Red Carpet Review: Best 8 Looks From the 2014 CFDA Awards

Rihanna knows how to add shock value. If it's not her salacious music, or her Instagram woes, the public is always in awe of what the singer wears. Naturally, heads turned when Rihanna strutted down Monday's CFDA Awards's carpet in a sheer sequined Adam Selman number. Too racy? Too perfect? Days later, and it's still tough to say; however, one thing is for sure: Rihanna's dress is a conversation piece. But don't be fooled, style savants, there were several other CFDA-approved outfits that deserve to be gushed over. Check out the eight best looks from Monday's star-studded event. 

Liya Kebede in Wes Gordon: Yes, the CFDA Awards is second best occasion for any fashion plate to throw on a beautiful evening gown, but there's something surprisingly refreshing about the model's simplistic Wes Gordon dress.  The outfit on its own looks like a young Carolina Herrera while the white sandals make this look completely fearless. Kebede's extra voluminous curls with the sleek number give this look an after hours aesthetic. Obsessed.

Olivia Palermo in Ann Taylor: The former reality star is never one to shy away from a fashion risk, as they always seem to pay off for Palermo. However, sporting a lower market brand to such a high-profile event is new for the tastemaker, yet it works. Palermo adds depth to a monochromatic look by mixing different textures from head to toe. The lace-accented shoes continue the textural look, not to mention are also super chic.With a beachy bun and loads of gold jewels, Palermo proves that she can make any brand (and perhaps any look) a smash hit.

Ashley and Mary Kate Olsen: In their own designs, the stylish duo is an obvious choice for the evening's best dressed list. Known for their perfectly coordinating outfits, each twin gives her own twist to the long-sleeved black dress and emerald jewels. The result? Two looks that are effortless, sophisticated, and expresses two different personal styles. Brava.

Joan Smalls in Prabal Gurung: From short hems to plunging necklines, Smalls is never afraid to sport something sexy on the red carpet. The model's ethereal, yet provocative, Prabal Gurung gown from Monday's awards ceremony was a bonafide hit. While the chopped bodice and high slit scream vixen, the sleek gold accessories and Smalls's bangs give this gown a fashion-forward twist. Plus, the midnight blue acts as the ultimate neutral. So major.

Olivia Wilde in Decades LA: While fringe ran rampant at the Spring 2014 collection-- Altuzarra, Emilio Pucci, and Derek Lam, to name a few-- but translating this trend to the mass audience is a challenge. However, Wilde's take on this trend is spot on. Not only is the long fringe unapologetically glam, the asymmetrical shoulder prevents tragic flapper moment. And can we just reflect that she is a new mom in that curve-hugging number. Where can we find the name of her Pilates instructor?

Marion Cotillard in Dior: Though the actress's designer choice is no surprise, Cotillard's look is everything. While the shift silhouette and two-toned shoes scream girly mod, the dimensional components give this outfit a modern flair. But of course no ensemble is complete without a face full of makeup... or is it? On the contrary, Cotillard's au natural look is oddly refreshing and allows onlookers to focus on the dress. 

Karlie Kloss in Band of Outsiders: Wild, wild west chic takes a metropolitan turn as Karlie Kloss pairs a handkerchief-esque dress with exotic lace-up heels. Zestier than the model's signature ladylike frocks, this gown is a fashion risk worth taking. Though the silhouette is relatively minimalist, the cut-outs and gentle print rejigger Kloss's personal style. Let's not forget that the semi-sloppy top knot is the perfect finishing touch.

Jessica Stam in Giulietta: Unless you haven't received the memo, jumpsuits are the new evening gowns. There's a particular easy je ne sais quoi about playsuits that are perfect for the summer. Donning a monochromatic look, Stam aces this trend. The subtle peplum and keyhole neckline create the perfect mélange of sexy and sweet, which is undeniably fashion-forward. Stam's black jewel accessories produces a high-contrast look. On the beauty front, the model's metallic shadow and sleek bun are ideal for this warm season.

The Style Files: Something Unknown to Me Makes You What You Are

It's fair to say that I'm not taking the passing of Davy Jones vey well. No, this isn't me being sarcastic: I'm legitimately upset. When I was little, I was obsessed with retro TV shows. Obviously, the Brady Bunch was my number one.  From the afternoons after pre-school to the nights where I was plauged with chicken pox, Davy Jones' Girl was my jam. I would dance myself silly- also known as doing the Marsha- to that song and still do (especially to the Very Brady Movie's version). So this week's song had to be Girl because, let's be honest, I probably would've had a crush on him if I was a teen during the 1970s.

Style Spiration: Gwyneth Platrow

Are you still going crazy over Gwyneth Paltrow's sleek, superstar, scene-stealing, spectacular Tom Ford moment from last week's Academy Awards? Well, I am. The more that I think about it, the  more that I realize how much of a trendsetter Gwyneth truly is. During her career, she's had so many red carpet moments that we will always remember. What's so interesting about all of these looks is that they're all progressive and sleek. They all make a statement without crossing the line. How does a trip down memory lane sound to all of you? Let's spend this Sunday remembering (and drooling) over all of Gwyneth's looks.

 At the 1999 Academy Awards (Ralph Lauren): There's no better way to start of this review. Whether you tuned into the 1999 Oscars or not, you know this dress if you're the least bit interested in red carpet glamour. From the color to the silhouette to the jewels, everything about this look is so feminine. I find this so ironic because nowadays, Gwyneth dresses super sleek and modern. Even though this dress is undeniably feminine, the overall simplicity is timeless. (Photo Cred)

Being fabulous in 1996 (Gucci): I think Gwyneth has a knack for picking out super powerful Tom Ford designs.Perfectly executed, velvet, and in a luscious red? Hold me back: it's almost too much to handle. To prevent a Chuck Bass moment- though I do love Chuck Bass and everything he wears- she kept the rest of this look simple: the makeup, the hair, the accessories and even the blouse underneath the suit. In short: Gwyneth did menswear before it was cool.(Photo Cred)

At the 2008 Cannes Film Festival (Chanel): How breathtaking is this look? Whoever styled this did a fantastic job of giving this ensemble some movement and excitement from top to bottom. The arrangement of the glamour-packed sparkles made this look glamourous and not overbearing. Her updo and feminine makeup allows us to focus on that beyond neckline without completely ignoring Gwyneth. (Photo Cred)

At the 2007 Academy Awards (Zac Posen):  I usually don't love peach, but this is fantastic. The high-hugging silhouette and the sheer components of this dress are to die for: this dress commands attention without it being overly aggressive. The non-matching bracelets on each arm give this look a healthy dash of quirky symmetry, which I love. The long locks keep this look refreshing and fun. Oh, and that red lip? • Mila Kunis at Dior 2012 Fall RTW (Dior): I know, I know: I still need to cover London, Milan, and Paris fashion week. But how amazing is this look? Mila destroys the stereotypical European look by wearing something light and overtly feminine. I love how she plays with pastels and whites as well as texture. The straight hair and black belt give this look a very Parisian feel. 
• Claire Danes at Vanity Fair's Academy Awards After Party (Valentino): Yes, my jaw actually dropped when I saw this. The dress is so extravagant and timeless. The minimal jewels allow us to focus on the dress, which deserves as much attention as humanly possible. The glamourous updo and the matching pink lip brings this whole look together.
• Rosie Huntington- Whiteley at Heathrow (Vanessa Bruno, Burberry): I love love LOVE this take on personal style. Navy is such an unappreciated color so I love how she incorporates that Vanessa Bruno blazer into her ensemble. Don't be fooled: navy and black look fabulous together. Rosie finishes this look off with a leopard scarf: my kind of fashionista! 
• Olivia Palermo at Dior 2012 Fall RTW: This look gives me goosebumps. Olivia Palermo always knows how to create a look that is clean, eclectic, and fashion-forward. I'm obsessed with the mix of that printed dress and her cage heels. The cardigan gives this look some Parisian chicness and that side fish tail braid? Too good to be true! 
• Selena Gomez at Vanity Fair's Academy Awards After Party (Dolce & Gabbana): This look is heaven. This form fitting Dolce & Gabbana really shows off her feminine figure in the classiest way possible.  love that soft grey with her complexion and the light lip. Should we talk about that beading? To die for. I love her shorter do with those drop earrings. Overall how sophisticated does Selena look? Now that her boy toy is legal, I suppose she's allowed to dress like a woman.

The Style Files: Because We are, We are the Shining Stars

Without a doubt, Fun is one of my favorite bands of the moment. I'm so excited for their new album, Some Nights, which comes out in a couple of weeks. They recently released this song on You Tube and I love it.  Oh and another thing, Glee has nothing on Fun. Absolutely nothing.

STYLE SPIRATION: Whitney Houston 

By now, everyone's heard of Whitney Houston's tragic death. While I wasn't alive during her musical height, her legacy and talent is undeniable. Yes, Whitney wasn't famous for her fashion; however, I wanted to open up this section to honoring the great icon. 

How phenomenal does Whitney look?  The flowing A-line skirt plus the big bow screams 1980's.. .and I kind of love it.The tight curls keeps this look refreshing and youthful.  (Photo Cred)

Okay, so this look may be a little bit...outdated; however,  I'm drawn to this like a mouth to a flame. The combination of a saloon-inspired skirt and a diva-licious, sequined top is so divine.  This look could've been terrible, but Whitney's effortless approach to outfit made this incredible. (Photo Cred)

Even in her later years, Whitney could still rock a phenomenal sequined frock. The use of minimal jewels as well as the super glam hair and makeup is inspiring. (Photo Cred)

THE WEEKLY 

• Olivia Palermo at the Carlo Pazolini Party (Not Determined): Can we even talk about the edginess of this outfit? Love.  The two-toned trousers are absolutely out-of-this-world amazing. I love how Olivia mixed the leather blazer with that metallic sweater. Such a stellar combination. Even though there's a huge array of tones and colors, it's not abrasive. On the contrary, the yellow clutch provides a splash of color. Perfection.
• Solange Knowles at the Runway to Win Launch Party (Vera Wang): Oh my fashion gods, I'm literally so obsessed with this look. It's not even funny. The feminine print plus the use of peplum? Fashgasm. The perfect blend of sexiness and style.And that red lip? Beyond stellar.
• Rose Byrne at Sandro's NYC Boutique Launch (Sandro): Gorgeous. Rose is such a stylish superstar and I love this play with black and nude. The whole look is really subtle and focuses on the craftsmanship of each piece. I  also don't love her bob, so I'm liking this alternative. Fantastic.

The Style Files: I'm Not a Part of a Red Neck Agenda

Stress enables people to do many things: smoke, drink, or maybe even eat an obscene amount of food. When I'm stressed, I love to listen to a good show tune. I know, who am I? With papers, projects, and finals galore this week, I developed a strange love for the Green Day musical, American Idiot. It all began when I started You Tube stalking John Gallagher Jr.: he's so cute! Now, I can't stop listening to their remedition of "American Idiot." I know I could've of easily made the song of the week Green Day's original version, I'm a blatantly honest person and don't like lying. Plus, this quirk is too funny to ignore.

STYLE SPIRATION: Rachel McAdams
From Mean Girls to Red Eye, I always find myself loving Rachel McAdams. She's a great actress and a super fabulous fashionista. If you don't believe me, scroll down to the weekly.  This week's edition of the Style Spiration is dedicated to Rachel McAdams for always being a classy actress and fabulous fashionista.

At the most recent Cannes Film Festival (Marchesa): I want this dress for my own- future- collection of Marchesa dresses. Amazing. The cherry red lace adds the perfect amount of drama to the nude background. I could picture this dress being a little provocative; however, I think it's so chic and dramatic and perfect. Paired with the feminine makeup and old Hollywood glamour hair? Perfection.  (Photo Cred)

At a 2006 Oscar Ceremony (Miu Miu): I feel as if most blondes stay away from yellow, but I love this color on her. I love how simple the silhouette and the detailing on the bodice is fantastic. The relaxed updo works with the dress so well. Since there's a lot of sparkle on the dress' bodice, the minimal jewels is good.  Last but not least, that red lip? It's everything.  (Photo Cred)

McAdams Food Shopping (Her own clothes, shocker): I just love how casual this look is; however, she's not wearing your typical sweat pants. The black accessories, knee highs, and boots really make the dress the look's focus. There's something pretty funky about that boot  and knee-high combo. I kind of like it, though. (Photo Cred)

At the 2010 Academy Awards (Elie Saab Haute Couture): Amazing. The dramatic skirt with the subtle floral print is brilliant. I love how she kept her hair up and the dangling earrings are the perfect amount of jewels for this look. Lovely. (Photo Cred)

THE WEEKLY

• Rachel McAdams at the Sherlock Holmes sequel premiere (Marchesa): My jaw actually dropped when I saw this look. She always makes a splash on the red carpet, which I love, love, LOVE.  That silver ,mixed with the light pink light and blonde hair? Ah-maze-zing. Can we even begin to talk about that striking back? I'm going crazy over this look.   From the dress' length to the stunning details on the Marchesa- when it comes to fabulousity, leave it to Georgia Chapman- the look is so wintry! Beautiful.
• Emma Watson at Lancome event in Hong Kong (Elie Saab): She literally looks like a fashion  princess. First and foremost, I love when people wear navy. I don't know why, but I do. The navy plus the stunning red lip? Don't even get me started. The metallic strapped heels acted as a neutral in this look, which I love. Fabulous.
• Angelina Jolie at the In the Land of Blood and Honey premiere (Romona Keveza): I'm obsessed.  Navy and nude is such a stellar color combination, so that's amazing. That dress?  Phenomenal. The silhouette and the asymmetry? No words. However, I do wish she had a bolder eye or a really enviable, silver bracelet. Regardless, the navy and nude is incredible.
• Olivia Palermo at the Valentino Virtual Museum Party (Marchesa): Well, this is beautiful. The sequined detailing on that Marchesa is gorgeous and I love how the dress is paired with those funky heels. I love Olivia Palermo's style because she does that quirky stuff; however, she always  looks undeniably chic. The feminine hair, makeup, and clutch are the perfect thing to balance such a show-stopping ensemble.
• Lea Michele at The Tonight Show (Pucci): Fine, I'll admit it: Lea looks great here. The cohesiveness of the wavy hair and printed dress is right on. I also love how she's wearing hoops or dangling earrings. Though I think a pump would have been more winter-appropriate, the nude shoe does elongate her legs, which is always good.

The Style Files: I'll be Waiting for You Baby, 'Cause I'm Through

The weirdest thing is listening to a song's cover before the  original song. I don't know why I find it so weird, but I do. This recently happened with The Strokes' "You Only Live Once" : I loved a certain cover of it for a couple months, and then I finally listened to the original. It's weird that it took me so long since I love The Strokes, but  I'm please to say that the original did not disappoint. In my humble opinion, this song is addicting. But then again, it's not like you read this blog to hear about my musical preferences. This section is just for my personal enjoyment.

STYLE-SPIRATION: Ali MacGraw
When it comes to style inspirations, I always love playing "blast-from-the-past."  In my mind, these fashionistas are the ones who really paved the way for chic and progressive fashion. I love Ali MacGraw because I feel like I can relate to her style a lot. Every outfit, she's so glam but it almost feels like it's no big deal: it's just natural to her.

This look screams  60's and I like it. The silhouette and the bell-sleeve are perfection. The seemingly white boots are so edgy. Plus, I love a good long-sleeved mini. (Photo Cred)

THE WEEKLY

• Sarah Jessica Parker at the annual UNICEF Snowflake Ball (Louis Vuitton): Talk about a wintry wonderland: I'm obsessed with this look. Although these separates may make other people look boxy, I think the proportions are righteous on her. Sure, the silhouette isn't the most exciting; however, the detail of her ensemble is phenomenal. The monochromatic look is also perfect for all of that detail. Have you guys realized that I really like detail? The messiness of her hair complements the feathered skirt. Gorgeous.
• Kate Hudson at the Brit Fashion Awards (Stella McCartney): This look is so sultry, it's awesome. The cut-out is the perfect thing to complement the long,straight silhouette. Though I love my jewels, keeping this look clean and simple allows us to focus on the dress' detailing. Also, the high bun plus the winged liner equals supreme.
• Olivia Palermo at the Brit Fashion Awards (Matthew Williamson): Love. First of all, I'm obsessed with Olivia Palermo's style. Second, I love Matthew Williamson. Put them together and you get a fabulous look. I love this dress and keeping the color palette simple is such a smart choice: there's so much going on that color would've ruined this look. I also love how she mixed high- Matthew Williamson- with low, Topshop. STYLE DO!  The cutout of the shoes complements the feathers on the Williamson dress, making it an awesome look. Keeping the hair slicked back is smart too: if it was down, there would've been too much going on. Smart and fabulous look!

Tibi RTW Fall 2011

So yesterday I went to fashion week and it was awesome! 

Last night, Tibi ruled the runway. Sleek looks of red, white, gold, grey, and navy strutted its way down the catwalk. There was a lively vibe; high energy music played  and the lights were fully turned on as the supermodels did their thing!

According to the program's description, this collection was heavily inspired by "the sleek and modern simplicity of the 90s". What I loved about this collection was how it wasn't scary grunge inspired; however,  it was more like Clueless 90's (with more class)...and who doesn't love Clueless?

ANYWAYS, BACK TO TIBI!

The show was stocked with amazing separates and party dresses. What I loved most was how there was something in this collection for everyone: the preppy, the trendy, the indie. the androgynous- EVERYONE!   The fun shapes and silhouettes was mixed perfectly with the lace, appliques, and Rococo style prints.

My favorites you may ask? Well, since my pictures won't show off how awesome these looks are, style.com here we come (but more of my pictures later).

I LOVED....

• The shearling biker jacket mixed with a beautiful chiffon floral dress. The juxtaposition of tough versus girly was so sick.  Mixing fabrics is so awesome.
• Mid-calf grey sweater dress. The simplicity of  this was to die for. A perfect staple and the cable-knit design gave it some pizazz. How incredible would this look with a little jacket and booties? Really incredible is the answer!
• Spider Lace pant and blouse duo. At this moment the collection got interesting and I eventually fell in love. I was happy to read  in the program that this was not a playsuit, or else the print would have been TOO striking for the streets. Anyways, I loved this! The lace was super fun and on their own, these two pieces can really pull an outfit together and make it look unique. And we all secretly want to be unique.
• Spider Lace shirt dress: Once again, obsessed. I think the fitted silhouette with such a fun design is different; we are usually bored with flowing dresses and overbearingly bright prints. But because this is fall, we are given something classy and wearable. I'm already thinking of amazing accessories to finish this look off with!
• Teal Crepe dress: I am so smitten with this color- GORGEOUS! As we are all aware, longer skirts are making a comeback. What I loved about this one was the mixing of fabrics. The silk and chiffon combo made a long dress exciting, which is difficult to find because the world is obsessed with minimalism.
• Gold and navy Jacquard dress: In my mind,  a  gold and navy duo  is such an unappreciated color combination but, when used, is absolutely fabulous. Color blocking was  taken to a new level here; the different fabrics made it more subtle but I think it looks fabulous and elegant. The knee hem is also classy.
• Gold and navy blouse and trousers: Besides it being the best color combination- oh yeah I went there- I love the blouse and trousers can look absolutely fabulous on their own as well as together! When I look at this combination, only one word comes to mind: regal. It's probably the pants and the blouse's collar, but it seriously reminds me of a fabulous English kingdom. Obviously, this look can be toned down with simple staples which I think is good for those who aren't as willing to make a statement,
• Jacquard box pleated dress: This is the part of the show when I fantasized about a nonexistent cocktail party I was hosting. This dress is so much fun and so youthful which, being a teenage girl, I love. I liked the hint of navy, which was smart or else this dress would've been TOO gold. Obsessed.
• Full-skirted V dress: In my cocktail fantasy, I am flat chested and wearing this dress! So gorgeous! I love how this is more or less the grown up version of my prior favorite. The show was filled with a lot of cutesy dresses, which I love, so it was awesome to see something a bit more mature, which ultimately gave the collection a bit more of an age range.
• One shouldered swan feathered dress: Obsessed with this red dress! I really love the whole idea of one shouldered dresses, so this is perfection. I usually think a red and black combination is a bit too harsh but I think the little black in the print made it not harsh, but ridiculously fabulous. The bodice almost looks like some kind of ruching or draping, either way I think it looks great with the full skirt.  For the record, this model handled the shoe malfunction like a champ!

• Rococo race back and pleated skirt dress: I was really close to running onto the runway and stealing this; someone would HAVE to wear this to my fake cocktail party. I love how the prints on the bodice and skirt aren't identical, but work together so. It was the perfect amount of print and umm remember when I said we should all get used to white? Yeah...
• High neck pouf dress: Another great look featured at my "cocktail party". The white/grey color mixed with the chiffon appliques was the perfect blend of understated and ah-maz-ing. This dress is 100% fun and I think anyone who wears it will feel and look incredible.  I'm glad this isn't just a typical "sweetheart" neckline; the high neckline takes away a little bit of the cutesy quality (not too much because it's adorable) and makes it edgier.

  final verdict on this collection= fabulous. absolutely fabulous.

The Weekly: So Fierce It's So Nuts

Yesterday, something really cool happened to me: I helped out at my VERY first fashion show. Yes thats right, I was a dresser for my university's Fashion Club semi-annual show. It was pretty incredible. At first, i was a little bit nervous about not knowing what exactly to do as a dresser. And the time restriction seemed stressful. BUT IT WAS A BLAST. I loved working with the designers, models, and people who actually have a passion for fashion.

No pictures of the actual show but it looked FABulous.

I have a LOT of weekly looks so I'll just cut to the chase; onto the Weekly!

• Shakira at the 2010 Bambi Awards: I'm so in love with this look; she looks like a golden goddess! I'm obsessed!!  One shoulder dresses are so in right now and the silhouette hugged her body in the RIGHT way. The golden tone and the texture of the dress was so gorgeous and I loved her beachy waves, it was so refreshing and so Shakira. I also enjoyed how she matched the metallics with a matte clutch. Purely incredible.
• Olivia Palermo at the Glamour Awards: So I'm oddly obsessed with Olivia Palermo's style and this look is no different! The textures and fabric mixture is so awesome, chic, and trendy, I'm in love. I've seen a lot of the shear skirt looks and I think that Palermo does it the best.  The V-Neck is so tasteful  but definitely sexy. The sleek updo makes her look like a class act. And the accessories?! I LOVE GOLD. And that slim leopard belt, so unexpected but so awesome! And her style...but that's a given, right? 
• Victoria Beckham at a Fashion Conference: This may sound cliche, but Victoria Beckham ceases to amaze me: she always looks so incredibly POSH. Especially in this three-quartered dress. First of all, I love sleeved dresses. Second of all, yellow is so awesome: so happy, mod, and fashion forward. And the sleek ponytail makes the whole look come together. And, when mixed with Chanel, what could be better?
• Ginnifer Goodwin at MOCA Gala (Chanel): I see that BU alums have incredible style, true story. I love this Chanel, who doesn't love Chanel?! I'm obsessed with pearls and lace, I'm your traditional girly girl, so this dress looks absolutely DIVINE. The bodice is so intricate, which makes the rather plain lace skirt a perfect foil. And I also love how she had neutral make up on, it was so effortless and chic. This whole look, in fact, is just that.
• Rachel McAdams at the Morning Glory New York Premiere (Lanvin):  Rachel McAdams is so gorgeous, and this premiere is no exception! I love when she wears soft colors; this Lanvin was PERFECT. Usually, I'm not a big fan of ruched dresses, but this one complimented her hourglass figure instead of hindering it. While I would choose a different pair of shoes, I still think she looks absolutely wonderful.
• Kate Hudson at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards (Lanvin): I've said it before and I'll say it again, I would be Kate Hudson if I could be any modern Hollywood starlet. I love her free-spirit, her movies, and her style. This one shoulder- once again, another big trend- looks absolutely positively chic on her.  The side ruche, however, gives this dress a lot of spice. And I love the beige shimmer on her! She really looks like old time Hollywood glam. And the waves, mixed with the red lip, looks so retro and really incredible. I LOVE HER!
