bone's Marcus Wainwright and David Neville offered the perfect solution. A bomber vest and up-to-there shorts are key ingredients for a daring summer getup. But if you're searching for an ultra glamorous way to sport this trend, look no further than Ralph Lauren's show. Whether paired with bright, silky tops or loads of jewels, the New York designer proved that military garb is just as suited for the runway as it is the battlefields.

Becoming an excellent soldier, let alone deeming yourself worthy of a Purple Heart, requires strength, courage, intuition and patriotism. Fortunately, sporting an army-inspired ensemble is much easier. Though unearthening your fitted military jacket is an easy, and economical, way to participate in the fad, there are many pretty pieces to feast your eyes on this spring. And from elongated vests to tailored shorts, this trend will appease any style savant's wallet. While you may be wary about this sartorial phenomenon, finding a flattering and feminine way to wear this trend is easy.  Cursed with a complexion that repels earthy neutrals such as khaki and olive green? Opt for a tailored piece in a subdued navy or black. Let's also not forget that there's a fine between a stylish, sophisticated ranger and childhood scout affiliate. Juxtapose your rough and tough apparel with luxe, feminine accessories: a sleek pump or extravagant pearl earring is a surefire way to up the sartorial ante.

Spring 2014 Trend: Hawaiian Florals

As anyone from the east coast will tell you, this has been one harsh winter. But rest assured, style savants, a warmer season is on its way. Need some proof? Spring's array of Hawaiian florals. This refreshing take on this motif is no surprise: resort collections from Jason Wu, Prada, and Fausto Puglisi hinted that we would be saying aloha soon. A few months later, and we were introduced to a multitude of different island flowers. While Marc Jacobs sent gothic prints down the runway and Marni's Consuelo Castiglioni welcomed an androgynous alternative, contemporary brands such as MSGM and Fausto Puglisi utilized a bright color palette. With crisp leather accessories and tailored silhouettes, Michael Kors taught his disciples that this print isn't just for island girls. So sorry beach dwellers, tastemakers are taking this pattern for a spin.

Just because this trend screams beachy chic doesn't mean you have to pair this print with puka shells, khakis, and an umbrella-clad frozen beverage. Instead, make a splash by sporting island florals from head to toe. To some, this ensemble may be a little "in your face"; however,  if you're going to make a statement, why not go all out? For those tamer trendsetters, compliment your printed top with equally vibrant separates, preferably in a hue that's featured in your beach blanket- ready piece. Update this look with some beaded accessories or unleash your inner island child with some very au courant birkenstocks. As for your beauty ritual? Rock a dewy complexion and slicked back locks.

Fall 2013 Trend: Pajama Party

On a chilly day, changing out of your cozy pajamas is a true struggle. Don't deny it, we've all been there. In addition to offering a slew of chic sweatshirts, fashion's top dogs have also released wearable versions of our favorite lounge apparel. From slinky slips to matching tops and bottoms, fall is essentially one big, sartorial pajama party. But unlike the threads you sport after a long day, we're ditching the flannel and poly-cotton blend, and are focusing on a luxe material: silk. The glamorous fabric is mixed with everything from vintage prints, to jewel tone hues, to sequin applique. When style megawatts such as Marc Jacobs and Alber Elbaz tell you that the most comfortable clothes in the world (dramatic, but true) are this season's leading trend, do you really have the right to reject this phenomenon? Exactly.

Just because this trend exudes effortlessness doesn't mean it's boring. In fact, sporting a pajama-inspired ensemble is arguably one of the riskiest moves a fashion trailblazer could make this season. So what's the best way to wear this trend? Like any other major fad, the options are endless. Style your pajama top with a pair of boyfriend jeans, pair your slip with a luxe coat, or match your top and bottom for a super fabulous occasion. Though there's no one way to rock this trend, it's very important that your lounge-worthy threads are event appropriate. While wearing a luxe slip dress will leave both style savants and potential beaus in awe, the pajama set is exclusively for a fashion-forward crowd. But, for your own sake, please avoid a lazy topknot or bed head-approved waves-- you shouldn't look like you actually rolled out of bed!

Fall 2013 Trend: Forward-Thinking Fur

All the great ones have sported fur: Kate Moss, Elizabeth Taylor, Cruella Deville, and Mrs. Robinson, just to name a few . Though wearing a leopard jacket is hardly a groundbreaking fad, the traditional trend is getting a major makeover this  fall. From your bag, to your booties, to your average tee, fur is everywhere. But the phenomenon does not stop there. With"notice me" color schemes and thought-provoking patterns, this season's take on fur will make everyone stop and stare.

If you didn't get the memo, this trend is for trailblazing fashionistas only. Easing into the font? Start off small with some fury accessories- a textured evening clutch turns any average ensemble into a thought-provoking look. But if you want to have a major fashion moment and sport a fur jacket or tee even, power to you. So what's a style savant to wear with this fur focal piece? Add some depth by blending delicious wools and knits into the mix. Whether you style with slim trousers or a wintry maxi skirt, this trend is the perfect way to score a warm, cozy, and undeniably chic outfit. Take that, Mrs. Robinson.

Spring 2014 Menswear: Would You Date That?

When it comes to menswear, style is so much more complicated than a simple suit and tie. As much as we gush over Brad Goreski and David Beckham's fantastic style, some menswear looks are just too much. In fact, some would even say undateable. In honor of the most recent menswear collections, I'm excited to revive "Would You Date That?"As a reminder, the rating system is the following:
0= No way!
10= Call me, maybe?
I'll be a first one to admit that fashion is one of the most powerful forms of expression out there, but when does it become too much? Keep reading!

Though sporting a matching suit is the ultimate way to score an effortlessly chic ensemble,  the pretty florals and the lace overlay are a bit much. They'd be ideal for a forward-thinking fashionista, but for a guy? No thank you! And I can't help but think those long vests eerily resemble ladylike dresses. A woman has her right to wear the proverbial pants in a relationship, but men should never opt for a pants-free outfit. However, even with the array of baggy pants, I must say that these looks are tailored to perfection. (Photo)
Deny it all you want, but guys' clothes are undeniably more comfortable than anything a girl owns. Whether it's that snuggly feeling or the faint Old Spice scent, you know it's true. As much as I'm loving these printed tops, this collection is not boyfriend-approved. Sexy as it seems, you wouldn't want this Casear ensemble to take you out to dinner. And while the tank top/briefs combo may be a great way to see your fella's amazing muscles, it's just too comfortable for the real world. Are we in the wrestling rink? No, so this needs to go. That being said, the crisp white suits are absolutely divine.  (Photo)
A pop of color is never a bad thing, yet this collection feels like a Kate Spade catalog. And while women may love the ultra girly brand for themselves, it' doesn't scream "boyfriend material." Though the silhouettes are simply timeless, the crazy color palette and excessive use of polka dots are quite clownish. Plus, what's happening with these strange necklines? To be blunt, the sweaters are sloppy and the infinity scarves are unnecessary. Even still, this collection as a whole revisits the typical, stylish man of the 1950s.  (Photo)
We shouldn't be asking ourselves what about this collection is dateable; we should be asking ourselves what about this collection is aesthetically pleasing. I know what you're thinking: harsh. Allow me to explain!  From the oversized jackets to the ever present flip flops, this whole collection was cringe-worthy.In fact, this show felt like a sad attempt to revisit the "Dawn of the Aquarius." Vivienne Westwood is such an innovative designer; however, she should stick to womenswear. It's just what she does best. (Photo)
There's something undoubtedly sexy about a classic suit.White suits, black suits, grey suits-- love them all!  Fortunately, Tomas Maier brings back this classic while adding modern pieces into the mix. Sometimes, I feel bad for fashion-forward guys: there's only so many ways to make a sartorial statement with a shirt and pants. Unlike many menswear collections that stick to the average sweater or collared button-down, Bottega Veneta gives men options. What a concept! With a plethora of short button-downs, saucy v-neck sweaters and funky vests to choose from, men now have easy-to-wear options that are both stylish and tasteful. (Photo)
Thom Browne: 1
For Thom Browne this season, milita is not just a mere source of inspiration. From massive aviators to general-approved silhouettes, each look is fit for a soldier. Though the artistic perspective deserves a round of applause, is this collection dateable? To dig a little deeper, are these military threads even marketable? As well-executed as this collection is, I'm curious to see how this overarching theme will do in the mass market. But let's go back to the dateable factor, shall we? Though we may love Leo in The Aviator, these looks resemble a Halloween costume. Maybe in October. (Photo)
"Jailhouse Rock," Danny Zuko, Cry Baby-- admit it, everyone has an everlasting crush on the stereotypical 1950's guy. Lucky for all of us Sandy wannabes, the latest Saint Laurent collection revisits this bad boy aesthetic. Without a doubt, the slew of standout jackets reign superior. Sporty bomber jackets? Please. Rebellious moto jackets? Swoon. And before you think this collection is a little too masculine for the catwalk, the brand unveils a ton of metallic blazers. However, the last chunk of looks takes the whole "bad boy" rep to a new level with bandanas and tough vests.Thought-provoking? Yes. Boyfriend material? Not so much.   (Photo)
Attention all Brad Goreski posers, Marc Jacobs's latest menswear collection is for you! With tailored suits in creamy sherbets, punchy dress shoes and a bevy of fun tops, this collection blends preppy with contemporary. Though several of the pieces are little too ostentatious, you can't deny that this overall collection is pretty brilliant. Want to dress your honey in this collection? Pair these colorful pieces with neutral classics.    (Photo)

Resort, Shesmort

Resort collection is one of those crucial summer staples. Personally, I never consider the summer to be a fashionable season; my hair is always frizzy, I'm super sweaty, and try to wear minimal clothing. Anti-glamour. Resort is a friendly reminder, and a shove if you will, that you should always be stylish. And Resort 2012 was no different. Sure there were some collections I didn't love- Bottega Venata, for example- but most of them were utterly fabulous. So, in order to give you the creme de la creme of Resort 2012, I give you my top eleven. Why eleven? Well, I was originally doing a top ten but then Prabal Gurung blew me away. The usual. I'm a strong believer of an inevitable beauty within everything; therefore, I'm not ranking these. I was enamored with all ten of these collections, for some reason or another, so they all win!

PUCCI
(Photo Cred)

Ever since I can remember, Pucci has always been the epitome of fun summer-wear: the prints, the colors, the copious amount of maxi dresses. If that doesn't say summer, then I surely don't know what is! And this Resort collection didn't fail me! I loved the pastels/white/ black color scheme. The colors suggest a very laidback summer; however the seriousness of some of the cuts and frequent suits gave us something in between. Just when you could write this collection off as boring and professional, you get something so summery and so right on. It's that versatility and juxtaposition that I truly loved about this look. I think the most juxtaposed, aka strongest, piece of the whole collection was this zebra-printed jacket with pastel blue pants. Somehow, it wasn't overbearing, just funky! Funky in a good way, nonetheless. And in general, I wholeheartedly approve of zebra prints with pastels. When I get some zebra print up in my closet, I will definitely be trying that! I also need pastels...hmmm...well clearly, I need to go shopping!

J.MENDEL

Before my lovely friends picked me up for our Hamptons escape, I was wearing my dark purple leather vest and my floral maxi. My mother, who I think I'm starting to portray as my fashion foil, hated that look. I guess it may have been too hot for that kind of attire, an aspiring fashionista NEVER listens to the weather, but I thought it looked cool. Anyways, J.Mendel totally backed me up on this  idea. Whenever I think of J.Mendel, I always think "Oh...so this is what Taylor Swift will be wearing to an awards show." Now don't get me wrong, I love soft and girly. But sometimes, I crave something a little more...tough.  That's exactly what J.Mendel gave us for this Resort season. Don't believe me? Just check out this colored fur! Who even does colored fur? J.Mendel, I'll tell you that! Of course, we also got our share of frilly feminine, but I'm so happy with the crisp silhouettes and color-blocking. I love how some of these looks may appear to be really minimalistic but, if you look closely enough, has some kind of detail to make it uber edgy and sharp.Thank you, J.Mendel, thank you very much!

LANVIN
(Photo Cred)
First and foremost, I think it's actually impossible to not love a design house when they incorporate BABIES. Not only were the model insanely cute, this girl was my personal favorite, but the clothes were undeniably chic! But besides the babies, I love the eclectic aspect of this collection. Yes, there are so many "rustic chic" looks; however, Lanvin gives us all a little something to tickle our fancies: metallics, ruffles, fringe, and some lace! My absolute favorite feeling when looking at a collection is not the tingly goosebump feeling, although that is quite fabulous, but the running thought of "this needs to be my closet." With those kind of collections, such as Lanvin Resort 2012, there's no need to pick out your favorite and obsess over it; all of the pieces are distinct enough that the whole sha-bang could create a wardrobe. I mean, do we need anymore reasons for Alber Elbaz should win the coveted Dior prize?

...
Just what I thought.

JASON WU
(Photo Cred)
I tend to think that I have a quasi-semi-totally- skewed view of reality. Prime example: I believe that I will one day go to the MET Ball, accompanied by Jason Wu. Why Wu? Why not! I'm consistently impressed by his collections. Resort, quite obviously, is no exception. In my mind, this looks like a modern version of Louis Vuitton's 2011 Resort. What's best about this whole collection is its mixture of chicness and wearability. In every collection, Wu successfully "edges up" a classic femininity. I don't look at this collection, wishing I had a place to wear this or that to. Instead, I think, "this is a better version of something I already have." For example, the hoodie? I'm not one to go crazy over sweat apparel, but I was obsessed with this! In short, everything Jason Wu does is pure magic.

NINA RICCI
(Photo Cred)

Okay this Nina Ricci collection may not be quintessential "resort," but I am enamored with it nevertheless. This sounds like a really dumb thing to say, but all of it is so pretty! The details on each piece is truly something. As a result, I become inspired. Not inspired in the sense that I want to change my look to "rich socialite," but inspired to accomplish all that I want so I can wear fabulous pieces like these. Anyways, more on the actual collection: it's so brilliant how the separates are paired in such a nonchalant manner. These looks aren't sloppy; however, these pieces are more approachable: Nina Ricci Resort 2012 is not just for Upper East Side Mommies!  My favorite look of this whole collection is the black mini with the lace front: the silhouette of the dress is so tea party, but lace makes it a bit more sultry. All in all, it was beyond.

NAEEM KHAN
(Photo Cred)
Well, this collection wins for funnest collection. Sometimes I consider going to the west coast after graduation; if I want to be a celebrity stylist, is there a better place than Hollywood? But there's one thing  that scares me about the west coast: color. Don't get me wrong, I do love some pops of color; however, I am urban at heart and do love my darks. The colors in this Naeem Khan collection inspired me so much!   Khan cleverly mixed extraordinary colors with rather simple silhouettes, thus creating beautiful pieces. The red brocade (it sure looks like brocade) mini? It was life-changing.  I thought it was really interesting how she had two looks with the same exact silhouette but different colors (see: here and here). A lot of times, people really do forget how fun fashion can be: it's always what's on trend and who will take over Galliano's position (not knowing is killing me slowly inside). Khan's collection, however, reminds us that fashion is about taking risks: wearing bold colors, sporting some feathers just because, and not being afraid to really sparkle. In my mind, this collection is all about bravery, which I love.

MARC JACOBS
(Photo Cred)
Usually, I'm never completely obsessed with a Marc Jacobs collection; however, I love love LOVE this resort collection. If you couldn't tell by this blog post,  I'm love juxtaposition in fashion; after all, that's what makes fashion unique and fun. This time, it's the juxtaposition between boyish and, well, feminine. This collection, more or less, represent a transition. The beginning,  really masculine and boring. Very Royal Tenenbaums, don't you think? Throughout the collection, the looks get more and more feminine: we see a full skirted dress and some sparkle until we finally get the finished product, a completely feminine look. I love when a collection tells a good story, or a collection has enough of a plot so-to-speak that I can create a story. Also, I really want that pink skirt.

GIAMBATTISTA VALLI
(Photo Cred)
I remember looking at the collection, convinced I would hate it.  But, when you really examine the details and review the collection as a whole, it's really something spectacular.  I don't know about you but during the summer,  it is imperative to be chic and comfortable: when I get sweaty and my hair starts to frizz, the last thing I want is a body-con dress. Unless I'm going out for a night on the town, that's another situation. Anyway, the shift-esque silhouette gave me extreme ease: Mr. Valli, you get me and every other aspiring fashionista suffering from heat exhaustion and humidity. But fear not fashion lovers, this collection is both pragmatic and stylish.  There are so many vibrant colors , quirky silhouettes, and so much leopard, you're bound to find something you love!  Speaking of leopard, don't you love the leopard hareem pants? I died. And the maxi dresses? Absolutely gorgeous.  It just goes to show you, don't judge a book by its cover!

CYNTHIA ROWLEY
(Photo Cred)
If anyone asks me to sum up Cynthia Rowley's Resort 2012 collection, I would simply say it's "the functional anti summer." There's a common misconception to think of Resort as solely shorts, mini dresses, and beyond fabulous bathing suits. In my mind, Cynthia Rowley but an end to that. While looking at her collection, I noticed that most of the looks were not your typical summer collection: the hemlines are longer and there are so many long sleeves. If the fabrics were changed, this collection  could  easily be Pre-Fall or maybe a small Fall RTW collection.  Even some of the colors weren't very Resort-esque. Yet it worked: this is a Resort collection and a fabulous one at that. What I loved about this collection is how some of these looks can easily carry you into the fall. And we aspiring fashionistas do have to wear an outfit more than once!

VERSACE
(Photo Cred)
Versace, like Pucci, is one of those brands I constantly associate with Resort wear. The label is always so fun and sexy and isn't that all we want to be during the summer? What I found most interesting about this collection was the frequent use of black and white. But black and white is so boring, right? Wrong. Through incredible silhouettes, unique prints, and your occasional splash of color, this collection was divine. And that's the beauty of Versace: the constant innovation to make something out of a potentially boring situation. As much as I love a LBD, they can get a little boring. But the Versace LBD this collection? The sheen on the fabric gave an allusion of leather: fun and sexy!  Some of these looks don't say, "this is so Resort;" however, they're totally summer friendly. And the detailing was absolutely phenomenal. J'adore.

PRABAL GURUNG

(Photo Cred)
The only way I can accurately express my love for this collection is with one word: fabulous. Everything about this collection was truly fabulous. The polka dotted looks were fabulous retro, like something you would see out of an old movie. But, mixed with a floral top, polka dots look so relevant. Amazing. And the red and black dress is my personal favorite. And the evening gowns were so beautiful. This is one of those collections that I can't pinpoint the exact reasons for loving it, but it's seriously outstanding.

Sorry this blog post took absolutely forever to complete, but Resort was awesome and there was so much of it!

Resort: Louis Vuitton

I was in the mood to do a good 'ol runway report. When I saw the Louis Vuitton Resort collection, I knew that I had to discuss it. I loved it. A lot. I'm starting to think that I should start doing reviews about collections I didn't like. But for now, let me praise about Vuitton. I just love what's been going on over there, thanks Marc! Everything's been well crafted, and some what nostalgic. This collection? It so reminded me of one of my favorite movies as a child: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. It was so traditional and proper, yet had a bit of fun and carni chic, shown via the stripes. It was fun, but didn't make me feel uncomfortable because it was TOO much fun. But not everything wasn't so : some pieces were a bit more progressive. Like the look with the matching leggings and jacket. It reminded me a lot of the outfit Leighton Meester wore last year to the MET Costume Gala...but I liked this one better. The silhouette was something creative, but the fabric was still relevant to the overall collection. All of the suits and dresses just made me want to watch Chitty Chitty Bang Bang all over again!
