Red Carpet Review: 5 Best Looks From the 2015 Academy Awards

As anyone who has an infatuation with the entertainment industry knows, the Academy Awards are the cinematic Super Bowl. Not only is it a night to celebrate critically-acclaimed movies and create pop culture moments (here's to you, John Travolta), this awards show is undeniably known for showcasing the fiercest celebrity fashion looks. However, this year's red carpet faced a sartorial lull. With fashion month in full swing, the most ensembles felt basic in comparison to the high-octane shows that are spamming every fashion fanatic's Instagram feed. Luckily, there were some get-ups that satiated the otherwise starved carpet. Check out the five best looks from last night's red carpet.

Emma Stone in Elie Saab: From dressy trousers to a stylish suit jacket paired with a sheer skirt, the nominee has been rocking gender-bender threads at this year's major award shows. Sporting a beaded Elie Saab dress is nothing new-- in fact, it feels as if every A-Lister has worn a similar outfit at some point in her career. However, the opened back and up-to-there slit adds a sultry flair to an otherwise conservative silhouette. What makes this look worthy of a spot on most best-dressed lists is the way Stone's stylist put this ensemble together. The matching glitzy bracelets and the dramatic wavy hair makes this outfit feel fresh and youthful. Cool girl Emma strikes again!

Juliane Moore in Custom Chanel: It's no secret that the Still Alice star would take home the treasured statuette at last night's ceremony. After years of nominated performances, it was irrefutable that this was Moore's year. Enter the perfect Oscar dress: shimmery, modern and ridden of any "basic" connotations thanks to the floral detailing along the neckline, hips and train. As most young girls dream of the perfect wedding dress, it's easy to imagine that aspiring actresses lose sleep over what they would wear to accept their Academy Award. "It has to be timeless, but something that will also get me a spot on most best dressed lists," they probably say. "My makeup has to be fresh and though I want to wear Cartier or Fred Leighton, I can't be dripping in diamonds--it'll take focus away from my Oscar." This outfit is everything an award-winning actress should wear. The slicked back updo and scarce (yet decadent) jewels complete a truly timeless look.

Keira Knightley in Valentino Haute Couture: If the 2015 awards season had superlatives, The Imitation Game star would definitely win "most ethereal pregnant woman on the red carpet." With her milkmaid disaster from the Golden Globes as an exception, the expectant mother's outfits consistently offered an admirable ease and comfort without looking too maternity. This Valentino Haute Couture dress was whimsy enough to fulfill Knightley's effortless aesthetic, yet formal enough to be Oscar-appropriate. Equally spot-on was the actress's beauty regime: her waves were coiffed to perfection and the fuss-free makeup perfectly complemented the dress.  Brava!

Rosamund Pike in Givenchy: As a relative red carpet rookie, try saying that five times fast, the Gone Girl star is exciting to watch. Though she doesn't receive as much praise as sartorial stars such as Lupita Nyong'o, Pike is taking risks by sporting balloonish silhouettes, touchable textures and the occasional pop of color. Opting for monochromatic is a sure-fire way grab the attention of style savants; however, sporting a completely red look on the red carpet is dicey. Can we say too much red? But with a textured dress, thin-strapped shoes and a subtly pink pout, the nominee successfully avoided a major faux pas. On the contrary, Pike gives a conventional red carpet gown a trendy twist.

Margot Robbie in Saint Laurent: In the fashion world, chic and sexy are rarely used in one sentence. However, thanks to the good graces of the Focus star, Robbie's outfit is in fact both chic and sexy. Her secret? Pairing a plunging neckline with ultra-stylish add-ons. While the delicately draped neckline turns up the sex appeal in a sophisticated manner, the matte red lip and stunning Van Cleef and Arpels necklace are everything a fashion nerd dreams of. Without this power combo, the dress would look like a slutty Stevie Nicks outfit and the add-ons would be Man Repeller-worthy. Together, the pieces are kind of amazing and create a sartorial force to be reckoned with. Many critics compare Robbie's look to a reinvented Michelle Pfeiffer, but this budding actress is in a league of her own.

Red Carpet Review: 2014 Academy Awards

The Oscars are a big deal. Whether you're a complete movie buff, a self-described fashion nerd, or both, this is our Super Bowl Sunday with an ultra glam, feminine twist. With remarkable movies from Dallas Buyers Club to 12 Years a Slave and A-Lister nominees, such as Leoandro DiCaprio and Cate Blanchett, this year's soiree was destined to be pretty amazing. But with some awkward accessories and man capris, there was definitely a fair share of good and bad looks. Want a second look at all memorable fashion? Living under a rock? Check out this year's hits and misses.

The Best

Cate Blanchett in Armani Privè: Everyone knows that the Blue Jasmine starlet can do no wrong; however, this Armani Privè gown is seriously major. The relatively bare neckline is refreshing after a season of lace collars and halter necklines. Blanchett's cutting-edge sartorial reputation is beautifully mixed with a feminine aesthetic. The thoughtful embellishments, pastel earrings, and soft curls are both cohesive and elegant. Even though the nude hue may blend into the actress's skin tone, the mesmerizing texture is a game changer.

Julia Roberts in Givenchy: Though the August: Osage County star has never been known for her ultra chic fashion choices (except for the Valentino), this is quite incredible. Not only is this lace number age appropriate, and far from matronly, it's a classic example that black can be show-stopping in a sea of sequins, jewel tones, and neutrals. The lively peplum is perfect for hiding any potential problem areas, and the plunging (but modest) neckline revitalizes the little black dress. Oh, and let's not to forget to swoon over her beauty regime. California blonde locks and a smokey eye are absolutely ideal with this look. 

Kate Hudson in Versace: Behold: the flower child's version of Gwyneth Paltrow's famous cape dress.  It's been a few years since Hudson has graced the glamorous carpet, and her award show comeback was a major success! Though the plunging neckline, which was a major trend on this red carpet, the cape gives this ensemble a sophisticated twist. On the beauty front, Hudson sizzled with the Jessica Rabbit-approved locks. J'adore.

Naomi Watts in Calvin Klein: The Impossible star is not one to sport a vibrant colored dress; however, she always looks great in metallics and neutrals. Luckily, this ceremony was no exception. The textured fabric energizes the otherwise minimalist ensemble. Undeniably, what makes this outfit truly something spectacular is the use of geometric accessories. The art deco statement necklace is perfectly paired with an edgy, semi-quilted silver clutch. Not to mention the straight locks and berry lip make her look insanely chic. But then again, when isn't Naomi Watts the epitome of chic?

Jennifer Lawrence in Christian Dior Couture: Finally. With the exception of her SAG Awards ensemble, Lawrence's awards season style was a bit, erm, lacking. Who can forget that tragic Golden Globes fiasco? However, this look screamed one thing: she's back. Since she tends to wear many princess silhouettes, it's refreshing to experience a transition to clean, sophisticated shapes. The vibrant red hue and defiant hair are very "power woman" while the peplum keeps this look fun and feminine. For a finishing touch, the American Hustle sports a matching lip and fierce necklace. Brava! 

Kerry Washington in Jason Wu: Well, the Scandal star definitely redeemed herself from the Golden Globes. This whole look perfectly meshes gothic glam and ethereal beauty. Washington rarely wears dark hues, especially purple, so this color choice was a pleasant surprise. Paired with the vampy lip, this look is risk; however, it works! The airy silhouette is the perfect way to show off her beauty. And that hair? Brings the whole look together. Welcome back, Kerry, I've missed you. 

Lupita Nyong'o in Prada: Move over, Beyoncè: there's a new flawless chick in town. Just out of curiosity, can the Academy Award winner do any wrong? She's completely killed it the entire awards season, and gave us the perfect princess moment at the Academy Awards. First of all, this Nairobi blue looks phenomenal with the actress's skin complexion, and the fluttery silhouette is something completely different for the budding fashionista. Though a plunging neckline is normally scandalous, she has a certain body type that makes this neckline look 100 percent fashion. Nyong'o smartly accessories with delicate jewels and a girly headband.

Sandra Bullock in Alexander McQueen: A vision in midnight blue, it seems as if Sandra Bullock masters every red carpet she steps on lately. Not only is this gorgeous hue extremely refreshing, the soft draping in the front is absolutely impeccable. As for accessories, the Gravity actress proved that less is more with a simple bangle and ear cuff. 

The Worst

Emma Watson in Vera Wang: Doesn't this look a bit mumsy? The starlet is known for sporting cutting-edge ensembles; however, this dress falls flat. Not only is this color palette extremely dull, the hair is messy, and not even a stylish messy. And where are the accessories? A dress that plain deserves a statement necklace or an amazing ear cuff.As a young, bonafide fashionista, this is too safe. Show some skin! Play with textures! Do something to amuse us! Anything!

Margot Robbie in Saint Laurent: There's gothic chic, and then there's gothic creep. The dark hair, noir dress, and vampy lip--it's just way too much for the pale skinned actress. And to top it all off, this dress is so basic! A strapless black dress? Groundbreaking. How did this go so wrong? Robbie aced the Golden Globes! A note for the future, Margot, opt for a lighter dress when darkening your hair! She would've looked amazing in a blush Elie Saab number.

Liza Minelli: I don't care who you are: streaky hair and a matching cobalt blue top and pants situation is never okay. And I seriously mean never.

Pharrell Williams in Lanvin: I will be the first to admit that I love the "Happy" singer's style risks, but capris to the Academy Awards is just unacceptable. Actresses don't even flaunt that leg (with the obvious exception Angelina circa 2012). Save showing off your leg tattoo for the summer or next year's Grammys! A printed pant or metallic sports coat would've been the perfect way to take a style risk. That being said, I think I can speak for everyone when I say I'm relieved the hat made a comeback. 

Amy Adams in Gucci: A classic case of "right dress, wrong accessories." Though the American Hustle star looks absolutely radiant in this navy dress, the accessories are all wrong. Kitschy pink jewels mixed with a chunky gold cocktail ring? No thank you! This look would've been on my best dressed if she chose canary golden or emerald jewels. 

Angelina Jolie in Elie Saab: Well, this outfit just aged herself 12 years. Though Elie Saab couture gowns are usually a surefire way to score a spot on any coveted best dress list, this looks awfully matronly. It's like the Versace gown's old, serious mother. But naturally, the megawatt star's makeup is seriously perfection. 

Olivia Wilde in Valentino: As much as this pains me, it's yet another case of "right dress, wrong accessories." The silhouette and white detailing is undeniably chic on the very pregnant Wilde, but the clashing jewels are terrible. Layered bangles, statement earrings, and a chunky cocktail ring? Way too much! Let it be known that accessories make or break any outfit. Coco Chanel once declared that all classy women must take off one accessory before they leave the house. Olivia Wilde, you are no exception to this rule.

The Oscars: Whoever Throws Powder on Burberry is Seriously Disturbed

As the Oscars begin- loved the opening scene, by the way- I begin writing my fashion round up. I've just compiled my best and worst dressed lists. I have to say, this year's fashion is definitely not what I expected; however, can  you ever really predict fashion? Just like the Sacha Baron Cohen-Ryan Seacrest red carpet incident, you cannot. I do have to say that the red carpet disaster angered me: I wonder what Christopher Bailey thinks about it? Anyway, let's cut to the chase and talk fashion, shall we?

THE WORST

Sherri Shepherd: Although I love the color with her skin tone, this dress is way too much. The jewels on the dress? no thank you. The keyhole neck? A major fashion faux pas. Why would she ever wear that black bra with this dress? Terrible. (Photo Cred)

Berenice Bejo (Elie Saab): As much as I love Elie Saab's 2012 Spring Couture, I just don't like how it's worn on the red carpet. It's a gorgeous dress; however, the styling is off. The hair- especially braided- with the beautiful mint color? Not feeling it.  The clutch was too matchy-matchy, which I thought was boring. (Photo Cred)

Viola Davis (Vera Wang):  Absolutely not. I hate the way the bodice fits her: she looks as if she's going to burst at any moment! And the chiffon pleats are terrifying. It just looks awkward. But, to give this review some positivity, her makeup and hair is phenomenal. I love how she's rocking her natural locks. You go girl!  (Photo Cred)

Jenny From the Block (Zuhair Murad):  I think she's getting a little too old to wear such a revealing dress.  The uptight bun isn''t a fun juxtaposition; instead, it's a little confusing.  This is the Oscars: keep it classy! This ensemble would've been great for the Grammys, but not the Oscars. (Photo Cred)

Emma Stone (Giambattista Valli): I hate doing this, but I have to: it's how I feel. As a lot of critics have been saying, I think this ensemble is too similar to the Balenciaga dress Nicole Kidman wore to the Oscars a couple years ago. It almost seems like a not as chic repeat. The chunky Louis Vuitton bracelet is overbearing. Also, I think there's too much red: the carpet, the hair, the dress, the huge bow on the dress. It's just way too much! (Photo Cred)

Shailene Woodley (Valentino): As much as I love long sleeved dresses, I don't like this one at all. All the ivory completely washes her out. The detailing on the bodice looks unfitted and just awkward. The updo makes this look super matronly. And no jewels? Boring! A bold lip or even a pair of statement  earrings would've made this look much better. (Photo Cred)

Anna Faris (Diane von Furstenberg): I eye this dress every time I'm in Diane von Furstenberg; however, not for this red carpet. I think this look can  either look too flashy,  oddly matronly, or awesome. Surprisingly, this dress did nothing for Faris: she looked rather heavy. As much as I love that blunt bob, it doesn't work with this styling. The longer earrings just look awkward. This dress would've been much better at the MTV Movie Awards or the Grammys, especially with a sleek ponytail. (Photo Cred)

 Natalie Portman (Dior): Love the jewels, hair, and makeup; however, I have very big issues with this dress. First of all: polka dots to the Oscars? What was her stylist thinking?  She just looks frumpy. Portman should've just stuck with Rodarte: a good 'ol Rodarte and Portman collaboration never disappoints me. (Photo Cred)



THE BEST

Stacy Keibler (Marchesa): Can we say 'Golden Goddess'?  How flawless does Keibler look in this Marchesa?  The simple silhouette is perfectly paired with the rosette and the asymmetrical shoulder. What I appreciate most about this look is the sense of balance: the hair and the rosette work together to create a cohesive and balanced look. Keeping the jewels at a minimal is perfect for this look because it's so shiny. In fact, statement jewels would've ruined this ensemble. Fantastic. (Photo Cred)

Michelle Williams (Louis Vuitton): There are no words to properly state how gorgeous she looks. This color is so stunning, but not overbearing.I'm obsessed with the subtle ruffles and the peplum: the perfect amount of detailing. Bold bracelets would've made this outfit too midsection heavy, so I love  the dainty necklace. That bright lip makes this look cohesive and entertaining from head to toe! All these components are so reminiscent of William's  Vera Wang dress at the 2006 Academy Awards, but that's alright with me! (Photo Cred)

Rose Byrne (Vivienne Westwood): So I would like to be Rose Byrne in my next life: I'm obsessed with her style and, as always, she rocked such an innovative dress. This dress is just like Anna Faris' outfit...but better. This asymmetrical neckline and the column silhouette makes black sequins sexy. Since her bob isn't as pinned to her face, Bryne's dangling earrings complement her short do. Her makeup, jewels, shoes, and clutch all worked together to form a truly glamorous and sexy look. Tina Fey (Carolina Herrera): I think Derek Blasberg describes this look the best. Finally, Tina Fey is coming into her own and dressing to impress. I love the peplum on this Herrera dress. The glam bun and standout blue jewels? Forget about it.However, he dark color and the flared skirt stick with her original fashion aesthetic.  (Photo Cred)

Angelina Jolie (Atelier Versace): Sexiest dress of the night? Absolutely yes.The high slit plus the structured bodice gives us the perfect mix of sultry and fashion forwardness. The lack of jewels makes this look more simplistic and relaxed. Can we talk about the bright lip and flowing hair for a second? Va va voom!  Let's be honest: you would pop your leg like that if you were wearing that dress. (Photo Cred)

Milla Jovovich (Elie Saab): Such a stunning red carpet moment. This look is seriously flawless: the asymmetrical shoulder is absolutely divine and that beading is out-of-this-world. The silhouette, not to mention the hair, epitomizes old school glamour. The phenomenal red lip spices up the monochromatic look. (Photo Cred)

Penelope Cruz (Giorgio Armani): This is my favorite Penelope Cruz look ever. The color is beautiful and that silhouette is so classic. The shoulders really show off that old school glamour. Her classic makeup, glamourous hair, and dainty necklace finish off this look with a bang! (Photo Cred)

Jessica Chastain (Alexander McQueen): Definitely one of my favorites from the night. This is so different for Chastain; however, it was a risk worth taking! I love the mix between black and gold, especially with that fantastic print. Her polished down do and fresh makeup  adds a hint of girly glamour. She literally looks perfect.  (Photo Cred)

Octavia Spencer (Tadashi Shoji): First of all, she won!  Second of all, I'm obsessed with this dress. I love the super flattering silhouette of this dress. The beading moves towards her stomach, making this dress even more flattering. White looks absolutely gorgeous with her complexion! Also, her hair and makeup is sultry and classic at the same time. How? I couldn't tell you. As a side note, I would really like those earrings in my jewelry box. (Photo Cred)

Gwyneth Platrow (Tom Ford): Such a stunning ensemble. I love how Platrow is always willing to take  risks. What makes this look work is the straight silhouette. If there was anymore volume, the cape would look terrible. Even without the cape, this dress is effortlessly chic. That strong cuff gives this Tom Ford attire that dash of glamour that the night requires. This red carpet ensemble will go down in history.(Photo Cred)

The Style Files: That's Alright, I Found a Martyr in my Bed Tonight

As you probably know by now, I'm obsessed with Fun. Their album, "Some Nights," is literally life-changing. I actually haven't listened to other music all week. Anyway,  one of my favorite songs from this album is "Some Nights." It's essentially an alternative version of The Lion King soundtrack. Yes, it's that intense.

Style Spiration: The Oscars 

In honor of the Oscars- can you believe they're today- I'm dedicating this edition of  Style Spiration to some of my favorite Oscar looks. 

Natalie Portman at the 2009 Oscar Awards (Rodarte):  I can't even deal with how stunning this is. Not only is this dress perfectly executed, the quasi beaded bodice is gorgeous. What makes this look for me is the fabulous makeup. It's not overbearing by any means; however, it's so innovative. Pink lip and purple eyeliner? Fantastic. (Photo Cred)

Mila Kunis at the 2011 Academy Awards (Elie Saab):  This was definitely one of my favorite dresses from last year: the light purple works so well with the delicate lace. The minimal jewels keeps the focus on the dress' gorgeous detailing. Some people had issues with the light lace over her chest, but I think it makes lace look sexy. Translation? It makes the impossible possible. The glamourous hair and the feminine makeup finish this look perfectly. (Photo Cred)

Charlize Theron at the 2005 Academy Awards (John Galliano for Dior):  I'm going crazy over this detailing as well as the color. Nobody ever wears a color like this to the Oscars. This look is so successful because there's a fun play between smooth pieces and textured pieces. Her simple clutch acts as a neutral and balances the dress' ruffles and her super-intense hair. (Photo Cred)

 Michelle Williams at the 2006 Oscars (Vera Wang): Her stylist aced this look from head to toe, William's ensemble is daring and Oscar-appropriate. First of all, I love the yellow because it's so bold. And mixed with that red lip? Forget about it! The detailled neckline, the draped waist, and that fantastic train add so much style to a simple silhouette. Though I think this look would be perfectly fine without the necklace, it adds that dash of personal style. Also the low side bun? To die for.(Photo Cred) 

Nicole Kidman at the 2007 Oscars (Balenciaga): This is the definition of red carpet glamour. The simple silhouette plus that avant garde bow? Stunning. Also, that red is such show-stopper. To add an extra dash of glamour, Kidman piles on the sparkly jewels. Though that may seem like a fashion faux pas, her straight hair neutralizes the flashy bracelets.(Photo Cred)

Cate Blanchett at the 2011 Oscars (Givenchy): Serious question: can Cate Blanchett do any wrong? This dress isn't just stylish, it's a piece of art. I'm still going crazy over all of the intricate detailing. And that random dash of yellow? To die for. Thankfully, Blanchett's stylist knew to keep the rest of this look minimal. Her sleek hair, natural makeup, and dainty jewels make this look heaven on the red carpet. (Photo Cred)

The Weekly

• Emma Stone at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon (Elie Saab): This look is so classic and youthful at the same time. The silhouette screams girly and the detailing is beyond fabulous. To keep this look cohesive, Stone's wavy hair and pink lip adds even more femininity. The nude shoes elongate the leg and keeps the focus on the gorgeous dress. 
• Michelle Williams at the Mulberry Dinner (Mulberry): Sultry versus sweet! I love the play between the leather and lace. And the silhouette? Fantastic.  Keeping this look monochromatic allows us to focus on the fabulous details. The pretty pink lip gives an appropriate splash of color. 
• Kate Beckinsale at the Costume Designer's Guild Awards (Vivienne Westwood): Only Kate Beckinsale can make a Vivienne Westwood dress mainstream and super glamourous. The draping plus the dramatic neckline is too good to be true. I also am obsessed with this light grey because it's both versatile and innovative. The statement earrings and the super glam hair keeps the focus on that fabulous neckline. J'adore.
